  • Honestly? It gets easier the further you get into maintenance...I once couldn't order a small hot chocolate because I was freaking out so much about the unknown calorie content! Realistically, you're not going to go 3500 calories over maintenance in one day, and even so, what's a pound going to do? Eat what you really,…
  • I lost 55lbs keeping a rough estimate and never weighing a thing, and I'm now maintaining in the same way (logging obsessively wasn't good for me!) I'm pretty good at eye-balling, and I don't delude myself (e.g. a big piece of cake is going to be 300+ calories) Some people find that they have to be more specific. If I…
  • My university is part of the Greenspace movement, so they get pretty excited about things like recycling, Fairtrade, timing how long you shower for etc. :) And thank you! I wish people wouldn't argue about stuff like this. If you eat meat? Smashing. Don't? Good for you! I was really going more for the "Am I going about…
  • Hey now, let's not start the big vegans VS. veggies VS. omnivores fight! Everyone is more than welcome to eat what they like! I personally don't feel like I'm getting what my body needs being vegetarian. I hit my protein goals, get enough iron, plenty of fat etc. but there's something I'm not getting. If meat once or twice…
  • Funny, I've always classed my self as the kind of vegetarian who isn't self-righteous; sorry if I came across that way (and I always buy Fairtrade products when I can...) Farmers markets aren't a choice I have when I'm at college, I'm afraid, but the produce in the dining hall is all organic etc. (and Fairtrade. Just…
  • I do this thing where I mix cottage cheese, cereal (usually rice krispies or Weetabix) blueberries and honey all together. Apparently, this is weird, but it is one of my favourite foods! I also once dropped a banana in some tomato soup and it was delicious. 10/10 would recommend.
  • Tofu is one of my favourite foods, so I use it a lot...I'll try not to ramble but these are my favourite ways to cook it: *Press it, cut into chunky strips, spray it with cooking spray, roll it in seasoning and then bake on greaseproof paper at 200C for about 30 minutes until it's golden and crispy. I just use salt and…
  • Hi, can't offer much help since I'm about to go to college on meal plan myself (the food is pretty healthy looking though, which is a plus!) but I'm interested to see what people say :) I'm joining the gym and a few sports societies anyway-- I'd definitely make the most of a free YMCA!
  • Thanks :) I have issues when it comes to getting enough protein, so I'll definitely try and up my intake
  • *waves* Feel free to add me :D (Huge book-worm, and a big fan of Marvel, DC, Sherlock and Doctor Who among other things of that nature :D) (Nerd Fitness is also a good website if no ones mentioned it yet)
  • Could you increase the caloric value of what you eat? That way you wouldn't feel too overwhelmed or technically be eating MORE, but you'd be increasing your intake? E.g. Full fat dairy, peanut butter on toast etc. It might be easier to drink calories too...? A banana smoothie made with yogurt, peanut butter and milk can…
  • I still use some supplements (I was anemic so I like getting into the 90-100% range) but I track iron and my diary is open so you can have a look if you like :) Also, certain things can inhibit the absorption of iron (dairy products for example) whereas foods high in vitamin C help :) That's what my doctor told me, and my…
  • I bought a bag of quinoa the other day (teeny little thing that set me back £1) that has 10 servings in! You can bulk buy oats and rice/pasta which won't spoil and are quick and that can be jazzed up with lean meat, veggies etc. Other than that, local markets are good for fruit and veg (at my local one you can haggle a…
  • I had the exact same issue (except I was a sedentary 16year old and 175lbs.) I went through a phase of guilt for eating ANYTHING-- lettuce, veggies the lot! I jumped for joy when I added up my calories one day and hit 758! However, I was also sad, tired, anemic and had a really low immune system. You could try…
  • I'm on 1800 (working towards 2000ish) and lift dumbbells (NOT the 3lb kind!) at home, but will hopefully have access to free weights in the future! Add me if you like :)
  • Thanks for all the advice :) I think I'd been low cal for way too long and gotten into some weird habits  Just went ahead and bought some calipers so my measurements are more consistent (yes, I know these aren't 100% accurate, but they're better than tape measures, even if I am rather obsessive about accuracy of…
  • A) Dumbbells, a pull up bar, and random household objects in place of things I don't have (e.g. a bit of wood propped up to serve as a bench, chairs used for dips etc.) B) Nope... C) 4-6KG per arm, 8KG on a good day, so about 16KG altogether (I try and lift as heavy as I can, but dumbbells are expensive! £36 for the 10KG…
  • I'm not being funny, but if you were sick recently, take it easy. I got really sick a while back and had an entire week off exercising to recover. Your body needs to rest; by exercising (especially intensely) you'll probably stall the recovery process!
  • I used several different calculators, most of which used tape measures, some more accurate than others. I know it's difficult to get an accurate reading; last time I used them, it came out as 22%...even if the reading wasn't accurate, the drop is kind of scary  Thanks for the advice, though! I tried avocado the other…
  • I always have whisky and diet coke--65 calories per shot and plentiful in terms of alcohol %:drinker:
  • Heading to university in September (I hope! D:) I'm trying to maintain my weight and avoid the Freshers 15. Feel free to add me! :D
  • Depends on how fast you go! I'm 121lbs, and have an (annoyingly expensive) pedometer which takes into account speed, stride, incline etc. (i.e. it knows when I'm going up one of the enormous hills around where I live!) If I go 4.5mph - 5mph, I burn 220+ in about 45 minutes; today, I went 3 mph for 90 for the a similar…
  • As someone who uses walking as cardio, yes, it is. However, I only count it if I'm going fast enough to work up a sweat etc. I have a scarily accurate pedometer; at my fastest (4.5-5mph) I can easily burn up to 300 calories a walk...:drinker:
  • I was on 1200 and (stupidly) not eating back calories burned. Since I hit my goal of 126lbs in January I've been adding 50-100 per week/every few weeks and increasing if I maintain. Since I started doing this, I actually dropped to 121lbs and have been maintaining that on 1640 (which I plan to increase next week!) :) it…
