The best workout will be the one that you will be able to do consistently 4-6 times/week. Since you are just starting out and have a substantial amount of weight to lose, it's important that you find something you like, do it consistently and couple that with a sensible diet. With that said, I would try strength training…

Aside from its metabolic benefits (i.e., speeding up fat loss), resistance training helps spare lean body mass for trained individuals and helps CREATE lean body mass for folks just starting out.

When bulking, you suggest doing only high rep sets?

Unless you feel you are very sensitive to carbs, there really is no true metabolic advantage to being in a state of ketosis as long as you are consuming sufficient protein. http://www.ajcn.org/content/83/5/1055.abstract If you feel as if your weight loss has stalled, I would try upping your protein. :glasses:

Are you cutting or bulking? If cutting, then your macros look OK for your rest days. On your workout days, sandwich your training sessions with some starchy carbs. Also, be vigilant for signs of overtraining. 4x/week on a calorie deficit can be tough for some people (like me!)

Most people over-estimate calories burned and underestimate calories consumed (yes, even with the help of an excellent tracking system like MFP), so I wouldn't sweat it if you don't eat back your exercise calories. A few days of sizable deficits isn't going to hurt you. Just avoid the prolonged large calorie deficits. A…

Wow, talk about spreading false rumors... http://www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/GuidanceDocuments/DietarySupplements/ucm257563.htm#app-b It is NOT an attempt to ban all supplements. Rather, just an effort to keep track of all NEW ingredients that have not yet been proven or experienced to be safe.…

Agree 100%. For anyone consuming any of the foods listed in that slide-show on a regular basis, cellulose should be the least of their worries!

They are a help for people who do set their protein levels relatively high. My protein level is set to 35%, and I eat at least one protein shake per day. Protein coming from real food such as eggs, chicken, lean beef, etc. is better though....and the shakes are more of a convenience item.

It's amazing how sympathetic everyone is when the wife isn't supportive.... yet, I've seen many responses along the line of "ditch him!", or "start flirting with other guys" when it's the husband that isn't supportive. Hehe, no biggie! It's the natural order of things.... Plus, guys are often a bit more pig-headed about…

Not magic, but in our carbaholic societty, it may seem like magic. BTW, congratulations on your progression!

"There's a website called MFP that makes it really easy!"

LOL, I'm sure that went over really well with the girls who suddenly went silent when you entered the room. Their green goblin of jealousy is your best revenge.

Honestly, I would take it a step further and slowly elminate all starchy carbs, not just gluten. You mention that rice makes you bloated as well, and rice does not contain gluten. Make the change slowly, lest you go into a mental fog or get a bad case of the carb-flu. This way you can monitor how your body reacts. Starchy…

I never understood that either....and I probably never will. Back when I was a bit chubby, I would be full of admiration for a person who took charge of their weight and took steps to be thin and healthy. I used to get sick and tired of people telling me I need to gain weight. My girlfriend, who hovers between 99-101 lbs,…

Not in the short-term. But a sustained, large caloric deficit combined with a full exercise regimen will eventually lead to some bad things. I think the advice to slightly adjust your caloric intake upward on training days is a pretty good idea if you want to develop eating habits you can permanently ingrain in your daily…

Absolutely not. In fact, tossing in a day of very low calories is actually good for you. Heck, go for the whole Sh'Bang and do an entire day's fast (provided you don't suffer from blood sugar swings or hypoglycemia). Enjoy the catecholamine high during your fast. I certainly do!…

I enjoy tracking my calories, but I enjoy tracking my carb/protein/fat macros even more. I've been doing this for years now and so I'm pretty sure I'll be doing this for the rest of my life. Started off with MFP during its days of infancy, moved on to other tracking sites, but came back after a few years. MFP is the best.…

I think following the advice of erickirb, amyoliver and cmbneely would be a good start. My personal recommendation would be to maintain a reasonable daily caloric deficit but add one or two carb refeed days per week to help normalize her metabolic hormones like leptin, Ghrelin, Insulin, etc. I would also up the protein…

Who here is saying that the food one eats is not important? Is that what the point of contention here is? You are making a blanket statement that fats are bad for you. Well, there is overwhelming MODERN evidence that the issue is way more complicated than that. Health markers improve from several things.... and eating a…

Great! Thanks for quoting a 27 year-old article to make your point! Anything else you want to add? Like smoking is good for you?

Always after a heavy meal and a few cups of water. Hehe, just kidding.. every morning after voiding.

Also, after re-reading that article, I just realized how idiotic the information is. Here is a quote from the article: "In theory, you will gain 1 pound per week by eating 3500". OK, apparently the person who wrote the article does not understand that a pound of muscle is not 3500 calories? Most mass gains will be a…

1. If I were to do the zone diet and set my protein levels as 30%, then my protein intake would exceed 0.8 grams per lbs of BW if I were to set calories at maintenance levels. 2. The exact amount of protein that is OPTIMAL is a subject of great debate.... Posting a 3-year old study doesn't suddenly 'settle' this hotly…

La Jauna, Please don't take this post as being motivated by any carb or anti-carb partisanship, but if you are eating a high protein/high fat/low carb diet and NOT eating any fruits and salads, I would monitor your lipid profile with a lot of vigilance. If you've read the majority of my posts, you will understand that I…

I had it when I was in college. I believe it was caused by stress, dehydration and consuming too much caffeine. This combination caused the initial incident. Subsequent incidents, which were much milder, seemed to happen partially because I was so worried it would happen. I was on beta-blockers for a while to control it.…

I love the canned sardines at Trader Joe's. Loaded with Omega-3's.

Low carb zealots like to make carbs an all or nothing issue, but as with most things, the issue is a bit more complicated and the ideal level is usually somewhere in-between whatever extremes people like to fight over. Restricting carbs gives the impression of helping with weight loss because the average Western diet…
