  • Your VO2 max plays a big factor in how many calories your burn while exercising. Michael Phelps, of course, moves oxygen at a world-class pace and so the time he spends swimming burns a voracious amount of calories. With that said, I heard the 12K calorie/day thing was proven a myth? In any event, doesn't matter...he still…
  • I enjoy my food by putting it into my mouth as quickly as possible. But your suggestions are still great for portion control... and I think MOST other people enjoy food by eating slowly and savoring each bite....just not me.
  • Yes, pasta (with red sauce...not white sauce) is the ultimate leptin normalizer! That and sherbert ice-cream!
  • Monster Milk 50 grams protein 350 calories Lots of other goodies....
  • Millions and millions of years of evolution baby... don't fight it. It's the natural order of things....
  • I've read his research. I've also seen the way that he ignores the overwhelming amount of research that disputes the entire premise of his argument. The premise of Taube's argument (calories don't matter, insulin response does) is based on his assumption that obese people consume a similar amount of calories as normal…
  • Another thing that I would add is that, although having a six pack is great, if you're a guy, please be sure you already have a decent amount of beef on your frame before you try to shred down to 10% in the quest for abz. This would be especially true for 'skinny-fat' dudes. I've seen too many people just spin their wheels…
  • But P28 is whole wheat..... As I understand it, whole wheat and whole grain are the same thing. It's multi-grain labeled bread that is the pretender...
  • As with most things, the effects that sugar from fruit will have on your body is context dependent. Given sufficient protein and assuming you aren't going over on your daily calorie alotment, then consuming fruit will lead to many good things.
  • taem, have you ever seen Dr. Joel Fuhrman's 3-steps to incredible health? I thought it was interesting. It's not going to stop me from eating a lot of fresh cut meat, but interesting nonetheless. I have respect for McDougal, Atkins and Fuhrman. Taubes is a quack though.... Actually, I take that back. Isn't that term…
  • I blame myself. And I also take credit for achieving my current physique... Modern society has provided us with many conveniences that promote weight gain. But unless there is a specific medical condition involved, anyone who blames anyone but themselves just isn't getting it.....
  • LOL, the usual suspects at it again. It's quite sad....really.
  • Last year, I left my wife of 11 years to be with another woman. It was simultaneously the best thing and the worst thing I have ever done in my life...
  • You know the story about the guy who went to see the doctor and said, "Hey Doc, it hurts when I do this" to which the doctor responded, "Well, then don't do that"?
  • I vote for frozen berries! I love coffee too much... I must have my steaming hot morning brew separately.
  • Lately, it's been helping me meet my calorie requirements. Now that I am on a bulk, I would probably have difficulty meeting my daily calorie needs without a protein shake. And people who think protein in the form of whey powder is more expensive than other forms of protein really need to re-evaluate their math.
  • I find that similar to cardio, resistance training wasn't all that fun when I first did it. But now I'm hooked for life. I think if you give it a chance, you might like it.
  • Ask the bacon expert. This stuff makes everything taste good.... I always crack a smile when I think about his "Hot Pockets" routine...
  • You must not have read the article then. The article basically states that gorillas get 15-30%% of their energy from protein...and it ALL comes from protein rich leaves. To compare this type of diet to atkins is ridiculous.
  • Perhaps the moron who wrote the article just saw the movie Greystoke, The Legend of Tarzan.... "Damn, that boy is pretty jack3d! Well no wonder... he was raised by meat-eating Gorillas", hehe
  • I'm not sure how old you are, but if you are only 110-115 lbs and lead a relatively active lifestyle but your cholesterol while unmedicated was high enough to warrant use of lipitor, it's possible that you are simply a hyper-responder to dietary cholesterol. If so, then I wouldn't be so quick to adopt a low-carb eating…
  • Actually, Sat fats DO raise your LDL. It's just that they raise your HDL a higher amount. In fact, the study you just posted states as such. The study you posted also states that unsaturated fats actually lower LDL. But another trend that has been developing lately in the medical field is that LDL is beginning to diminish…
  • This is going to turn into another low carb vs. high carb debate. Perhaps all the sensible, MODERATE carb folks are all outside, enjoying their active lives. With that said, it's time for me to go do some afternoon rollerblading at the beach... Hope you guys have fun fighting with each other over a completely meaningless…
  • When you're losing weight, health markers will almost invariably improve...regardless of what your diet consists of. My Mother's lipid panel has improved steadily for the past 6 months, yet she refuses to abandon her high carb eating plan. She has been losing weight steadily which has coincided with her reduced cholesterol…
  • The cholesterol reading that most health practitioners agree is most important are the very dense particles of cholesterol referred to as VLDL. The biggest driver of your VLDL level is overconsumption of carbs, especially simple carbs.
  • Yeah, better to put it into the hands of documentary film-makers or fringe internet groups who make their money from being contradictory and extreme as possible. I shudder to think what you would do if you were to ever see "Bigger, Faster, Stronger".
  • I'm a big fan of Cytosport's Muscle Milk lineup of shakes. You'll save some money if you go with Monster Milk and just drink one scoop instead of two scoops of MM Light. But if you want to use it as a meal replacement, then the muscle milk line might be better due to the carbs and added micronutrients. They all taste great…
  • The best meal plan is one that is individually tailored to your individual body. With that said, let's not get overly influenced by some of these fringe internet groups that have decided to simply throw away 40 years worth of nutritional research. Arguments like "watch Fathead" or watch this documentary or any other highly…
  • Congratulations on your weight loss so far. The first week of going low carb is always difficult. It takes time for it to pass. On that note, just as an FYI.... that Mayo Clinic Grapefruit diet wasn't put together by the "real" Mayo Clinic. http://www.ezweightlossdietplans.com/2010/01/the-mayo-clinic-diet-is-an-imposter/ I…
