This happened to me when I was 12. I had filled out early and I knew I looked fantastic (and looking back on the pics from then I most certainly did) but a friend of my mum told her (with me in earshot) that I was looking fat and needed to lose the weight. My mum told her friend where to go and it seriously soured the…

I started weightloss when I was 44, got to goal at 45 and am still here at 46. Since my late teens I was overweight, and now weigh less than I did when I was 18. Sometimes I wish I had started sooner, but most of the time I realise that I did it at the right time as my life would have been different as I would have done…

Thank you so much for posting all about your day - it looks like you both had a fantastic time.
-
Also, when instead of counting sheep to fall asleep you plan the morning's swim and count laps in your head instead to relax/
-
So true! I go through 4 bottles of conditioner for every bottle of shampoo
-
20m pool for me - makes counting km swum easy, but in miles its just over 80 lengths for 1 mile.

English backstroke (as I recently learnt from a South African) is a leisurely backstroke with both arms working in sync - like breastroke on your back :)
-
Had a really good swim today, 200m x back / 200m x breast / 200m x crawl and repeat - total 3km. Followed by butterfly (1 length fly, 1 length english backstroke and repeat for 5). That was plenty for me.

I have a few of mine own experiences and I absolutely believe in ghosts. I won't go into details (would take too much time) but 4 of the ghosts were nice and I felt relaxed with them. 2 of them absolutely were not nice and I found a couple of stern "get the F*** out" worked (unfortunately one of these didn't make itself…

First all welcome to the fabulous world of swimming! I can't really add much to the advice above (Mrs J1 says it all) except that keep going for lessons while you have the budget for it, and make sure you practice in between. Search youtube for videos - there are loads out there that will give you starter tips and…

Mrs J1 that is impressive. Might have to do something like that myself. Swam yesterday and today - did the same thing both days - 2km in 45 mins mixing up free, breast and back. Pool was too busy to get any fly done.

Favourite favourties are Ginger Tosser, Tea (yes there is a beer called tea) and Ubuntu pure. Also loving the BrewDog Punk IPA and the Meantime brews. London is getting good for beer selection these days.

Swimming is my main love Kung Fu is fun to get my agression out Hiking (geocaching) at the weekends - got to get back to nature for the that feel good factor

I don't notice it in my hair and just use normal shampoo and conditioner. For the body just shower gel on its own is not enough - I take a bamboo type sponge in the shower and that rough scrub gets the chlorine off then lotion (cocoa butter at the moment) works a treat.

I second AquaticQuests invite - come join us swimmers group. When I wanted to lose weight I started swimming - I could just manage 1 length of crawl before stopping, but kept going and swam a 5km charity event 6 months later (in 1 hour 59 mins). By watching my food and swimming most days the weight fell off (42 pounds in 6…

Just back from the pool on this horrible wet UK bank holiday - repeated yesterday's session and finished with 4 laps of fly (but with breaks in between).

Keep walking. Not just for keeping your body healthy but keeps the mind going aswell. I love just walking and looking around and seeing things that i just wouldn't notice otherwise. I do swim most days, but also walk an average of 12,000 steps (5.5 miles for me) a day. And when I don't I miss it. Weight loss is different…

Another great swim this morning. Alternated 200m back, 200m crawl, 200m breast for an hour with a final distance of 2.5km. Feeling good.

In the swimmers group on this board there is a thread about this - I can't remember what was recommended but it was one of the Polar ones. Join us swimmers.

Morning everyone. Just back from my later than normal Saturday morning swim. 440m breast, 440m back, 720m free, then 200m back, 200m breast, 400m free. Finished with a couple of fly laps and finally managed to do 40m non-stop (2 lengths) - woo hoo! I am getting there.

Getting fit and losing weight through swimming inspired me to go back to my old Kung Fu classes. Re-joined that at the end of last year and my weekly regime is now: Mornings - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and/or Sunday - swimming Tues night 1 hour Kung Fu and Thursday night 2 hours Kung fu. Friday - well…

I hope they work as well for you as they do for me :)

This post got me trying this. I am rubbish at it. If my left arm is at the bottom I can get my fingers close (but nost touching) but when I switch to my right I have no flexibility. Really interested to read about the towel and I will get using that.

Back in the water this morning after a rest yesterday & did my normal 2km. What was best of all is that for the first 20 mins I had the entire pool to myself. Wonderful. Then just 2 people arrived and we had lanes to ourselves for the rest of the swim. Doesn't get more relaxing than that.

You have really got to experiment to find what works. On weekdays I swim 2km on a completely empty stomach (not even a drink) and I am perfectly fine. On Saturdays, I have a cup of tea first and find no difference in performance.

I can't answer for an arthritic shoulder, but do know that swimming is always the most proscribed exercise for joint pains (next to walking). It would certainly help with the knees (just no breaststroke legs) but I don't know about the shoulder. I would ask your mum to seek medical/physio advice first - especially if you…

Yep - go to M&S - they do good packs of 2 pretty bras (and t-shirt bras) for around £20-£25 pounds. Make sure you try them on as the sizing can be a bit off - I have had to go up/down a cup and/or back size when buying there in order to get the correct fit.
-
I lost 2 sizes on my back and one from the cup so went from a 36DD to a 32E.

Toxic Avenger - class! I recently rediscovered the police academy movies - they now make me laugh so much I almost hate myself.

Logging everything for that wake-up call. Then cut out pasta altogether (to me anything but an extra large portion is not worth it). Took up swimming again after 30 years.
