Thanks for all the information - makes very interesting reading and Im very glad that I dont eat my exercise calories back! :p ;)

My workout consisted of 15 mins arc trainer, 40 mins weights - squats, bench press, barbell row (5 x 5) then some additional chest exercise before heading to stairmaster for 20 mins on level 9 intensity when my effort went to 99%!! Total work out time of about 1hr 45 mins.

Mine is 57 which, I was delighted to read when doing some research, classes me as an 'Athlete'!!!! x FWIW I'm 46 in May, 5ft 9" and 168lbs

You say 'jogging 3 times a week' - how much effort do you put into your jogging? Are you sweating and breathless at the end of it? How far do you jog and for how long? It may be that your are only burning around 100 cals per time but eating more to compensate! (Speaking from experience here!) x

Apparently I look like ive lost at least a stone when I have lost nothing at all. However I started out at a UK 16 and am now a UK 12-14 so something must have shifted! I'm definitely stronger and more muscular/toned. At 5ft 9" I know I can carry the weight and as I've got older any excess settles around my middle which is…

Loving these replies! If sweat is indeed your fat crying then I would be as skinny as Cara Delvigne! (Im not!) I sweat loads especially on stairmaster (20 mins and its running off me) elliptical (dripping like a loose tap!) and legs workouts (Drips on the floor as I do squats and lunges!). I like it cos I feel like my skin…

Ok everyone, thank you so much for all your tips and feedback. Guess I need to be patient and start measuring me and weighing food more often! x Thanks again x

I use MapMyRun (or mapometer) .co.uk for a couple of years, mainly to get the distance rather than calorie burn as I find them a little on the high side. However I suppose they are as accurate as any other method of calculation! I work on 80-100 cals per mile for running and 60-70 cals per mile for walking, both depending…

MrM27 - I understand that but my question is, given my level of exercise, lack of activity during the day, age, height etc, what should the ideal daily calorie allowance be? I've tried 1300, I've tried 1600 I've tried 2000 - admittedly the two former were netting those amounts after allowing 300 for exercise - maybe I…

Metazoick - The 500 cals a pop entries are evening meals as explained above. The smaller numbers are my guesstimate if I've been nibbling -a carrot here, a fingerful of raw cake mix there. I know my diet can be improved and im working on that (day 10 now of no (or way way less than before) sugar, chocolate or biscuits!) ,.…

Hi, many of my recipes I have actually weighed and measured out so am confident in the calorie content - the home made lasagne calorie count was a shocker!! My evening meals I estimate at around 450-500 calories (those are the quick added ones) and this is where I have a jacket potato (200g) with the scrapings of the…

I will always choose boxercise just for the stress outlet it gives me!! xx

Had to chuckle at these posts as I too am suffering(in a good way) today as I started a new routine yesterday which was supersets for legs then supersets for shoulders/chest/triceps today. Unfortunately today I had to drive 270 miles and my backside is rather sore! And getting out of the car for a coffee break…

I breastfed all my 3 children and do not feel that I lost weight any more quickly as a result. With my first I lost weight as I took him for a 3 mile walk every day just to get him off to sleep and the weight dropped off. Took longer with the second and although I lost it after my 3rd was a year old, its crept back on ;-)…

Was told by my sons physio that it gives more of a psychological benefit rather than a medical one. However I believe that any benefit is better than nothing so if it helps you then go for it!

I'm 45 and can still do a better cartwheel than most of the girls on my junior rugby team - yes, we do have competitions before we get down to the serious stuff!!! Cant do a handstand anymore - there seems to be a lot more of me to invert these days!!!! Still going to keep trying tho. x

I have been working out 6 days a week for the last couple of years and not lost an ounce in weight. However I have gone from a UK 14-16 to a comfortable 12-14 in the same stores, plus my shape has changed and now looks much less pear shaped and much more streamlined. My legs, arms and shoulders look much more toned and if…

I would have a nutritionist as I know that my eating habits are sabotaging my training success. Once I have them sussed, I would then move to a PT if I still had some cash left over! For me, I know what I SHOULD be eating but I need some guidance on when, where, what and how much.

I run outside (x country) and tend to work on around 90 cals per mile running at 11minute mile max. If I run on the road at a 9.5minute mile I work on 100 cals per mile. It can only ever be a best estimate after all!

I had my third and final c-section 14 years ago and still have my pouch! For me, the only way to get rid of it will be by having a tummy tuck but I'm 45 now and not sure it's worth it. Sometimes it gets me down if I try to wear sexy underwear rather than my 'combines' (all is safely gathered in!) but my husband doesn't…

Nope seconded!!! I don't bother recording any calorie burn through weight training - just record the cardio stuff. x

How does the smith machine help with form? [/quote] I have no idea! But I was told this my one of the trainers in my gym when I was struggling! Have never got the hang of the Smith myself but thought I was throwing in some helpful advice from another source. Sorry if I got it wrong - I still consider myself very much a…

Stick at it - your tendons and ligaments will remember how to stretch eventually. And keep the weight light until they do. I went back to basics with my squatting a few weeks ago and can now do a full squat, albeit it with only half the weight I was using before. This is using an Olympic bar in a squat rack btw. Smith…

I've been doing this for a year and still not lost any weight however I'm down at least one dress size and more firm and muscled than I have been for about 20 years! Forget the scales - I can gain 5lbs overnight literally from weighing myself just before I lie down and then as soon as I get out of bed! (no, it wasn't a…

I've been married 20 years. We are going through a sticky patch (very) right now but 20 years ago, my then boyfriend would have thought nothing of supporting me at a race, just like I would have supported him. Obviously every relationship is different but if it were me (thats the me now btw!) I would go on my own - you…

I started using more weights than cardio at the start of the year and now my arms feel rock solid, as do my legs. My shoulders look fab in sleeveless tops and my back is very strong. Unfortunately due to my lack of control over eating, I still have a fair amount of flesh over these muscles - as my physio said recently…

It is so comforting to know how many other are in the same boat. I am now on day 3 of my 'no rubbish' mindset and apart from mindlessly scoffing 2 days worth of mixed nuts (decided on a 'healthy' snack at work) I'm doing OK. I resisted temptation in the supermarket last night by asking myself "Are you sure you want to make…

Well folks, I did it. Yesterday stayed within my calorie goals, no chocolate, sweets or rubbish and didnt comfort eat when I got home! New day today - lets see if I can do it again

Thank you to everyone who has replied. I know that it is MY problem/issue and I'm the only one who can sort it out. I also know that life isn't as peachy as it could be at the moment and I'm sure this is a contributing factor however much I deny it. But the biggest problem, like so many of you have mentioned is that I see…

Acria this makes sense! Thank you! Hope you are stronger as a result of knowing this. x
