  • Thelma, Just remember that those of us who exercise regularly to tough workouts tend to have a much higher pain tolerance than those who do not. So, no freaking out just yet ... best to concentrate on getting the best surgery center and surgeon. It almost feels like a secondary ganglion cyst OR a callus, but it too deep to…
  • Tami, I did HiiT Circuit Upper Body yesterday, and I loved it. I did have to modify a couple movements for my shoulder (but that is almost second nature now). So nice to see some completely new exercises (and they work, of course). It kept my heart rate up and I finished practically before I started. Short workouts are…
  • I would do up to 3 full body workouts per week with a day of rest between. Women tend to recover faster than men, and can shorten the amount of rest time needed between workouts. If you are going to split your lifts, make sure you have adequate recovery between. Additionally, rule of thumb is your heart needs a day of rest…
  • Home. Outdoors, Squat Rack, Floor, Barbell, Dumbbells, Bands, Ball, Treadmill, DVDs by Cathe, Ilaria Montagnani, Rodney Yee, Shiva Rea. Granted, these items are spread through three rooms in my house, so efficiency is not necessarily the name of the game. FYI - Most studies show we get better workouts with free-weights…
  • Thelma, I understand your position thoroughly. I did not think I would ever get into yoga either. It was a gradual change (it also helped to find the intermediate/advanced poses). If you want a yoga challenge, I recommend these DVDs: Rodney Yee's "Advanced Yoga" (a lot of floor work, hip opening, and floor balancing…
  • Hello all, I just completed STS Meso 1 ... those pushups never did become any easier! You know, when I do not perform ball wall squats for a while and return, I'm ALWAYS shocked by how tough they are to hold for any length of time. And yet, that strength returns quickly. Is this how aging catches up to us? We just stop and…
  • I'm pinching the supraspinatus tendon. Which is leading to some lifting difficulties. My PT hates upright row ALWAYS (he wants the movement banished!) He urged me to lay off front or side raise and overhead presses while I'm recovering. Proper pushups staying within alignment plane are okay. I'm doing side lying laterals…
  • I ran on treadmills for over a year before venturing outside. I find steady-state more common outside, while I'll choose a hill/sprint program on the treadmill. As I live in a flat area, the treadmill pushes me in some ways. But I like to run with my pup, and he can't run on the treadmill with me, so to the outdoors we…
  • Hello Everyone ... lotsa updates ... 1st, Thelma, I second the suggestion to find out what is causing your shoulder issues. What moves may cause the problem, what moves exacerbate the problem, and what moves can improve the problem (I started PT last week for my own shoulder. Similar boat.) So sorry about the idiot that…
  • There was an interesting weight study done and televised on PBS? several years back ... the researchers studied several "naturally thin (NT)" individuals. These NTs were placed on a high calorie diet, I believe it was 5000 calories a day. Most of them had a very difficult problem meeting that goal (as you can imagine).…
  • Q - Does anyone else run simply for the calorie burn? I used to STEP, mostly Cathe of course, but I've flipped my ankles and kicked the step out from under me too many times. I finally gave up on it for the most part. I have a couple Jari Love DVDs that utilize the step, and I find the repetition reduces my injury…
  • Thelma, I feel for you. (Completely unsupportive boss - check, shoulder issues - check). The book "The Male Factor: The Unwritten Rules, Misperceptions, and Secret Beliefs of Men in the Workplace" by Shaunti Feldhaun was very helpful to me in figuring out why men do, think, and say the things they do. (It even enlightened…
  • The chemical characteristics which give these molecules fat solubility generally translates to "I don't like water" (hydrophobic). Cell waste is dumped into the blood stream, and carried throughout the entire body. Granted, both the kidneys and liver filter the blood, but the first opportunity fat soluble chemicals have to…
  • PapaChanoli, There appears to be an interesting mix of science and pseudo-science in this article. I'm intrigued by the fat soluble chemical release along with fat loss research. That makes a great deal of sense ... if there are no additional fat cells to enter, then fat soluble chemicals will flush from the system.…
