http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/its-time-to-end-the-war-on-salt/ I'm not saying I necessarily agree with the article, but perhaps the fuss over sodium might be a bit over hyped by the medical establishment. IMHO, make sure you drink enough water to flush it out and watch the blood pressure if you have…

Cold cereal & 2% milk is a great and quick standby. Slice up a banana into it or some blueberries or strawberries for extra enjoyment. For something hot - an egg or two scrambled and fried up with some optional cheese into a 8" tortilla can be eaten on the go. This takes less than five minutes to make.

Those wind trainers are Jet engine LOUD though! I'd say it is worth it to go for a fluid one, especially if you have neighbors or little kids trying to sleep. AND if you want to watch TV while your pedaling :)

Those upright, compact ones look like a good match for the space issue, but I agree that a recumbent unit like the ones in gyms look a lot sturdier and match the weight tolerances better. But they are too expensive and big. Just don't see a good answer with the price point, space, and weight limit parameters. If you go…

Just curious...what kind of space limits and price limits are good for you OP? Might help with the suggestions.

If you keep your eye on eBay and Craigslist, I bet you can pick up a nice used spin bike for a couple hundred bucks. With that, you can follow along on some of the spin class videos freely available on YouTube.

I find it useful to officially log weigh-ins only every 2 or 3 weeks, be it a gain or a loss, to smooth out the daily fluctuations I see from water weight changes. Otherwise, as an example, I'd have a 3lb loss one day, then maybe a 2.5lb gain the next, then a 2lb loss the following day; logging this would look dumb on the…

Welcome and good luck Colleen! MFP is really a great tool.

Wow -- what a nostalgia hit I just got seeing these shots. Loved the AE-1 and the K1000 back in the day. I never had either, but used both borrowed from friends. I miss using film cameras, it was quite a hobby for me growing up. I still have an old Yashica GSN I bought as a little kid as I can't bear to get rid of it. That…

I don't go to Starbucks often, but yesterday I got a large blonde with a little half&half and some Splenda! Real basic, but it was good, and easily under 100 cal.

I wanted to empathize with the OP's point at first. But when I saw the price tag, I switched sides ;)

I say brace yourself and recommit to your goals and deal with it day-to-day. Remember, most of the effort is in the kitchen, not in the gym. It isn't so bad feeling a bit hungry sometimes. Find a very low calorie food to eat to bridge those points when you just have to have something. A big salad with no cheese, no…

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you too, and everyone here :)

I have to agree with the OP's sentiments a bit. But I think servings/plates/portions have grown to huge amounts in recent years and this is culturally established as normal eating, at least in the USA. So that fuels the problem. I say, overindulge now and then, but mostly get used to eating what your body needs and enjoy…

Some years ago I read a book by Jared, the Subway Guy. He said he was able to stick with his 2 sandwiches a day diet because it allowed him 18" of bread a day, which he loved to eat, and still be in a calorie deficit.

Nice chart - and it explains a lot. I'll keep trying the standing effort. I'm going to keep the roller frame through a door frame next time just for loss of control insurance. Might hit some roller work today as I have been using my new trainer all week.
-
(I meant "the difference is not as large as I was expecting" when comparing resistance/effort levels from rollers to trainer.)
-
Interesting info. This is probably why I was a little perplexed at some comments that rollers did not give much exercise. The only set of rollers I have and used are aluminum "reduced radius" 2.25" as you detailed. So the type that has more resistance. In top gear and going 20+ mph at around 90-100 rpm it is sufficiently…

Potato soup, and Pan-cooked home fries are some of my favorites. Also, I recently came up with something new too. I scrub the skins, but leave them on and poke some holes in them with a fork. Then I zap them in the microwave for about 2-4 min per potato so that they are partially cooked but still a bit too firm to eat.…

Ham is good, I love that too, but you might take in too much salt with that as a regular part of diet. Pepperoni is high fat & salt, so use it more as a flavoring instead of a main source of calories and protein. I agree with the comments that eggs/chicken/turkey are a better as a regular mainstay protein, IMO. Good luck!

Just put an order in for a Cycleops II fluid trainer...I hope this is a decent enough? I plan to alternate with roller work. Just need some videos to keep the brain occupied. Oh, and roller workouts are getting easier as far as balance. I can drink without crashing and also go no hands when I like. It is really helping…

Well, I definitely am getting some good sweat going at least. And my balance is getting better. Did a couple miles no hands! Watching TV is no problem now as well. And managed to drink from the water bottle without stopping on the rollers too...but it was a close call :) I still can't stand for long without risking going…

I feel this way a lot. I was able to deal with it by either just envisioning that the hungry feeling was fat getting successfully burned off. OR - trying to feel fuller by having a coffee and a nice BIG salad with low-cal dressing to make it to the next meal. I think my body also got used to less full feeling and less food…

* Accurate logging with MFP * No grazing, esp after dinner * Go to sleep instead of late night snacking/leftovers * Don't finish my kids leftovers! Always tempting... * Just don't give in to hunger pangs when you know you have eaten enough * Exercise helps, but control diet is 90% of the effort

this page no longer seems to exist.

kcjchang - i agree with most of your points, but I will say that I get plenty of calorie burn on the rollers in high gear and at 80+ cadence rates. My HR is easily put at threshhold and I can feel the lactate burn. There is no coasting at all and it is quite a workout. In fact, I think I burn more on them than I do on a…

I'm thinking of adding either a fan or perhaps making a magnetic resistance unit myself though. Or just get a trainer as a supplement.

If you have to hit McD's, I recommend that Sausage Burrito and a coffee with cream, no sugar, off the value menu. This is a breakfast that is about 350 calories. The price is even better, $2.00 + tax. They probably lose money on this deal. And there are worse breakfasts. I'm a tall guy and just over 200lbs and it is enough…

Those look pretty cool, Cloggsy. I wonder if the rear wheel drifts side to side on that at all?

Thanks, I checked some of the hits suggested by Google at lunch. Might be a good winter project. I can deal with sitting and keeping the bike going, but I'd really like to incorporate standing on them too. The floating base mod doesn't look all that difficult to build. If I do it, I'll post here about it.
