  • A scientific study from several years back indicated that ellipticals "can" be really hard on the ankles, knees, hips, and/or back because many lock the foot into a fixed position (I cannot find the journal article now). I've been uneasy about the machines ever since. I would probably go for a walk instead if you are…
  • This is why I am following a vegan diet, but do not claim the "Vegan" title. I like just "plant based" too. :glasses:
  • Olives, and, therefore, muffalettas. Blech!
  • I've tried every nacho cheez recipe I've found, and my favorite so far: http://happyherbivore.com/recipe/low-fat-vegan-nachos/ For me, my cheese cravings stopped almost immediately upon quitting dairy. But I still miss gooey nachos, so this fills in that texture hole. Check out blogs and cookbooks by: Dreena Burton, Isa…
  • For protein: seitan, spinach, TVP, peas, peanuts and peanut butter, almonds, bulgur, and quinoa are some of your best bets to try while you continue to weigh the beans issue. I second the "make sure dry beans are thoroughly cooked," especially kidney beans. They are toxic if not cooked all the way through.
  • Mushrooms are a type of fungus, so too is mold. Tempeh is produced via fungal fermentation. Other foods made by fermentation include: cheese, dry sausages, sake, wine, beer, cider, bread, kimchi, yogurt, and sauerkraut ... to name a couple. Fermentation can be tasty, as long as you aren't allergic to it!!!
  • Buddhist monks eat soy because they are vegetarians, and it is an inexpensive source of protein. Soy actually has a protective effect again prostate cancer. Guys who are concerned about their estrogen levels probably should stop eating meat before they give up soybeans. Ranchers fatten cattle by offering them a high…
  • Vegan here, with a little v. I would ask yourself why you want to make a change, and how much you love meat. Because I usually try to talk meat lovers out of being veggie ... you feel too deprived. Having said that, your list is not that long ... yet. I started developing allergies in my late 20s, including dairy.…
  • Make a post-it note and stick it on the food so you are as accurate as possible with either "name of recipe," ingredients, serving size, or all of them. This does make it difficult, I agree. Best of luck on finding a system that works for you.
  • I have never been able to stay awake during Shakespeare ... But then again, Joss Whedon can do no wrong. Ugh, so torn!
  • Last year, being as I was teaching college, I went as Sarah Connor - leather pants, leather jacket, and black tank. I don't think anyone commented on my attire. Maybe with a full compliment of firearms I would have made a bigger impact?
  • I do have to shamefully admit to owning the disasters that came after, but only because the spouse wanted it! (Shakes head) How do I get myself in these situations?
  • I support all the Fs too: Futurama, Farscape, Firefly! The new V, I couldn't, the writing was simply undigestible.
  • Hm, being the exact opposite, I do not know how much help I can give. Kudos to you for adding vegetables into your diet, it can be really hard to break away from the parental diet. Keep at it and you will figure out the path that works for you. Research green smoothies, they are generally berry based with spinach, kale, or…
  • Go ahead and try a dairy free diet. At the bottom of an ingredients list, look for the allergen components, if it lists milk, put the product back I had a disease that cleared up after being dairy free for two weeks. While I never experienced "typical" dairy allergy symptoms, being disease free is worth it. Your cravings…
  • Ztdavis82, I've read wonderful stories from plantar fasciitis sufferers who made the switch and now run injury free. However, I do not know any personally. If you decide to transition, I would begin a walking program for a couple weeks, and when you decide to do your first run, go no further than 1/3 of a mile ... and your…
  • From everything that I have read, new runners adjust to the minimalist/barefoot style much more easily than trained runners. Bone remodeling can take anywhere from 8 months to 6 years depending on the location and stress it is under. Our feet and legs will require a great deal of remodeling when we start running and/or…
  • There are few useful exercises working hamstrings and glutes that do not involve the knees in some way. What is wrong with your knees? Worn cartilage? Bionic replacements? Knees need to strengthen in order to handle the stress of a workout. We all have a learning curve for how much is just enough to push our joints without…
  • I purchased from a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) this year, and it really pushed me to try new recipes because some of the vegetables were things with which I had no previous experience. Sometimes I did have produce go bad because I couldn't use it fast enough, one visit fills a whole fridge shelf. Other times, it…
  • At some point, the only way to "easily" blast fat is with a heavy weight lifting program. I am following the "New Rules of Lifting for Abs" title, though there are many other weight lifting programs to look into. Heavy lifting for women gives us a nice, lean, and strong figures.
  • There's a fairly active Happy Herbivores group that includes a range of veg*n or "plant strong" eaters. Just about every major vegan cookbook author has a blog with recipes available to try. My favorite is Dreena Burton, I like her use of flavor and spices, as well as her cuisine fusion approach. Also, if you lift weights,…
  • I also owned a pair of VFF Sprints, and detested them. There are enough styles available to make it worth your while to find "your" style of shoe. I did not like the Ecco Biom line nor did I like the Vivobarefoot Neos I bought. VFF KSO Treks are apparently "my" shoe, I guess it is good that I have that backup pair!
  • I have 3 pair of VFF KSO Treks, and got a blister when doing cross training ... Treks are heavily lugged for trail type runs. I bought several pair of smartwool toe socks to wear in my Treks and practically cannot work out in anything else now. I run, kickbox, and lift exclusively in my VFFs (or barefoot). I find most…
  • Quiches, dinner leftovers, dairy replacements, beans. I like the coconut milk yogurts better than the almond or soy varieties, but you should try them all. Refried beans with veggies and salsa and a tortilla. A lot of dairy free milks can directly replace animal milk in recipes, so do not feel you need to give something up…
  • I gave up dairy due to skin issues, and have never looked back. I didn't crave any after a couple of days ... which lends credence to the addictive properties of cheese! There are some edible cheese replacements these days, I like Daiya best. Almond, Soy, Oat, Rice, Cashew, Coconut etc. milks are easy to find and make (if…
  • I'm another Garden of Life RAW protein fan. I get the unflavored and add it into green berry smoothies, etc. Of the three or so protein products I've tried, this is the best.
  • It's important to keep in mind that we are asking a lot of our bodies ... massive diet and workout changes can really throw our former couch resting selves into difficult adjustment periods. We have to re-learn to listen to our bodies signals and develop our personal coping mechanisms: is that a good sore feeling or a…
  • I've had this same issue, and used to eat similar breakfasts to yourself. Having changed to eating more protein heavy breakfasts has helped reduce my hunger issues throughout the day. Tempeh and quinoa are pretty regular breakfast ingredients for me now (I follow a vegan diet, but your options may be much wider spread -…
  • I kind of like seeing bugs in my produce, it means something can live on my food, not die from my food. And I am talking small numbers of bugs ... I've found a caterpillar or two and several aphids over the years. I'm very anti-chemical, because I do not know what that chemical soup is doing to my body (and my loved one's…
  • I keep baker's semisweet dark chocolate on hand for cravings, and allow myself up to one serving a day. I also have chocolate chips in the pantry for when I need chocolate chip cookies - homemade is so much better than store bought.
