  • The thing is that I'm not going to get out of bed for something I don't really, really want to do. I really, really want to get paid, so I get up for work. And I really, really want to run before it gets hot, so I get out of bed for that, but I'm not going to get out of bed at 4:30 for something that doesn't excite me. So…
  • These formulas were published in a running magazine (maybe Runner's World) years ago. I wish I could remember with certainty, but it was a long time ago and I've just used those formulas since.
  • I found that calculating calories in was much easier than calculating calories out, but I was really relying on calories out for a good part of my deficit, so accuracy was critical. Especially since I didn't really have much weight to lose.
  • OP, you might be interested in reading 80/20 Running by Matt Fitzgerald. It explains how to get faster running 80% of your training runs at an easy pace and how running faster all the time is not a good training strategy.
  • This is how I calculate calories burned: For running the formula is body weight in pounds X .63 X miles. For walking the formula is body weight in pounds X .33 X miles. I don't bother counting lifting because there is no really good way to estimate calories burned.
  • How are you burning this many calories, that's an awful lot. By comparison, I burn ~452 calories on a six mile run and roughly 150 calories in a lifting session.
  • That's not really true. You get faster by running farther. Once you have a solid base you can start incorporating special runs like, speed runs, fartleks, etc. but first you need a solid base. If I were you, I would look for a training program written by a running coach. Amazon is full of good running books.
  • I strive for balance in my life. Balance between career and family, between exercise and lying on the couch, balance in the foods I eat.
  • Foam rolling helped me and was recommended by my doctor, but I found that stretching helps even more. You might want to be assessed by a PT to determine any muscle imbalances. My problem is that my posterior chain is too tight, so I'm always stretching.
  • I would repeat C25K and slow down. Slow way down. Slow down so far that, if you had to, you could carry a conversation easily.
  • I'm not a morning person, but I still manage to get up and 4:50am so that I can run before work. I make sure to set out everything I'm going to need the night before. I run at work and shower there, so that means that the night before I'm setting out running clothes, work clothes, shower essentials, and my lunch. After a…
  • We recently moved into the Sierra foothills where it's like camping only I'm in my house. I've never been so relaxed in my life. Every day when I leave work, I leave all the stress of the world behind and retreat into my own forest.
  • I agree. Also, "lifestyle change". I didn't change my lifestyle at all, nor am I on a journey other than the same journey everyone else on the planet is on. All I did was decrease my caloric intake for a time.
  • Is it going to be cold, or just wet? If it's going to be just wet you'll want a rain poncho or jacket that you can toss when you get too hot or it stops raining a brimmed hat or visor to keep the rain out of your eyes If it's going to be cold too you'll want layers you can remove as you warm up possibly gloves (my hands…
  • When I was in weight loss mode, I was most certainly on a diet (defined as to restrict oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight). I didn't change my diet (the types of foods I eat, or my way of eating), but I did temporarily restrict calories.
  • If you're looking for something to do at home, I like Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube.
  • That wouldn't be a taco.
  • I wouldn't change anything. When I started running my feet would feel very tender, but over time I built up the callouses I needed to make running comfortable.
  • If it were me, I would do C25k and walk the balance of the 5.5 miles to keep the distance. Once I'd finished C25k, I'd work on running the remaining distance. And remember that the running portions should be so slow that you could maintain a conversation while running. I think that's totally doable.
  • I would see a sports medicine doctor. It could be any number of things: wrong shoes, building too fast, bad form, etc. Let a doctor decide.
  • "I can't lose weight because... ...I'm too old" ...I'm menopausal." ...I have hypothyroidism." ...I have a slow metabolism." "You're slim because you're lucky to have a fast metabolism."
  • I think you should just run in a way that feels natural and that doesn't cause injury. Where I land on my feed depends on how fast I'm running and I don't worry about it.
  • You're probably just retaining water. When we start a new exercise and our muscles are being worked in new ways they retain water to help in healing. I'd give it another month before I started changing things.
  • "I follow a fitness program that doesn't involve walking." I don't know why being blunt would be a problem, but I dislike verbosity.
  • Or just eat a fish you like the flavor of.
  • That's correct. I don't have a thyroid, but I lost weight at the expected rate and with no greater effort than a normal person.
  • I didn't throw up during my marathon, but my hands did swell, as they do after most long runs and all hikes. The swelling is because of how you hold your hands while walking and running, not because you've had too much to drink. I also didn't want to eat after my marathon. I was too tired to be hungry. It sounds like your…
  • I leave the pit in the portion I'm not going to eat, then I squirt a little lime juice on the flesh, wrap it tightly in plastic and store in the refrigerator. But lets be honest, I almost never have any avocado left over. I just eat the whole thing.
  • If I can't find a whole food entry that makes sense I go to the USDA database and make my own entry. I do this a lot even if I can find a food on MFP because I'd just rather know for sure that my entry is correct. For packaged foods I keep looking for entries that match the package or make my own.
  • So, if you need to lose weight, but were instead gaining weight because you went 1000 calories over your limit every day in vegetables, you'd be happy about that?
