  • Yes. But is sounds so much cooler if you call if a runner's belt. :) Seriously, Nathan, Amphipod, and several other companies make great belts that can hold everything you need and don't bounce.
  • A run without coffee just wouldn't be a run for me. I'm reading the "New Rules of Marathon and Half Marathon Nutrition" by Matt Fitzgerald right now. There's a fair amount on caffeine use. He suggests a caffeine "fast" of up to two weeks before a race to get the max benefit during a race and taking caffeine pills (ie.…
  • fruit - it smells like rot to me. Makes me gag to even think about it. maggots
  • I would either 1) enjoy your spring and summer and do some more 10K races and go for some new PRs until you start your half marathon training schedule, or 2) find a half marathon that is sooner and start training for it now. No reason you can't do two this year! Good luck on your half!
  • My first marathon was the Seattle Rock n' Roll last year. I think that the high entry fee is absolutely justified. Rock n' Roll events are huge and very well organized. The expo was enormous, there were bands every mile, the medals and shirts were awesome, and there were plenty of aid stations and restrooms. Traffic…
  • I have just not taken shirts a couple times. I know I paid for it in the registration fee, sometimes if it's ugly, I just don't want it. I save all my bibs as those mean more to me than most of my shirts. I like it when they give you the option to purchase the shirts.
  • This made me cry when I heard about it. Last year while about half a mile away from the finish line in my marathon, there was a guy sitting on the sidewalk crying. It was obvious he'd given up. Two guys ahead of me stopped, sat down with him, and hugged him. I watched all three of them finish the race just behind me.…
  • The guy who sits next to me talks on his phone so loud that I cannot hear a conversation if I am on my phone. If he's on the phone and mine rings, I don't even answer it. If I have to make a call, I generally take my phone to the supply room. He also: chews with his mouth open makes that "t-ahhhh" noise after he drinks…
  • I'm slow, so a win isn't likely on the horizon for me. And, I don't know if I could beat my half marathon PR again. I'm just happy to improve my times. At the moment, races are more about fun for me than competition.
  • Oh man, where it that George Costanza gif when I need it?!
  • I think straight-up ethanol might be your only non-water option. But that isn't so good for you either and it isn't calorie free. Good luck in your search.
  • I'm kind of in a similar situation to you. I'm running halfs whenever I feel like it and putting in about 20 to 25 miles per week right now. I start training for my second marathon (Chicago) in a few weeks. You have "only" one year of running under your belt and are going straight from your first half to your first…
  • Feel free to add me. I just signed up for my second marathon today (Chicago), but I have a LOT of training to do to get ready!
  • My run club also puts them on map my run. I'm new to the club and I don't know all the routes yet and many of the streets change names multiple times, so opening the map on my phone and trying to read it can be hard. I'd love an app that just says "turn left on 43rd St in 200 yards" if one exists.
  • I use Runmeter. I've used it for a long time and really like it, but I think there are a lot of others that might have more features. Along with OP's question, does anyone know if there is a running app that gives directions? My running club has crazy routes and I always get lost. I'd love to program something in and be…
  • I lose weight very easily on 1600 calories per day and 15 to 25 miles per week when training for half marathons. Like others mentioned, I also experienced weight gain when I upped my mileage and trained for a marathon.
  • It's my meditation. Ask me to sit still with my legs crossed and fingers shaped like "o"s and my mind is anything but quiet. Send me down the road in my running shoes and I am peaceful and centered.
  • When the nail comes off, there should already be significant growth of then new nail underneath. You can work out with a partial or missing toenail and it shouldn't cause any pain. (Actually, you'll probably have less pain when it finally comes off.) I run with missing toenails all the time. Sometimes when I am running far…
  • I don't think I've had 10 fully intact toenails in the last two years because of running. Both of my second toenails are black right now with about 30 miles per week of running. I have good properly-fitted shoes, good socks, etc. It seems to only happen when I am increasing my mileage. I pretty much ignore them now.
  • During my first interview out of college, the interviewer kept picking her nose with a hairpin and wiping it on a tissue right in front of me. A year later, I interviewed for another company and was told that they wanted to hire me, but they were afraid that since I was a female, I'd be offended my the rough language used…
  • I gained weight after having kids. I yo-yo'ed up and down 30 pounds for several years and never got close to losing all that I needed to lose. Then, five years ago, I got a 30-day free membership to YMCA as part of my kids' summer camp program. My kids wanted to go there and swim a lot, so I started doing the elliptical…
  • In for responses because I was just about to ask about the Garmin also. I bought someone one of these as a Christmas gift for someone and they love it. I'd think that the HRM is a personal decision depending on if you like to train with one or not. I know that you can use it without the HRM if you want. Adding to OP's…
  • I'm a huge fan of 10-milers for trail runs. We have a few around here. It seems like I'm barely warmed up by the time I do a 5-miler and I'm near death by the time I do a half marathon. For road runs, I wish there were more 15Ks.
  • Just dump your wife. She clearly has control issues. It's not you, you're doing just fine.
  • Omg! I thought so, too. Now I can't get Peter Griffin's voice out of my head.
  • I'm not going to comment on the relationship aspect of the post. The "excuses" you have for not losing weight are just that: excuses. Working full-time, commuting, keeping house, paying the bills, taking care of kids -- you are probably talking to most people on MFP. And keeping the weight for spite? Really? It truly…
  • I entered age, height, gender, and fitness level. Based on replies, I think I'll use it a few more days and if I can get consistent readings just use it for tracking trends.
  • It's very normal to freak out. You can do it though! You have plenty of time to train. Watch "Spirit of the Marathon" - that will inspire you for sure. It shows the journey of a couple first-time marathoners.
  • Thanks, Rindy12. I tried it and I'M IN!!! I'd still be waiting for the email without your help.
