On the topic of intervals I found them incredibly beneficial in the shorter races, 5k & 10k, and more of a way to break up the monotony of crushing 55-70 miles a week during marathon training. The longer the race, half & full marathons, it's more about tempo miles in my opinion. I'm not sure 12x400 intevals would get the…

There is nothing wrong with pushing yourself, just sometimes it takes more time than what you are allowing to get to the point to successfully be able to navigate such a race. Also you might consider more calories for the run. My buddies generally do 200-240 calories an hour, and you're probably looking at 8ish hours plus…

You know I'm not the kinda of guy who will always tell you want you want to hear, but what you probably need to hear. Be careful with the 100k thing. I've got several friends who do them, and they are brutal with a large percentage of DNF's. Most would not pick a 100k event until they have a very solid track record of…

I think it was by far the best plan i used for my 3 marathons. I used a couple of higdon's plans to start and i don't think they had me anywhere near prepared. Sure I did a couple of 20 mile long runs but the midweek middle distance stuff was useless. The Pfitz 18/70 plan with the 15+ 12-15 mile middle distance runs had me…

I've always ran in the same brand/style of shoe. It was hard to find something that i liked and felt comfortable in so once i found it i bought a bunch of them. I may have 2-3 pair I run in at the same time but i've killed about 14 pair of Adidas Sequence Boost in the past 3 years. They are good for about 400-500 miles. I…

I kinda live on the outskirts of town in a new housing development. Every morning I get out before sunrise you can hear them in some of the grass fields just to the east of us. Like you, I only see them every now and again but they always startle me when they dart out between the tree lines.

I got my LTHR from a blood sample during a treadmill session with my trainer. Zone: 2: HR -120-139 Zone: 3 HR - 140-169 Zone: 4 HR -170-174. LT HR: 172 Zone: 5 HR - 175+ My trainer sets up zones a bit different, and wants my easy/recovery runs to stay much lower than your top end z2. Most of my aerobic runs I like to keep…

Adding a interval session in once every 7-10 days would be a good start. I know several guys who strictly run 5-10k races and they run long run upto 10-12 miles. You need a combination of both speed and distance to get the full benefit of either. The typical rule of thumb is 80/20. 80% of your runs should be easy…

August Goal - 120 Miles 8/1/17 - 4.02 Easy I will be doing all of my base building miles in z2/z3 avoiding any threshold / vo2max stuff until i get back to 40+ miles a week and lose a few more lbs. I may add in some cadence drills but getting back to logging more time on my feet is needed. Today was cool, raining and dark…

I'm back, sorta. Coming off letting my body rest for the month of December, I fell off the wagon and focused on other things, like eating and watching TV. I've managed a few runs here and there and managed a very impressive 49 miles the past 2 months, 25 coming last week when I decided i didn't like how my pants fit any…

You should probably make sure your gym's treadmill will allow use that long. Most of ours are set for a 60 minute limit then they shut off. It's a real PITA to stop, wait for it to reset then start again. Fortunately my gym has a 6 lap/mile indoor track, which is just a step up over a treadmill.

@kristinegift Sorry to see your race result, I know how hard it is to put in those types of miles getting ready for a marathon and not get to perform and finish like you had trained. Having dealt with the every step quad / calf alternating crampfest in a marathon before it's a type of brutal pain that makes most quit. The…

Been a week or so since posting. Went to my trainer last week after some issues that have kept creeping back up with my hips and just tightness all over in my legs. Some mild Achilles tendonitis has returned as well. He had me do some stretches and exercises that he keeps logs on and my range of motion was way off. I had…

I've ran as much as 19 miles on an indoor track. I don't think there is much risk of injury with all the turns. Every track session I've done outdoors they have run counterclockwise . MY indoor track alternates directions by days. IF the track isn't too busy and you're worried about it pick an outer ring and alternate…

I'm the same way, if someone tells me i shouldn't do something, i'll do it just to say I could. I ran a half marathon against my dr's advise 5 months after having a rod put in my leg to hold it together, I totally get it. I guess my point was to not obsess with the total number of weekly miles, but to make sure you are…

@MNLittleFinn My guess is your first marathon will be a gong show late in the race. I'm not saying that to be mean but from my first experience, and the experience of close friends, the first one is going to give you problems and will really test you from miles 21-25. The last mile wasn't as bad for me because I knew the…

@RespectTheKitty I struggle with lack of desire to run when I don't have a goal race on the schedule. Right now I don't have a problem running during the week but the weekends are a struggle. I'd rather relax, but to a degree thats been earned for the 8+ months I did getting ready for my goal race. I think taking a break…
