I have a problem with my liver function. General consensus from my endo and my PCP are this: my poorly functioning liver is a result of poorly controlled diabetes, poorly controlled thyroid condition, and being obese. So here is what I'm doing to "detox" my liver: I'm controlling my diabetes, we've increased my thyroid…

Yes, I have had success. I was put on 50,000 IU weekly for about 6 months until I was at the very bottom of the "typical" range. I took mine weekly, not daily but mine was D3. I still have to get tested because I still have issues. It seems to be an ongoing thing and I hope that weight loss will help.

If you have the flu you are most likely not capable of exercising. The flu usually comes with fever, aches, and significant URI symptoms. You need rest. If I have a cold or something I still workout, but I hit the streets for a walk/run rather than hitting the gym.

You can calculate by percentage of body weight lost instead of just pounds lost to make account for the differences in your weight.

I guess it depends on what your normal activity level is. I wouldn't log it as actual exercise, personally. Unless it was a walk where you kept your heart rate up and sustained it. That would be different.
-
I currently have a Fitbit Flex and put a Fitbit Charge HR on my wishlist for Christmas ;) The Flex is too basic and I want the heart rate measure and added features of the Charge HR. Overall I'm a very happy Fitbit customer. I like the sync system and the dashboard system for looking at my stats.

And this is where YMMV comes in. I said that it "can be a gross overestimation" and suggested that if the poster was meticulously weighing her food, not eating back all exercise calories could be helpful. I know that my walks are really overestimated by Map My Walk, and MFP really overestimates my calorie burn for…

Coffee! I also got an Egg McMuffin this morning because I know I won't be eating lunch until pretty late today! Oh, and no Canadian bacon. I just don't like how it smells. For some reason an Egg McMuffin (or even making the same darn thing at home) keeps me satisfied for hours and hours.

I'm in the US. I get my vitamin D levels checked regularly. Here's the scoop: About 3 years about I was having terrible bone and joint pain. I was sent to a rheumatologist who took 8 vials of blood to test everything under the sun (ok, not quite, but it felt that way). One of the tests was to look at my vitamin D level, a…

If you are eating back your exercise calories, please know that the calories burned you are given by MFP can be a gross overestimation. I would go back to meticulous weighing of everything you eat with a digital food scale and make sure that your activity level and stats (height, weight, age) are set correctly in MFP to…

It depends. If I have a mild cold I won't go to the gym out of courtesy for others but I will do some walking around my neighborhood. Getting some activity in usually helps me to feel better, and the cool air during the fall and winter helps my breathing. If I have a pretty significant cold or anything beyond a cold I stay…

Depending on your income, please see if you qualify for any assistance from the government. If you can qualify for WIC it could really increase your food budget. Otherwise, there are a ton of good suggestions here. Produce this time of the year is getting expensive here (I'm in PA and we've already had two good frosts and…

I just have to stay busy. It helps me to think about other things, especially during that late afternoon time.

My husband was on Januvia and had gastrointestinal side effects but he doesn't have any side effects with Metformin. I'm on Metformin and it took almost 8 weeks for the gastrointestinal side effects to go away. They are finally gone!

Agreed. We all have different priorities based upon our individual circumstances. That's what makes life so fun!
-
I get both sides here. I do think that sometimes the phrase "I don't have the time" really means "I could make time but this isn't high enough on my priority list". And that's ok. There isn't a thing in the world wrong with having priorities that aren't exercise. I do think that there are people who could juggle things…

Unfortunately there are snobs on both sides.

I go to the gym and have two kids. I work full time and my husband works full time and goes to graduate school. I still manage to fit it in although not as often as I would like. Some nights I can't actually make it to the gym (like tonight because I'll be alone with the kiddos until well after they are in bed) so I'll…

I like mine with romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, egg, and red wine vinegar. Sometimes I'll replace either the egg or the cheese with leftover meat from dinner throughout the week. Sometimes I like some croutons. Sometimes I like onion or green peppers. I find that mixing it up is fun.
-
When I tell people that I go to the gym I usually get a "that's great" or they ask me what specifically I do when I'm there. I've only ever had positive reactions.

I had an awful gastro virus two years ago that was similar to this and it took my body months to recover and be normal again in that department. It was horrid.

A 100 calorie bag of pretzels. There was a student throwing desks around his classroom during my lunch so I had to tend to that instead of eat today. Oh well...guess I'll be having a lot of dinner!
-
On salads I go for just red wine vinegar with no oil because I like it that way! Do you like soups? I make beef barley and it's very hearty and filling and a serving is only around 330 calories. It's a great lunch.

My cholesterol was a tiny bit elevated with my last lab work. Since that time I've lost about 40 lbs and started exercising regularly. As of right now I'm not doing anything with my diet. I go for updated labs very soon and I'm hopeful that the weight loss and exercise improves my cholesterol. I can't take a statin because…

Pick a WOE that you can stick with. I do have medical concerns so I have to lower carbs. Because of that I increase my fat intake. Personally, I'd rather skip some potatoes or eat less rice than eat lower fat cheeses. That's just me! Honestly...if I wasn't Type II I wouldn't limit carbs at all. I still eat a fair amount of…

That's great for you, but again, we must consider various factors when looking at how resilient people tend to be. Those who have extensive support networks, access to healthy food, and opportunities to learn about weight control will have a higher chance of being able to "overcome" (I don't like the usage of this word in…

Exactly.

Congrats!

It's not the same texture of white rice--brown rice has a texture more similar to quinoa and barley. It shouldn't be crunchy or tough if you are cooking it long enough. It is a bit chewier. To me, brown rice is sort of like al dente pasta. That might be why I like it so much.

Is eating at the same time every day a must? I'm a school psychologist and will often have to alter my schedule. If I'm in the middle of a crisis or restraining a kid, doing a suicide assessment, etc I can't just stop and eat. Hopefully the schedule thing isn't an absolute. I can't imagine being able to do that with my job!
