  • I always double my socks for hiking and occasionally for running especially if I anticipate being wet. Very thin synthetic socks as a line and usually the over sock is thin or medium, merino wool or a merino/synthetic blend. Works great!
  • I work a conbo of 12hr day shifts and 12hr night shifts and just log them both the same, from when I get up to when I go to bed.
  • Wow good for you!! What an awesome goal! I started running again this winter after 2.5 years off and am signing up for multiple races of different lengths so I don't quit again haha. On the list are 2 halfs, plus my first ever trail race! Also nervous and excited.
  • @7lenny7 Thank you!
  • Thanks all!! Lots of great info here, I really appreciate it! I won't be able to check out the route before unfortunately since it's a long expensive ferry ride plus many hours of driving away lol. I'm exploring in my area to find some "real" trails (not groomed gravel) that are not just straight up. Once the snow and ice…
  • All great things to keep in mind, thanks! I'm running on a mix of groomed trails, sand, gravel and a bit of road now. I just invested in good trail runners. I do a lot of hiking and backpacking so I'm no stranger to the trails but have never hit them in this capacity. I definitely expect to be walking the 2 main steep…
  • I was advised not to use my trail runners on the pavement just because it wears the treads down really fast (maybe kind of like keeping winter tires on in the summer?)
  • @SierraFatToSkinny cute dogs! Yes my dog is lean and fit, she has easily palpable ribs (as a healthy dog should) a nice abdominal tuck and deep chest. She is in excellent health and physical condition. She's a working dog, bred to go all day. Both of my dogs eat an excellent diet that is tailored to their needs :) She's a…
  • @JustSomeEm we saw the vet today and for my dog she said no issues at all, with the reminder that we obviously build up to it and if course that if my dog is along, it's the dogs run and gets adjusted to how she is doing. That being said, my dog is athletic and rarely ever moves just at a walk lol. She is also smaller and…
  • Start slow using some kind of training plan, don't just start where you left off. Other than that, good shoes and you're good to go, assuming you have a clean bill of health otherwise! Drink plenty of water to keep your joints lubricated. Have fun!
  • A few years ago I could only run 3k at this time of year and I ran a half in June (my first one). I used couch to 5k, bridge to 10k then a half marathon training plan, and am doing the same this year. You can do it! There were so many encouraging people it was really amazing. Super fun experience and you'll feel very…
  • Thanks guys! She is very cute and wacky, so fun! They sure make the best running buds! I use RunKeeper as well. @EauRouge1 that is an amazing time way to go!!!
  • My Curly Coated Retriever runs with me, we are working on the couch to 5k with plans to run a half with her in the fall. She is a bonkers working dog and a 5 or 6km run is just a warm up for her. She literally runs circles around me and my other dog (Rhodesian Ridgeback, not especially fond of exercise haha). If the…
  • Hahaha my Rhodesian despises running and hard exercise in general, I would never take him longer than 5 or 6km. My retriever is literally never tired even if we run, do a long hike, and she works all in the same day, multiple days in a row! She is much more capable than I am!!
  • It is a dog-friendly race, with a specific wave for the dog runners, with bibs and timing chips for the dogs  http://www.columbiagorgemarathon.com/ruff-wear-dog-leg/
  • I have been thinking of doing cani-cross with her! :) She is a Curly Coated Retriever, they are a hardy, high energy dog bred to run and swim all day...I literally can not make her tired hahaha.
  • We are lucky to live where the climate is very moderate!
  • Yeah I wonder if she may need to wear booties or something, I guess we'll see how it goes with training. I don't doubt that she will be very capable of running a half, she is athletic and runs very much to please herself haha! But yes, it is important to pay close attention to them and run your dog's run, not your own :)
  • I remember reading about this!!! What a dog! I used to run up to I think 12k or so with my old Lab/Rhodesian cross, that was the distance he enjoyed up to.
  • I am not sure about Pyr's running that distance as I think they are a bit of a heavier boned dog, but certainly worth asking your vet!! I think the important thing is remembering that when we run with our dogs, it's their run not ours, and we have to adjust the run according to their needs. I am pretty sure that since…
  • The suggestion of a rack and panniers is a great one-then you don't have to have a backpack on your back while you're riding. I have a pair and they are super sturdy and handled multiple nursing textbooks when I was in university. They are also waterproof. I have flashing mini lights on my front and rear (white and red…
  • Mine did not need surgical repair but I run and surf and backpack and it's just fine, I just have a slightly smaller range of motion in it. I have a friend who had surgical repair and she does the same. Mind you, neither of us are doing triathlons. I can definitely tell if I'm being lazy and not using proper form, or if I…
  • I'm running a half June 8th, I did my first one last year in June and this is only my second...and my running has been extremely sporadic so I need to get serious about it!
  • That is awesome!! :)
  • The C25k is a great way to start running! :) I completed it before then did the bridge to 10k and in June ran my first half marathon! I'm a fairly slow runner but I enjoy it. I also have asthma but mine is pretty well controlled. Running can be a great weight loss booster and is a great way to feel strong and happy! :)
  • By far my favourite sports bras have been the Moving Comfort "Maia" bra. I normally wear a 36H and in that I buy the 36E and it works well. I wear it running, biking, kayaking, etc etc. I did prefer the older style before they changed them though, there are extra seams on the new ones that I am not sure about. But they…
  • Congratulations! Way to overcome that plateau of losing/gaining the same weight and then get to maintenance!!! :)
  • That is a great accomplishment! And it feels awesome to drop off those clothes, I think it's a good way to adjust mentally to the weight loss especially since you said you feel like it's not much (which is is!). You're well on your way!
