Just turned 45 and never felt better...the biggest change from the 40s is really lack of time! Would welcome any friends to commiserate.

I'm an engineer and cofounder of a tech startup. Not a lot of downtime for health, cooking, or fitness, but I'm trying!
-
Please add me. I'm always inspired but other's progress.

Always looking for new people to support and support me. Feel free to add me.

Hey Pete, Yeah of course. 2 friends, now it's a party.
-
Alright, my first friend! Thanks!

I always find a walk and a talk with a lively woman to completely relieve boredom. Most times I don't want the conversation and the walk to end!
-
I see where you can change it. Thanks for pointing that out!

Just got a Vivofit and it's great. I'm an engineer, so I'm basically glued in front of a computer all day. So far this innocuous device has been a great reminder to get up and move. I did research on all of the models you mentioned, but decided on the Vivofit for three primary reasons:* (a) 1 year battery life (Really the…

Thanks for having the stones to put this out here. I'm sure the ersatz experts will attack, but I enjoyed reading it, and because it appears you've been personally successful with your advice, well, I tend to listen to people who walk the talk. One question regarding protein powder. I have not used them and don't really…

Now when I sync on the Garmin site, it adds a general "Aerobics" activity in my MFP exercise log, but the calories aren't right. But at least they're talking.

Social badge. That's interesting because nearly everyone in my office asked me about the Vivofit on my wrist today (as it's the first day I've worn it). I've even proposed a holiday contest - $20 buy in and most steps by the end of the year wins the pot. (All to be verified by appropriate website (Garmin Connect, Fitbit,…

I think two hours is great. About 6 months ago, I switched from running to walking, and I've never felt better. No more Achilles tendinitis, no more plantar fasciitis, no more runner's knee, no more gorging on carbs an hour after my run. My family has built a habit of a 40 minute walk around the golf course right after…

Aaahgh. Should have waited a day to buy this sucker. Now it's only $69 online. Happens to me everytime!

Thank you, ntnunk. Followed your steps, and now their is a "Add Food on MyFitnessPal" option in the gear context menu on Garmin Connect, so I'm assuming the connection between the two sites has been made. I'll just wait till the programmers get it figured out. Thanks so much for your help. I'm really looking forward to…

Alright! I ran to the store and bought a new Vivofit based on all these great reviews. (Saw the Vivosmart, too, and thought about it for a second. Looks pretty sexy for a pedometer. But I'm with my brother ntnunk - having to recharge every couple of days is a joy killer!). I've managed to sync it to Garmin Express and pair…

Wow, pretty compelling case to go with one. Okay, I've changed my mind. A little Vivofit jewelry might be nice. I truly am a lemming, but maybe in this case it will do me some good. Now, should I get the heart rate monitor, too? I've got a hairy chest and I'm not too keen on having them yanked out while I run. The running…

Hmmm. I have a strong suspicion that I would feel just like you do. I think I'll take the $75 and buy a gym membership instead. Thanks for the advice.

Uh..not sure if you're trying to help me or embarrass me, but it's safe to say I will not be posting videos of me squatting. As far as the weight and reps, you can choose to believe me or not, it's up to you. I do indeed use a machine when squatting, but not a Smith machine. My Y calls it a 3D Jones Machine, and I use it…

So based on all of the helpful suggestions here, I’m definitely changing my squat routine and will be upping the frequency to twice a week. But I think what may be more interesting for me is to experiment with the huge protein uptake that everyone is advising. Today was day one, and I’m at 115g of protein after my…

Changing frequency and splitting my routines should be easy enough to test and will probably have a beneficial, and at worst, a benign effect on my body. But as you say, the protein increase seems a more interesting experiment. Read a wealth of information thanks to Sarauk2sf's profile (she is certainly an advocate, along…

Holy cow. One logs back in to find a dissertation in progress! After skimming through all of the excellent suggestions, I think the histogram would show that my volume is too high, my weight is too heavy, and my frequency is too low. Also, it appears that deadlifts and squats on the same day could definitely be…
-
Wow, great advice from this community, thanks all. My squats currently consist of 4 sets of 10 reps at 225,275,315,335. These are followed by deadlifts, lunges, and straight legged deadlifts. I'm 6', 185 lbs, and 44 years old, so I'm inclined to think that Sunofabeach is spot on about highlighting my age. Six months ago,…

Spend that day focusing completely on someone that you care about. That will make both of you feel good - guilt free.
-
Totally agree with mr. mustgetmuscle here. Thanks for the website ... great targets!

Personally, I found bodyweight exercises more difficult than weightlifting, and with much slower manifestation of visible change. Difficult because you have to crank out a lot more reps to feel like you're progressing. More reps translated to more time and more extended pain for me. It was pychologically much easier to do…

Thanks Gents. I just googled Wender 5/3/1. I'll give that a shot.

Slurped these babies at mile 10 during a half, and finished the last 3 miles in personal record 21 minutes. Not sure if that cheating or psychosomatic, but they worked for me.
-
I've used both RunKeeper and Nike+, but ended up consistently using MapMyRun. Most of these trackers record a number of GPS points over a specific period of time (say 10 points per minute). It then averages these points to get your rate/speed/pace. This pace is then factored with your height and weight and (usually) a…

I've been debilitated by bursitis in the past, too, and it's definitely not any fun. Best thing that worked for me after I was affected was to just rest....instead of jogging, I lifted weights and ate sensibly for 4 weeks. For prevention, I think the best thing to do is to lose some weight via walking and eating properly…
