Thanks for mentioning this as I'm guilty of ignoring pains while running.

This is exactly what I did when I started training for my full. I think I started in week 6 or 7 of the HH novice 2 plan. I'm not a seasoned marathoner yet (have my first on 5/1), but wanted to offer my two cents on selection of training plans. With the running experience you've described, you may want to consider doing…

Thanks for the advice and encouragement!!! I will stick to my plan to do 15 this weekend and thank you for sharing your planned long run mileage - very helpful!!! Good luck to you with your marathon!!!!
-
Perfect - this is what I suspected but wanted confirmation from others before finalizing my plans for my run this weekend!

Thanks for the suggestion re mileage for this week's long run - very helpful!

Also, shin splints....trying to balance injury with training. [/quote]

This is what worries me - my 20 miler was a month before my taper. I did get an 18 miler in a week before my taper but I'm not sure that this will provide enough conditioning and preparation for the marathon. Should I squeeze an 18 or 20 miler in this weekend? _Enginerd;36142470"]Some plans have you doing a two week taper…

Hi, I wasn't very clear in my original post about my long runs (terminology issue:) I understand that I need to continue to run one long run a week even during taper - I just don't call them long runs because they will be shorter distances than the long runs I ran during the last leg of my training. I am new to the…

15 miles

Thank you all for the reassurance and advice - it really helps!!!! I think the anxiety stems from the fact that I have no previous experience to draw from and deep down I wonder if I can really do it (even though I've completed the training). I've also been on the fence about joining a pace group. My worries about not…

You'll be just fine starting back up on the next week. I'm following the same plan and have altered it many times due to work, sick kiddies, life, etc. However, I gave myself some lee time so I wasn't worried about not being able to finish the plan. I agree with the other poster that you will benefit from running more than…

I prefer running in running shorts, however, I have had good luck with Nike and Victoria's Secret compression tights (no sliding). Admittedly, they are pricey but the quality is so good that you'll likely get a few years use out of them.

Compression sleeves!

Ditch the strength and speed work and just focus on getting easy miles in. I have my first marathon in four weeks and stopped lifting two months ago - made a huge difference in speed and endurance.
-
Will try this - thanks!
-
Thanks for the explanation and the link to the article - both were very helpful!
-
Thanks for the info - I will definitely try eating more the day prior, and, as others have suggested, slow my pace down
-
Sorry - I was referring to marathon race pace in my post. Since it will be my first marathon, I'm still trying to figure out what that pace should be.
-
STrooper sorry... I don't know what's going on with my replies! What I've been trying to ask is for you to please explain how I've trained my body to burn through glycogen quickly. Is it from running at faster pace? How would I know this - are there any physical symptoms?
-
Part of my first response disappeared

Thanks! I don't know why I run them quickly - I guess I thought I needed to do that so that my body would adapt to the quicker pace. I will slow down for sure! I take in 1 package of chomps every 5 miles. Will try a light meal before my long run.
-
Thanks for the info. I thought the rule of thumb for long runs was to run 30-60 seconds slower than race pace so I have tried to stay at the 30 second threshold. Based on your advice, it appears I may benefit from running my long runs even slower. BTW, not all of my shorter runs are at race pace
-
Congrats - that is great progress!!!
-
Thanks for all of the advice - I appreciate the time each of you took to respond. I've learned so much from this group - you guys rock!!!
-
Thank you all for your input - I appreciate it very much!!! I now have more confidence in my training plan!
-
I forgot to mention that I'm looking for 16 week training plans.

I have not read through all of the responses so this may be a repeat of information. When I went into maintenance, I slowly stopped counting calories (gasp, yes - you read that right) and pretty much ate what and however much I wanted. However, I do tend to eat light (fewer calories) during the week and heavier on the…

Thank you!!! I wondered if weak glutes might be the culprit. I'll definitely incorporate those exercised into my strength training!

I have progressed quicker with my squat than my deadlift; although, I can DL more than I can squat (hope that makes sense). Thanks for the suggestion about not working legs the week prior to the half....I hadn't thought of that but will definitely take that week off from lifting. I'm going to check out the link - I used my…

Thanks so much for the advice - much appreciated! I'm going to shorten my lifting sessions to 2x per week so I can up the mileage on my "short" runs and build a greater mileage base.
