I wanted to make flatbread without yeast but didn't want the butterfat. Lo and behold, there are all sorts of recipes online that just call for flour and Greek yogurt (plus baking powder and salt). Amazing. I've been making an online shrimp Creole recipe that has 2 tsp. of oil. That's it. No other fat. And it's delicious.

Genuine question, not snark: who is “they”? Where are you getting this advice?

Half-fat mayo tastes exactly the same as regular.

A friend got me a bunch of ziploc square and round containers a few years ago when I was postop and needed single-serving meals readily available in my (not very big) freezer. I still use them, but I did get some glass ones after reading people’s storage ideas here. I ordered online, which was probably a mistake, because…

I want to echo the points made about slow weight loss and non-scale victories. I’ve been at this since, I guess, August with an initial goal of losing about 15 pounds. I’m just getting close to that now, though the numbers continue to fluctuate day to day. For example, several weeks ago I dipped down to to 174 and then…

The great thing about the recipe tool also is that you can easily adjust. If I’m making a pile of roasted root vegetables but am using different veggies, I just go in and change the items and amounts and save the new info. It’s also useful for reminding me of tweaks I’ve made to recipes I use, like reducing the butter and…

It is time-consuming to cook! I teach at a university, and once the semester begins, I really struggle with this. I’m trying meal planning for the first time - planned a week’s worth of meals on Saturday, got groceries, cooked on Sunday- and now I have dinner portions of a few different dishes in the freezer for a week.…

There are also foods that can be bad for certain people’s health outcomes, e.g., sugar for people with or at risk for diabetes, grapefruit for people who take any of a whole host of medications (I’m on one of them), etc. So any nutritionist making that claim should make sure they know someone’s medical history thoroughly.…

Oh, yes! I know all about those tiny slivers.

Well, it had loads of calories and I ate it anyway. This morning I had an inexplicable craving for bacon and, more.broadly, a serious breakfast (as opposed to my oatmeal with sliced banana or egg and part-skim cheese on a low-carb tortilla). My excellent neighbourhood diner has a new breakfast sandwich, the “Nirvana,”…

I’m wearing a normal pair of pants over a pair of fleece leggings. They’re perfectly comfortable. Haven’t been able to fit into them for a few years.
-
I dug a pair of pants out of my closet yesterday just to see if I could possibly zip and button them (been living in elastic-waist pants for the past few years). And the answer is . . . dundundun.. . yes! Granted, there’s a giant muffin top/overhang - and I’ve been hovering around the same place on the scale for the past…

Just go into Settings, then Diary Settings, and you’ll find the option to make you diary public, private, or friends-only. No need to upgrade.

It’s a nice ideal but probably a little nostalgic these days, given who actually works these jobs now. There’s some fascinating data here straight from the horse’s mouth (US restaurant industry via US Census. Check out the pages for age and household status.…

You know, there’s this mindfulness-bases stress reduction guy I listen to once in a while, and he makes this point that “right now is the only time you really have.” It always puzzles me a bit, like I know what he’s saying but don’t quite get it. But you just said the same thing in a way that I suddenly, completely…

Unless I’ve got this wrong, translated into US-speak, you are about 5’4”, started out weighing 216 pounds, and now weigh about 130. That is phenomenal progress in 4 years, and you really have very little left to lose. Can you clarify your typical daily or weekly calorie intake from food and calorie expenditure from…

I also went on vacation for two weeks recently and mostly ate out or what others cooked; I actually brought my lightweight kitchen scale and did a grocery run, but never used the scale or ate what I bought. I tried to eat in moderation and, to my astonishment, did not gain weight. Expect to encounter a lot of delicious…

Everything Ann said. Elsewhere I have recommended the YouTube channel SeniorShape with Lauren. She has many options for exercises to do while while seated or lying down. I have a balance problem and often, for her standing or balance videos, hold onto a chair or dresser or wall. Keep in mind that even stretching is…

You’re doing great and sound right on target; congrats! It’s exactly as others say; fluctuations are totally normal. I just went through this; was excited to be at 174, then frustrated to be back above 176 a few days later, but now I’ve hit 173 and am reminded that this is the trend. If you go to Home, you’ll see a…

I hate exercise too, and have some physical limitations that have taken long walks off the table more or less. I’ve been using YouTube videos by SeniorShape with Lauren. She has a ton of videos, including dancing, walking, strength, stretching, yoga, Pilates, etc. Some are just 10 minutes, but many are more like 20-30. She…

Before anyone gets too excited, it’s not an adult toy. :) Here’s a review from someone in Toronto, so the price is in Canadian currency, but, yes, it’s about $16 in the States. It’s only a few bucks more than what you would get just buying the food, presumably to cover the cost of (profiting from the cheap labor that…

Yes, I’ve experienced the “just watch me” approach in a few yoga classes (many years ago; I’ve had various wonderful instructors since) and with one particular aquatic fitness instructor who probably wasn’t used to a new person showing up even though it was a drop-in class. I switched to a different class because I just…

I don’t have any particular insight about this but do want to say that I appreciate the feminist voices present in this discussion and, related to that, consideration of larger context when trying to understand individual behaviour and group dynamics (as opposed to, group X is culturally such-and-such a way). For myself,…

This surprises me! Isn’t it fairly standard, when going on a ski trip or camping or similar, to bring a supply of snacks and other food? It seems like an ideal opportunity to have some control over what you’re eating. Or maybe I’m missing something?
-
Yep. I don’t drive for medical reasons, and public transit is a time consuming hassle. My preference at one time was aquatic fitness classes, but getting to the pool in the next town over is a challenge. There are lots of exercise classes at my town’s rec center, but it’s impossible to get there by bus from my house even…

Tracking food and being at a calorie deficit actually works for losing weight. In this context, you actually can control the outcome - the opposite of the mantra I’ve heard so often.

I have a recipe for a delicious mushroom-asparagus risotto that I can share if you’re interested.

I do have the advantage of living alone, but in line with Ann’s point about extremes, I find it helps to have alternatives to “contraband” on hand that I enjoy so I don’t feel deprived. I love nuts and chocolate, so my go-to daily snack is 10-20 grams of cashews and a half (or sometimes whole) square of Baker’s 70%…
