I usually go with something like a boiled egg or a bit of yogurt. If I'm in the mood for fruit, a banana does the trick too. After that...water water water.

Because you burn when you exercise. That 1200 number is the general amount you would burn just in your daily activity without exercise added in. Avoiding the 1200 vs 2200 or whatever debate, when you burn too much without replacing it, your body suffers and you lose less fat + more muscle in the process.

A tip to make it funner, there are always interesting fruits at the grocery store where I live. If it's the same for you, don't be afraid to try them when you get the chance. I think it's pretty much the same as thinking 'oh, I ate a cookie. But only 1. Another couldn't help. Well, that's just 2....how on earth did I eat the whole box?' Little steps in one direction never seem to make a difference, it's once you've gotten there that you really begin to notice.

I think a deficit is a deficit. 100-500, whatever, you're still burning them. I do think a 1000 cal deficit is a bit extreme, though.
