The same morning as a long workout, after using the toilet but before hydrating, I'll see weight loss, sometimes dramatic weight loss. Usually I'm up the next day, but down again 2-3 days later.

When I went on a strict low-carb diet (based on Eades' Protein Power, similar to Atkins), for the first week or so I felt woozy and tired, because according to them my blood was flooded with ketones which are a slower way to transport sugar to the brain. After getting through that zero-carb introductory period, my energy…

Tanita is highly rated in Consumer Reports, and also not too expensive. I have a Tanita scale from about 2005 that reports BMI and seems fairly accurate, and well made.

Timex T5G971 with wrist watch and chest strap. It's well rated and gets good reviews on Amazon and elsewhere. I paid $36 on Amazon, though it seems to have gone up to $45. However, prices fluctuate and if you put it in your shopping cart and watch it for a couple of weeks you may well see it drop again. I've used it for…

You might also try tofu shirataki. It's a noodle made from tofu, and it's quite low calorie and low carb. It's not as cheap as pasta, but it's good for ya', anyway.

Hi Kimandal99, Two questions--do you eat your exercise calories, and has your BMI changed even if your weight is not going down? It sounds like you're living an excellent lifestyle, and they say red wine is good for you. How are you feeling from day to day? Healthy? Sleeping long enough? Maybe you could try shocking your…

I used to love energy bars but these days, I view raw fruit and vegetables as a much superior snack. A stalk of celery is about 15 cals, an apple 80 cals, a cup of grapes about 70 cals, a cup of cherries (yum) 75 cals--and all of that adds up to less than one chocolate Odwalla bar (260). In fact I'm amazed at how low…

I think I look younger. I'm working my way back from a typical overweight middle aged male that I was to more of a slim teenage/college body. Can't do much about my baldness, though. Them's the breaks! Regardless of all that, I definitely feel younger, and to me that's what really counts. Bp

I've been eating most of my exercise calories and so far it doesn't seem to have slowed down my weight loss at all. It's so nice to know I have an extra 500-600 calories. It's like finding free money on the sidewalk! I like to work out a lot early in the A.M. if I know I'm going out to eat, or to a function where they'll…

I love making p-nut butter in my food processor. It's so easy--dump in some peanuts, preferably organic ones, turn it on for about 30 minutes, and like magic it turns into spreadable stuff. There's nothing like warm, fresh peanut butter right out of the machine. I also like to mix in other nuts, for variety. You can make…

I love banananas. It must be my monkey ancestors. I love the high potassium content, which counteracts the sodium in my diet, and they also aid my digestion. They taste great, too. I figure, if a medium bandana is about 100 cals, I can do a vigorous 30 minute midday walk to pay for one. A day without panamas is like a day…

I've only been doing this for 53 days. Daily logging is a commitment to myself to stick to it. I'm not a very stick-to-it kinda guy; I tend to get distracted by the Next Big Thing and get bored with what I'm doing--jobs, books, diets. But this time I'm making a go of it, because #1 it's working and #2 it's kind of fun. The…

Glad to hear you were able to overcome your problems. I'm nowhere near as serious a runner as you are so I guess you're the expert. However--I've been told differently. And to that other person--I don't sell orthotics. They worked for me so I recommend them to people. Guess I'm going to do more reading on the subject.…

Sorry I should have said "Almost all professional runners" or maybe "serious athletes" - whatever the term is for people who run heavily and compete in marathons, half-marathons, and other competitive events. So I have been told by people "in the biz". If you know otherwise, please do elaborate--rather than just…

Hi CL, Go to a runner's clinic (a really good shoe store, or else a sports medicine clinic) where they will video your gait on a treadmill and prescribe a customized orthotic insert. Almost all serious runners use orthotics and it really helps. Good luck, Bp [EDIT] and I agree with Bliss: work out every other day, or every…

Fruit is really good for you; keep eating it. Stevia is a natural herb that appears to be harmless. I've been eating it for years. As another poster says, everything in moderation. Real sugar and stevia are probably safer sweeteners than saccharin, aspartame, and splenda. But a little of anything isn't going to kill you,…

Apart from the theme of "do what works for you", it would be great if people supplied some facts to back up this kind of statement. Give us a study that conclusively shows Atkins leads to higher incidence of stroke. Oh, someone at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston did a 12 week study on mice (who normally don't eat high…

Maybe build up your running muscles first and then transition to bare/nearly-bare feet. A runner with bare feet passed me on the sidewalk the other day during my noon time constitutional. I wanted to stop him and question him but he was moving pretty fast! I guess our ancestors pretty much ran barefoot their whole lives,…

I've done strict low-carb in the past. In my experience, it's a difficult lifestyle to maintain. The MFP lifestyle is easier because you don't end up craving carbs. That said, I try to keep to a low-ish carb diet, and low-ish fat as well. Everything in moderation.

There are tons of great ideas on this board! The traffic here is tremendous--which is not only good for us users, it's great for the management since more ads = more revenue = they'll stay in business. I love working out. I own an elliptical (technically, 2) and it's so convenient to jump on it for 20 minutes in the…

An hour of swimming 3 times a week? That does NOT sound like excessive exercise to me! It might even be too little; generally it's recommended that the average person should do 4-5 days a week of cardio-vascular exercise. I would definitely not cut back on exercise; rather, I would, as the other person suggests, talk to…

The stickies at the top of these topics have some extensive information and discussion. I thought the same thing when I started, and since have come to understand the logic of preventing the body from going into starvation mode. The thing is, I sometimes just don't have the appetite or desire to eat anything more. For…

Eat about three and a half Pepperidge Farm Chocolate Fudge Triple Layer cakes. That should get you up to about 7000 cals. Me, I'd vary it -- one choco, one white, one striped, and like IkeInMass up above suggests, swill it down with a good old Mickie D's milkshake. You could also get almost 1000 cals from a Ben & Jerry's…

February 2011 Consumer Reports magazine rates the Timex Personal Trainer (T5G971) for $50 as a best buy. It has a chest strap. The Polar FT7 is quite a ways down on the list but is still "recommended". They recommend using a chest strap. Pretty much, all the monitors they tested were acceptable, except for the LifeSpan…

My rule of thumb is about 10-12 cals/minute for high energy workouts (running, elliptical cross-trainer) and 3-4 cals for a brisk walk. I'm using the low end of the calorie estimates, though, and I don't have a heart monitor either (would also love to know a good one). I haven't tried zumba but it's hard to imagine it's…
