Cardio first if you are planning on doing anything intense, like intervals, or if you're goal is to improve endurance training over building your physique. If the cardio is going to consist of low to moderate intensity steady state training, then it's more of a personal preference type of thing. For me, I prefer to do…

I'm at: 40% protein 30% carb 30% fat You should try and experiment with what you think is best...but give each breakdown at least a few weeks. The first week, you might be in a mental fog all the time as your body adjusts to the lower carb intake. I actually prefer to think of it in terms of increasing protein instead of…

For me it's acceptable in the same way other processed things like vitamins, fish oil tablets, spices used for my cuts of meat, etc. are all acceptable. The notion of 'eating clean', like so many other things, becomes muddled and contradictory when you take it to the extreme.

Tom Venuto's program is one of the best in the industry. It is especially good for someone who wants a detailed plan and is willing to invest some time into creating an eating plan that is best suited toward them as opposed to a 'one-size-fits-all' type of plan.

I would worry about the timing of your carbs only after you've found and are consistently adhering to your personal optimal daily level of carb intake. This is something that takes a significant amount of discipline and careful planning. Carb timing also takes a significant back-seat to getting adequate protein. But to…

Definitely not starvation mode, but whenever you are in a sustained caloric deficit, your metabolism will naturally slow down. As Lyadeia mentioned, cycling your calories is an effective way to induce a rebound in your metabolism. Tom V calls these days 'refeed' days. Lyle McDonald calls them planned diet breaks. They're…

What kind of chicken breasts are you using? They should be predominantly protein. The ones I use from TJ's have 26 grams of protein and 0 carbs. Also look into things like greek yogurt, eye of round steak, pork chops, fish steaks, etc. BTW, keep us updated on your 40/40 plan. A lot of people find that kind of breakdown…

The average american diet...or the vast majority of food choices out there are way too carb-heavy. So it's difficult to limit your carbs to a healthy level without preparing your own food. Anytime I do not brown bag my lunch, I'm relegated to pretty much screwing up my daily macros if I don't just buy a light salad and…

These two studies demonstrate that there is no metabolic advantage in low-carb diets. Sorry if these have been posted before.. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20565999 http://weightology.net/weightologyweekly/?page_id=285 Here is a study which shows the tendency for obese subjects on low-fat diets to underestimate…

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that freerange and mynameisuntz didn't accomplish much at work today..

Thanks for sharing that Hodar!

If you've been exercising and maintaining a caloric deficit and want to get rid of some stubborn body fat, you'll have to increase your protein levels. Get an accurate breakdown of your daily macros by starting a food journal. Based on what you have listed so far, I believe you will need a quantum leap in protein.

I flipped through a handful of them... are they all packaged foods and juices? While I'm sure the ingredients used and the final nutritional content figures are all good, wouldn't whole foods like fresh fruit, veggie sticks, hard-boiled egg, etc...etc be more filling on a per calorie basis and better for you in general?…

Go to the MY HOME tab, then Goals, then Change Goals...

Mynameisuntz, how dare you further your arguments with facts! On a related note, the ROK (Republic of Korea) was recently ranked as the thinnest nation in the world (Japan #2).....and yes, they eat a lot of rice! If they get sick of rice, then they eat udon noodles. Sick of that? Then they eat Ramen noodles. Haha,…

Do they still offer the bread mobile??

I believe mynameisuntz has mentioned the TEF on a few occasions! lol

Just trying to make the point that consuming protein in excess of 30-35% or roughly 1g/lb of lean body mass isn't exactly 'bro-science'. There is nothing inherently wrong with consuming more than the aforementioned levels of protein, because as I stated before, the optimal level of protein is context dependent and not some…

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19927027 UNTZ, you beat me to it! There are other research studies that have shown improved sparing of lean mass with protein consumptions as high as 1.5 grams per lb of bodyweight when on a low calorie diet, but don't have them at the tip of my hand..
-
I would say that optimal protein levels are context dependent...i.e, body-fat percentage, calorie level (deficit or surplus?), and weight training activity levels. The first two variables would be inversely related and the third would be positively related to optimal protein requirements.

LOL, I seriously commend you for making it this far. At the end of the day, we are all just obsessing over things that don't matter much. The paralysis by analysis trap! It's best to just go out and see what works best for you... some people do better with low carb diets, some do better with moderate carb diets...and a…

You completely mis-read his point. That's not what he was saying at all. The resulting glucose is the same... the accompanying micronutrients are what make the difference.

That's another characteristic of some low carb talibans. There is no inbetween. You either believe that Starchy Carbs are Evil or you're an infidel.

munameisuntz, That is the type of voo-doo science you have to deal with when dealing with dogmatic hard-liners who refuse to believe anything outside of what they know to be the truth. Eat a half cup of brown rice after a workout? Might as well be eating twinkies!!! (This is the mindset of the person you are debating right…

+1 And there have been studies which show that people on low fat diets (ie., eat plenty of carbs) substantially underreport the amount of calories they consume... Something that Gary Taubes conveniently ignores in his selective research for his book. However, I do semi-agree with the title of this thread.... A HIGH CARB…

Does WW track your macros? I think that is always an important component in a healthy weight loss program. Protein is crucial...

Haha, nice post! I enjoyed it! For me personally, I sometimes throw out the yolk to help meet my daily macros. As an example, I generally eat 2 whole eggs and 4 egg whites when I decide to eat eggs. That would equate to 28 grams of protein. However, if I were to eat the caloric equivalent in whole eggs, I would only be…

Salad dressings, 96/4 ground beef patties, brocolli slaw, canned sardines, frozen chicken thighs/breasts... I love almost everything there!

There is definitely somewhat of a double-standard when it comes to what is acceptable/not embarrassing when donning swim-wear. But it would be a shame for anyone to not be able to fully enjoy him/herself at a pool or beach out of self-consciousness...... Just keep telling yourself people will hardly notice you and…

I'm addicted to coffee too. Once I started tracking calories, Instead of giving up coffee, I just switched to black.... Now I probably drink 6-8 cups a day. One of my favorite staple foods are those 96% fat free beef patties sold in Trader Joe's. Two of those patties pan fried with Pam, a little salt/pepper and TJ's 21…