  • You are all giving me lots of ideas! Excellent job. mruntidy - beautiful work
  • Yep, another Dresden fan. I liked the TV show as well ... have it on DVD. Also wish it had run longer ... as well as "Firefly", "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and "Witchblade" and, and, and ... you know, TV shows kinda suck with their short runs. (Or I'm unlucky enough to fall for the ones that don't have a big following.)…
  • Mostly tongue in cheek ... Alrightly then, I made it through Pyramid Upper earlier in the week and Pyramid Lower this morning. Does anyone else think Cathe's weight changes are supernaturally fast? Do they speed up the rests while I'm not watching? (Talk about pause and rewind ... several times.) Seriously, I swear there…
  • Calliope610, You can absolutely "transform your body." I'd love to see another "mature" woman joining Ernestine and showing all the youngsters how awesome lifting can be. http://exrx.net/WeightTraining/Weightlifting/Masters.html I like the suggestions made in the above article ... I do think soreness will be a huge factor,…
  • Prep everything the night before, set the alarm for 20-30 before you want to start working out, and get up when it goes off. Your first couple days will throw you, but then you settle into a routine and wonder why you ever did it any other way. I prefer to keep the same schedule on the weekends as well.
  • Laurel, I've put your total body weight lifting DVD suggestions to good use. They are a nice break between meso quarters! :) Admittedly, each one of the workouts has a killer section where I keep dropping weights as I attempt to get through the entire rep cycle!!! Wow. I've done Muscle Endurance, Power Hour, and…
  • I've read that women's muscles recover faster following lifting, so we do not need as much recovery time as males. I would pay close attention to how you are feeling in the days following routines, as that will tell you how well/quickly you are recovering and what routine schedule works best for you.
  • Jumping Jacks.
  • Today I finished my 3rd week of Meso3 ... chest and back. I've hit PRs in 3 lifts this week - deadlift, row, and bench press. I came out of this workout feeling so strong and accomplished. Watching myself in the mirror while doing jumping jacks between sets, I could almost see the results for which I've been working.…
  • Laurel, Best of luck on the jobs discussions ... I had plenty of time on Friday, and, admittedly, a couple extra calories to burn since I was a bit bad with the chocolate ... and the peanut butter ... and the book reading that encourages me to chew and chew and chew. So, yes, both leg workouts. Not as bad as my first Meso…
  • Thelma and Tami, I really wasn't expecting to, however ... yes, I could move! ... mostly ... Although there is definitely some soreness deep in my glutes. Okay, it is not that bad. Kira
  • Thelma, Last night was Meso3 Plyo Legs 26 AND Squat Legs 37 ... I could almost see the newly destroyed and built muscle this morning in the mirror! (I wonder if I will be able to move in the morning?) Today was Abs, Kick Max, and part of another video to finish me off. In the past I had to skip half the blasts, but…
  • Ehh, probably not. There's some support that spot concentrated exercises do increase heat in the specific working muscle(s), which "may" facilitate a bit more fat use in the immediate vicinity ... but not enough to see visible changes. I agree with other posters, weight lifting is your best bet for strengthening the body…
  • This week is my rest week, and (in some ways) I can't wait for it to be over!!! I suspect I'm addicted to working out ... I don't get the adrenaline rush with running, but give me an hour's worth of interval training/kickboxing/weight lifting, and I am feeling great for the rest of the day. So I've been yoga-ing…
  • I recommend Ilaria Montagnani Powerstrike/Kickboxing DVDs, Amy Bento (Ross) Kickbox Xtreme and Kickbox Surge (I don't like Body Box as well, but it is an option), and Susan Chung's Rapid Fire DVDs. I feel like their form is excellent, and teaching ability high. Some people really like Cathe Freidrich's Kick Max and Kick,…
  • Michelle, Thanks for the heads up ... and OH NO! I've purchased quite a few DVDs from Collage over the years. They will be missed. Kira
