  • Hi, I'm in my early 30's and have lost 40lbs and have about 40lbs or so left to go, depending how I feel! I have always been very active and I have to say the weight I have lost really makes a difference, I especially notice it when I'm surfing. I'm pretty stoked to get leaner and more fit! It's good to have MFP friends to…
  • Another fruit lover chiming in-I eat tons and tons of fruit, at minimum an apple (I like Braeburns as they're tart and crispy) and an organic banana every day, sometimes two of each of those, mandarins, grapes if they're nice, and other fruits depending on season, etc. I also eat dried apple slices sometimes. I think as…
  • Is there any way you can see a physiotherapist? I also have knee osteoarthritis (from injury) and I am SO thankful for the physiotherapist who guided me into getting back into my activities! With OA I bike (great low impact exercise for when you don't have snow on the ground), run, surf, hike, etc-I do everything I did…
  • I'm 32 and 5'2. In high school I weighed in the 112-125lb range and I was extremely bony aside from my muscled calves and thighs. Every single bony prominence in my body stuck out big time :S So my goal weight is very high compared to most-I think 135 will be a healthy weight for me. The lightest I've been in my adult life…
  • Welcome!!! Did you move to the coast?
  • Hi, I'm from the West Coast (Vancouver Island). :)
  • Eat normally, otherwise you might find it even harder to concentrate on your exams and such. Also, try to get some (extra) exercise! This is a great way to combat stress. Does your college offer counseling? Most offer free counseling to students (Canadian universities and colleges anyway, I don't know about the US but…
  • Sounds like you have some great ways to get started! Nothing wrong with repeating weeks of Couch to 5k-they recommend you go at your own pace and repeat as you have to. When you're ready to progress to the next step it is really rewarding! :)
  • Walking is low impact and easy to do anytime anywhere so it's a good place to start. If you want to start running you can try the Couch to 5k program. Other than that, I would suggest you try lots of different things to see what you enjoy! What were you doing 10 years ago when you felt like you were more shapely?
  • Thanks you guys! It's great to hear from runners that it's possible. My friends all think it sounds reasonable but they mostly don't run. Good idea to put it into my google calendar, that way I'll be more inclined to not "wing it" as you said, as I do like to fly by the seat of my pants haha! :)
  • Great, thanks all! This is sort of what I was thinking. I'm active every day, although a couple of days a week it's just walking my dog and maybe biking to work. I surf most of my days off and usually run twice a week, sometimes three. So consistently running 3 times a week is reasonable for me. I chose to train for the…
  • I love my Moving Comfort bras. I have tried the Enells and the fit does not work for me. I'm a 36H. The Moving Comfort is the best I've found. I do still wear a yoga tank with a light shelf bra over top of it, but occasionally I don't and I'm fine-it actually might just be a mental comfort to wear the tank top lol!
  • Wow, way to go on running in the snow! I was recently visiting family in the east where it is very cold and snowy and I was thinking of the runners that do it all seasons-I'm spoiled here on the coast! Glad the new shoes made a difference for you! There are lots of great articles out there on how to take care of your…
  • I agree with finding something you enjoy and keeping at it. Plus, you may find that as you get in better shape, some of the things you hate you may start to enjoy, who knows! I despise going to the gym so I don't do that. But I surf, kayak, run, hike, and bike mainly. Maybe you can start bike commuting to work and see how…
  • Nice progress on making it to week 7! Must feel great to see how far you've come with it! I have done Couch to 5K and also the Bridge to 10K program. I was running around 8km "comfortably" then got out of the running habit, and now the last year I have been riddled with injuries (not running related) so I'm slowly getting…
  • I'm 5'2 and 195lbs. My starting weight a couple of years ago was I think 224, I got down to 181 and then gained back about 20lbs due to injuries and stress, which I am thankfully back on top of losing again! My goal is around 135 and I may reevaluate up or down at that time. About 6yrs ago I got down to 150lbs and at that…
  • Wow, you look amazing!
  • Wow, not sure what your coworker's issue is, but you look great and you can see a huge difference! Way to go! Celebrate with people who support you and care for you and disregard the ones who undercut your success!
  • Yeah I think it all depends, especially on how much muscle you have. I am 5'2 and right now 186lbs and I fit mostly comfortably in a 12 although there are a couple of pairs or pants that I can almost pull over my hips without undoing. I'm an XL shirt, too broad across the shoulders but fits my chest. I have pretty fat arms…
  • If you want another type of motivation, do some research on diabetes. Google "peripheral neuropathy" images and "diabetic ulcer" images. SCARY! Working with diabetic patients really helps motivate me because it affects EVERY aspect of your health-freaks me out a lot. Also, there is nothing wrong with "only walking" as your…
  • Awesome, good luck! Hope you win, as a new graduate I know that the $200 prize would go an extremely long way in helping out with some healthy groceries! :)
  • I didn't read all the replies but yes, time to move out or start buying your own groceries. When I was in high school I bought a lot of my own groceries because I made different food choices than the rest of my family. At 21, you are an adult and should be capable of supporting yourself so if you are choosing to live at…
  • Rad! No need to wait, get out there! :D I've backpacked fat and thin, and while of course it is more comfortable when you're fit, it is still amazing when you're not. It's so worth it! <3
  • Way to go everyone! :) Mine is that all my scrubs that were too tight when I returned to work after Christmas (I had been off for a few months with an injury), fit me great now! :) So glad I didn't buy new bigger scrubs (after I had given them all away!) since they wouldn't have lasted very long!
  • If you cant' do a HRM but have a smart phone, you could try using runkeeper. You input your weight, and then it uses your phone's gps to track your run/walk/whatever and I think it is more accurate than MFP's estimations (I do not have a HRM to compare to, but I am losing weight and getting smaller so it seems to be…
  • Way to go! :) It definitely makes a difference to not be carrying around extra weight on the trails, and the physical fitness adds to your stability. Yay! :) Just think, if you are a backpacker as well, on your backpacking trips soon you'll be carrying less when you are fully loaded for a multiday trip, than you were just…
  • I'm only 5'2 and usually eat between 1100-1600 a day and I have had no problem losing with that calorie intake. I think lately I have been more around the 1400-1600 calories range. I am usually fairly active. Give it some time and then make adjustments as needed. :)
  • That is wonderful that you can get healthy together! What a supportive and loving wife to let him come to that on his own too...must have been hard as you are obviously worried about his health. Great NSV!
