  • @yirara You are so right. I was gone for two weeks. I did eat a lot on some days, but on others I found that I got full very quickly and just couldn’t eat much. In fact, I organized a get-together with a bunch of friends and we ordered from my favourite Indonesian restaurant, and I barely touched the food because I’d had a…
  • @KerryBSoCal, thanks so much for the offer. I would really like to talk to someone with a similar experience about this; is there a way for us to communicate privately if you’re amenable? Alternatively, I was thinking of starting a new thread about it; there are a few here but not a whole lot of discussion. I’m definitely…
  • Thanks for the positive feedback! It’s definitely what I need to hear. I just ate a normal meal ( wasn’t hungry today till dinner time), and tomorrow I’ll get back on track with exercise. @mpwalker9791 We were in Chicago at the same time! I went for the weekend to see family and then to Wisconsin to see friends. So sorry…
  • I struggle with this too - what I “should” do versus what I actually do, which is usually nothing - and I’m certain there’s at least an element of feeling unworthy somewhere in there; in other words, do we think we’re worth taking care of? Beyond that, I agree with the above poster. There’s a lot of great advice and info…
  • Definitely a problem. I got a new scale since the old one was garbage and unreadable, but my bathroom floor tiles have a wavy texture so I too was getting different readings for every location. Now I have a 12”x12” piece of flat wood under it and think it’s more or less accurate, but still a bit iffy. Bathroom floor is the…
  • You're welcome! (If you're in the States, they do deliver.) His "feud" with Jon Stewart is pretty hilarious.
  • From your post, it seems you have already lost 15 pounds. How long did that take, and how long have you been stalled? If the stall is for a very short time, the fluctuation you mention might be temporary.
  • To manage dinner from Lou Malnati’s with my relatives when I visit them in Chicago next week without breaking the calorie bank. This might have to involve thin-crust, and there definitely will be pushback against that from my deep-dish-loving fam (to be fair, I also love deep-dish despite my years in NYC). Wish me luck!
  • Very useful post. I especially like your point about trusting the process. One of the most Illuminating aspects of it has been simply the realization that it works - that doing something different (in this case, calorie deficit) actually does produce a different outcome. No-brainer, of course, but I’ve often been in the…
  • You have already gotten excellent explanations, analysis, and advice here, so I can't add to that. Just two thoughts, though. First, "Google" isn't in itself a reliable source. It's a search engine that directs you to various resources, some of which are reliable and some of which or not - so I would advise paying close…
  • @AnnPT77 Thanks for those excellent suggestions. My go-tos are Headspace and Jon Kabat-Zinn’s body scan, but I’m glad to add to the repertoire. Last night wasn’t too bad, probably because I went to bed pretty early instead of doing my usual night-owl routine.
  • Not yet, but waiting on tenterhooks for the final series of BBC Ghosts to arrive in Canada.
  • It’s funny; I’m a serious dessert person but have never been able to tolerate sweetener in coffee; tastes sickly sweet to me. Still miss NYC, where I discovered the joys of cappuccino at little Italian pastry shops (or anywhere, really) and then cafe con leche in my heavily Dominican neighbourhood. Ahhh.
  • @yirara please tell us the other three cookbooks you got are better than this?
  • This made me laugh and reminded me of a funny, recurring line from a character in the BBC show Ghosts (brilliant if you can get access to it, superior to the subsequent US version, in my opinion). He’s the ghost of a World War II army captain, and occasionally when someone else is a naysayer, he retorts, “We didn’t win the…
  • Gorgeous flowers, @AnnPT77. Maybe I’ll post some of mine, though I’ve been quite lazy in the garden. I’m taking the feedback from another thread about possibly thinning hair to heart and upping my protein, so I’m feeling fuller and generally better. I’m struggling with exercise, though. I’m not super-active but usually…
  • Erm . . . is there any discussion of anyone’s height, weight, sex, age, goal weight, etc.? Also, 2-3 lbs. a week? Healthy? Sustainable? I tend to get turned off immediately by anything with a cutesy name. This one has numbers, but I once took a mindfulness-based stress reduction class with a simpering instructor who had an…
  • Well, I just ran errands in my neighbourhood, and it was exhausting, probably due to lack of sleep and a missed medication dose last night. So obviously that’s not the NSV. But I stopped in at the local patisserie and got a sort of phyllo topped with tomato, basil, etc., thing, took a small bite, and went on my way (it’s…
  • Great advice here. I’m struck by the OP’s comment about being unable to stop thinking about meals, calories, rewards, etc. when on track. I realize we’re all different, but as someone who has always been a mindless eater, I have found that planning what to eat ahead of time actually stops me from obsessing about and…
  • I’m old enough to remember those fancy instant (shudder) “international coffees” - late 1970s, from Maxwell House, maybe? One of my college roommates introduced us to them, and oh, my! We thought we were so sophisticated. She went on to start a very popular real coffee shop chain in a major US city; wish we had stayed in…
  • That sounds about right. The Italian immigrants who migrated to my part of southern Ontario in the 1960s came from the South, and many left because of postwar poverty. My ex-landlord, when I was renting, described visiting his peasant relatives there and the amazing food, as you have. One of my neighbours still grows…
  • @snowflake954, I just posted above some of the "Mediterranean diet" material. Somewhere else, I saw a discussion saying this originated with some guy in the 1950s observing eating patterns of people in southern Italy, but now I can't seem to find it.
  • As promised, here are some links/citations for resources that aren't password-protected from the first session of the class: Week 1 Mindless Eating: Brian Wansink, Mindless Eating - Note: I just looked this book up and found this interesting Guardian article:…
  • Chicken Tikka Masala - Got this recipe from the SO. Last time I made it, I doubled the amount of chicken but cut the oil and butter in half. Delicious and freezes well. My calculation for the recipe function with those changes: 5 servings at 330 calories per serving. Marinade 4 skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into…
  • Mine was to to lose another 5 pounds (getting to 170) before going on vacation - but that’s in less than two weeks so unlikely. So now, my mini goals are to dip below 175 and not gain while I’m out of town.
  • I have a few recipes like that, for things like fruit salad, so usually I just go in and edit the existing recipe to reflect the changes, and then log the new version. It’s a simple method, but only if you don’t care about remembering the original version.
  • Sweet potato and chicken curry (with coconut milk) - I never have cardamom pods but substitute ground https://www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/sweet-potato-chicken-curry-recipe
  • Okay, I started it! Will come back tomorrow to type in my other faves. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10900167/favourite-chicken-recipes/p1?new=1
  • I’m finding this same problem with bread (package says one roll = 50 grams, but scale says 70), frozen vegetables, etc. I really struggled the other day to find accurate info for canned kidney beans; the database entries were wildly variable and inaccurate, even for gram weight. I’m mainly relying on my scale now. I…
  • Probably a bowl of Haagen Dazs vanilla Swiss almond ice cream with sliced banana and some melted dark chocolate on top. Actually I could have this, but I’m not yet at the point of trusting myself to have a pint of ice cream in the freezer and not eat the whole thing in a matter of hours. I go back and forth about whether…
