  • ntnuck - maybe that is the problem. Anyway, I'm trying it again today. I commuted in to work (18miles), and this time I just hit STOP and then powered the Edge 500 off. When I bike home tonight, I will just power it on, hit start, and I guess I'll see what GC and Strava show.
  • Passed through some nice farms & fields on my commute home. This is a slightly different route...I think I will keep going this way for a while. Too bad the low sun messed up the lens a bit, because it looked much nicer to the eye!
  • My wife has a Walmart hybrid type bike that is, honestly, perfect for the paved MUPs we occasionally ride on with it. That said, I don't think that will work for LifeInthebikelane ;)
  • I'm using a Garmin Edge 500. When I tried this, I hit the stop button to manually pause the ride. It eventually powered itself off after sitting idle for a while. Later, I turned it back on, and hit start to resume. Later after uploading to Strava, it showed the ride to be for the entire time and also calculated things…
  • I'll add that while Strava doesn't care, using an HRM with Garmin does seem to improve (significantly deflates) my calorie numbers to reasonable estimates, so their algorithm might be useful. That said, my HRM is an absolute finicky P.I.T.A. on rides with wind, so I've recently stopped using it for outdoor work and just…
  • Unless things have changed, Strava doesn't factor HR data into calorie counts. They use power (whether from a meter or their own estimated power calculations. Garmin Connect does use HR data. See: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/34307080-Different-Calorie-calculations-for-Garmin-vs-Strava-
  • Great pic ^^ !
  • I'd just say give it some time...but if you are looking specifically for workouts, maybe some core work, sit-ups, planks, push ups, and such -- along with eating a little more to fuel your recovery.
  • Just saw this. Wow. Regardless of who was at fault here, having a mirror will tell you when someone is going to drive into you...you gotta have awareness! Also - I love how this guys buddies are so careful to park their bikes in a safe spot before dragging him off the road! And - glad the guy wasn't smashed up like…
  • I wouldn't worry about it unless you do this on a regular basis :) You can have a few drinks for under 500 calories. Go for an extra walk the next day or the day before and you'll be fine.
  • I agree -- great point -- and I also work in some standing into every ride! It just feels good to stretch out and use a bunch of different muscles from time to time, and I also think it helps avoid numbness in many areas. And the power burst is also enjoyable, once you get used to doing it regularly. Comes in handy when…
  • My rear tire is wearing out fast too and I only replaced it in March I think. I have read http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-rotation.html and it makes sense from a safety standpoint to never rotate a used tire to the front. So either replace as a set...or if you are replacing just one, then put the brand new one on the front,…
  • Same thing here for me. I also tend to tense up when pushing hard up hills so I am always reminding myself to relax and don't shrug up the shoulders, keep upper body stable, elbows slightly bent. I think TheBigYin mentioned Souplesse in a thread some months ago here and after I Googled some images of riders associated with…
  • welcome fry5150  I live and ride in upstate NY, in the Hudson Valley region. Lots of great terrain here for road and mountain riding! Let me guess; VH music fan?
  • Good luck man! I'll add that cycling is a great way to do some regular cardio and not get bored to hell. Cycling & MFP helped me more than anything else drop the weight. Remember too that success mostly depends on controlling your calories -- how much you are eating on a regular basis. Exercise is secondary to that. It is…
  • Sounds like a good start to me. Make sure you are counting accurately. My guess you are consuming a little more calories than you think. It is probably the most common problem. You are obviously eating at a loss, but may need to adjust things a little.
  • I was almost right hooked this past Thursday. A nice lady in a crossover SUV type car, speed up and cut right in front of me to make her right turn instead of waiting the 0.2 seconds extra for me to have cleared the road first. I didn't even have time to react in the slightest bit. I didn't even get the adrenaline surge…
  • Same story here...I like Strava enough to pay for it..and I also like it as an independent org. As a business case though, I can't see how the UA acquisition people aren't pursuing this. It just fits into their strategy. Bleh.
  • I used MMR for a couple years. I think i is a solid app. My only complaint is that it tends to give slightly better times over the same courses as Strava. I ran both at the same time and I think MMR may have a less conservative smoothing algorithm in the GPS analysis. Just a guess. Never had any issue with either insofar…
  • Looks great, Yin!
  • Keep up the good work; slow and steady as they say. I had what I thought was a heart attack about four years ago and it turns out it was just really bad high blood pressure. Anyway, regular biking and using MFP to drop fat was the best thing I did for my health. So I am glad your are on the right path and working out and…
  • Well, we could try it over and over until it finally works. Its only fair, right?

  • I like this...so lets say we mandate that everyone gets the exact same pay no matter what the profession. Sound good?

  • Yeah, east coast of the US is expensive, especially in the Boston<->DC corridor, although if you are far enough from the metro areas, prices aren't bad. That said, I was able to live pretty cheaply in my 20s (this was a while ago, hah, but I think I was making about &8.50/hr) by just renting a whole house with four other…

  • $15/hr you will probably force base prices come up to compensate, so some of this will directly be passed on to the consumers, although some businesses will try to do more with fewer people and/or cutting hours. Those that are already operating on a tight margin will close. Lots of side effects, and not all of them are…

  • Pinch flats are self evident due to the snake fang look of the puncture(s), and those can be mitigated with proper pressure and riding style. Now, other puncture types -- figuring out where the puncture is happening helps. If the tube keeps getting punctured in the same place, you can figure out the cause pretty easy. For…
  • worthwhile read; thanks for the link OP.
  • Glad things are looking up for you TBY. Keep at it!
  • Yeah, its definitely oriented to the data geeks I suppose :) Guess I have enough of that in me to like it (hah). I can see this as really nice for someone who wants to improve their time on, say, a race or to keep up a certain pace with a riding group, and wondering what would happen if they altered variables in their…
