I had the same issue when starting to lift. I couldn't get the plates high enough for good form. So I grabbed those aerobic steps and placed the barbell with one step on each side of the plate. I'm going to start doing some cardio on off days. I don't walk and move around as much as I should (desk job etc). I have an elliptical at home, going to try and do 30 mins on that on off days.

Thanks! I am really excited to keep adding weights and push myself. I do find that I am more intimidated in my own mind about the weights. I am trying to think more about form then the actual weight that is on the bar. Hard to do.
