  • that happens to me too. Exercise gives you those extra calories to eat but then sometimes I feel even more hungry if I exercise enough to be getting sweaty...so I'm trying to figure out the balance of intensity and appetite. I'm experimenting with eating something fatty like a half avocado right before I workout and then a…
  • A lot of good advice in this thread :) OP--try kettlebells! It will help you feel strong and confident. They're pretty popular so if you google around you might find a class, or look for videos on youtube and most gyms have them. You do need to be cautious with swings and proper form so you don't hurt yourself. Start at a…
  • I found this awesome video on Self magazine's website and wanted to put it here. It's a group of women who lost a significant amount of weight discussing exactly what we were all talking about in this thread: http://www.shape.com/weight-loss/success-stories/how-your-brain-adjusts-weight-loss
  • I also don't support negative self-talk, fat-shaming or the excessive value many societies place on a specific color skin, body size, weight, body type, gender, etc. I know appearances matter but they shouldn't divide us or cause people to feel shame about themselves or hatred and judgment for someone else.
  • Do you know why you're doing this? look at that honestly and if you can't face it alone then reach out to someone you trust and respect. <3
  • 1. I eat a big breakfast that includes veggies, complex carbs and protein 2. I weigh and measure almost all of my food (not lettuce and garlic, lol) 3. I exercise regularly and do something I enjoy like kettlebell classes or walking 4. I just keep going and try to find new ways to make food healthier and more delicious 5.…
  • It depends on the restaurant but if you avoid fried things, Chinese food can be not too bad for you. Steamed veggie or shrimp dumplings, hot and sour soup, a veggie stir fry with chicken or shrimp, brown rice. I'd think the hidden sugar in a lot of chinese-american style dishes would be what gets you in trouble, but a…
  • I eat applegate farms turkey hot dogs. No buns, but I dip them in mustard. They're only like 50 calories each or something. I can eat 3 at a time if I'm hungry. They're a bit high in sodium but not too bad, imo.
  • I weigh hand-sliced bread slices. It's not 100% accurate but it's better than guessing for sure.
  • Have you considered joining a CSA? I just did for the first time and for about $50/week I'm going to be getting fruit, veggies, 18 eggs a week and a bottle of keffir. If it ends up being good, it will be a considerable savings for us. I'm nervous but also excited.
  • Great thread!! Thanks for posting it. I get depressed by all the negative body talk and fat-shame on MFP. I'm getting psyched to see I have shoulder definition and I can do squats for days now. Squats used to terrify me because my balance was so bad and I was weak. Those days are over :)
  • Double post. Glitch in the matrix.
  • 1850 and I eat back most of my exercise calories. I'm pretty stocky with wide shoulders and 5 foot 2. Losing about 2 pounds a month, give or take. I absolutely hate being hungry so trying to lose faster or eat less just isn't gonna cut it for me.
  • that can be super frustrating! Maybe adjust your food intake a bit or just admit you need a break from the calorie restriction that is needed for consistent weight loss. I try to look at "not gaining" as another form of success so I don't just give up and stop tracking and exercising. I will eat at or around maintenance…
  • I had this experience recently looking at a picture of myself from High School. I was cute and my weight was totally fine but my mother was always telling me I was too fat and trying to control my eating--no wonder I packed on 100 pounds since then and refused to honestly look at how I related to food. I'm glad that I can…
  • I don't think I am as addicted to cigarettes as many people seem to be. We all have different neurochemistry and while I smoked for many years, it was never very much at one time. I am able to smoke a cigarette every month or so and not pick it back up as a regular habit, etc. If I go out drinking with friends and have…
  • do you mean more calories or just larger volumes/amounts of food?
  • does your gym have classes? I love to exercise but I'm so lazy about actually doing it so I pre-pay for 3x classes a week and get the rest in by walking far instead of taking the bus. The pre-paying thing is what gets me there.
  • yeah, I think calm down. I understand the fear of gaining weight but turn that fear from a weakness into a strength by facing it! You are strong, you KNOW how to manage your weight. There's no more on or off the wagon, there's only being a grown up adult with the power and knowledge to manage your weight in a healthy way,…
  • I know you can do it! I feel proud of what you've already accomplished:) because it's hard.
  • What about letting go of negative emotions regarding fat? Consciously, willfully work to accept that fat is not inherently bad, ugly or disgusting? That doesn't mean don't strive to eat in a healthy, balanced way and exercise or meet your health and fitness goals, but it might be ultimately more productive to move past a…
  • half of a mashed ripe avocado on toasted health bread. I like THIS brand but it's very dense and hearty, almost like a cracker once you toast it and not everyone likes it. I eat health bread with mashed avocado, a pile of tomatoes and cucumbers drizzled with olive oil and 2 hard-boiled eggs almost every day. I sprinkle sea…
  • This is a good thread on the kitchn, with a lot of interesting suggestions. http://www.thekitchn.com/best-food-blogs-for-novice-cooks-good-questions-189898
  • can you take a cooking class? Or look on youtube! I learned to cook from watching cooking shows on PBS and then the food network, back when it wasn't just celebrity chefs and fatty indulgence foods. Maybe do some digging around youtube for simple beginners cooking channels? I still look on youtube if I am trying to figure…
  • I only weigh myself at the trainer and my schedule is super weird this month. Got on the scale yesterday, probably won't make it back there until 4/17.
  • Kettlebells are awesome but you do need to have good form. Key is engaging your core and glutes and be conscious not to overextend your arms when you do swings.
  • I'm away from the scale this week, be back after the holiday:)
  • Do you live somewhere with chinese or Indian supermarkets? Those places can have incredible deals on produce, beans and grains, etc.
  • I love barley! Have you tried freekeh? It's another whole grain type thing. I boil it, drain, then toss it with sautéed onions and fresh herbs for a side dish. Leftovers are awesome to take for lunch, add some veggies and feta. Whole grains are so versatile.
