There was a great article in Slate that discussed the history of the BMI from its origination as a tool for statistical population analysis back in the 19th century and how it has been co-opted by the government and insurance and health industries as an individual health analysis tool.…

If you're doing squats to really work the ol' gluteus maximus, you need to be going past the parallel squat and into the deep squat range. If I remember correctly, at the 130 degree point the glutes are 25% more enganged in the movement.

Excuse me, are those pants cotton or could they be felt?
-
You, sir, are a genius.

I believe that you are already incorporating deep squats properly into leg training. Parallel squats to focus on the quads and some deep squats to really incorporate the gluteus maximus.

Good article. I specifically like this statement: "Even more to the point, as Kirby acknowledges, "clean" eating assigns moral value where none exists (since, contrary to popular belief, dieting does not actually make you a better person)."

Three things: 1. Many photos are either staged or altered to make the subject look better. Its quite possible that the person(s) you are idolizing don't actually look aything like the photos in real life. 2. You are still trying to get to your goal weight, correct? The most dramatic changes (results) usually occur at the…

"If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human, f***ing beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian s**t.…

If he actually is supportive, he probably was trying to do just that and wanting to reassure you in case you didn't make your goal. Of course he violated the first rule of married man life.

Absolutely! LOL On a serious note, anyone believing that a USDA organic labeled food is pesticide free, is grossly mistaken. There are a number of organic pesticides that contain compounds listed as toxic by the EPA as well as synthetic pesticides that are allowed to be used under the 'organic' food label.

I second compression shorts, tights, ect. as the best defense. You can use cornstarch or apply some stick deoderrant to the chafing areas for a quick household remedy.

I think if you reflect on your post a little more it will continue to become clear. There is a solid chance that going from no workouts to a significant amount of excercise you're eating more than you think you are as your body is telling you its HUNGRY! Also, healthy sounding meals at restaraunts frequently have a lot…

Male, 39, 6'1" 285lbs Last completed set this rotation was Bench 290 x3 Deadlift 485 x 3 Squat 425 x 3 (my battered knees filed a formal complaint with my brain the next day) My goal is to drop 20lbs and then push each lift up 15% or more by the end of the year. Hell, I don't even care about the weight. I just want to see…

Congrats on the weight loss. You've done a tremendous job. Given the amount of weight you lost, it may take some time for the skin to rebound. Do you do any weight training? It may be key to getting the look you want in the end. Once again, be proud of yourself. You've already achieved a tremendous goal

I had a similar situation with my mother-in-law when we were visiting the in-laws a lot. There's a good chance that to them there is a rationalization that food is love. They want to make you 'good' food because they love you. To her, rejecting it is an emotional slap in the face. i had to have a sincere talk with my MIL…

That was a good one.

Are you looking for actual training gloves or just cheap bag gloves? If its something you're going to pursue for any length, I would definitely recommend a decent pair of training/sparring gloves. A poor quality/fit really ups the risk of injury. Vinyl with a velcro closure would be fine. A women's S/M fits a 7" around the…

WTF... I don't think I would have shared all that, but kudos to you for really putting it all out there for what is turning into an epic thread.

If you like Diablo, but tired of D3 I think you'll find the expansion and new loot system have remade it into a great game again. I still haven't finished the expansion just because my gaming time has had to be seriously curtailed. I tested out the Crusader and it looks interesting.

Wait times for equipment is directly proportional to the amount of weight left on the claimed piece of equipment. 95lbs load at a bench, no claim is acceptable. 405 lbs load on the bar, best to say "sorry, I'll just catch it whenever you're finished" and let the dude press. If its a woman claiming the 405 load on a bench,…

As for actual weight training, start with machines to get comfortable with just working out, with the eventual goal of getting into free weight training and more compound lifts. As people have previously mentioned, there are numerous web sites dedicated to strength programs for beginners. Bodybuilding.com has an list of…

Pretty much everything the OP stated. The idea of comparing yourself to edited/airbrushed images in media as a way to define healthy or what you should look like. Also, people who don't rack the @#$% weights or put them back haphazardly.

Every other day. I would lose my mind if I had been tight on my diet and putting in the work at the gym and I spike 3 or 4 pounds from my last weigh in. I know that its just a normal fluctuation, but the scale just lays their with its evil, vile smirk flashing that number at me, mocking me... beckoning me to smash its…

Let me add a little perspective on severe calorie restriction diets and its effects: "This observation was made by researchers at Rockefeller University. Researchers looked at the effect of different daily caloric deficits on weight loss. As might be expected, the fewer calories the subjects consumed, the more weight they…

Hello all, I got a late start in this realm and only have 4 years of Muay Thai and trained some in BJJ. I've also dabbled with Systema. I had some knee injuries and let myself go to pot. I'm trying to work myself back into reasonalbe shape so that this 39 year old can hang a few rounds on the younger fighters again.
