Hi Mary and welcome to this group. All of us can only start from where we are so don't get stressed out. You asked a question about cals/carbs/sugars; as a diabetic our main focus should be on carbs. The consensus view is that it's best to focus on net carbs which is total carb less fibre. With ref to sugars, since they go…

Hi Kirsten and welcome back on board. There are very few paragons of virtue in this group, so we understand how easy it is to fall off the wagon. Just start from where you are and do what you know works and your lapse will become a distant memory. The great thing about this group is the fact that we do understand because…

Hi Dave and welcome to this group. The good news is that the MFP programme is a great tool for those people trying to control their blood sugars. Just remember that the carb targets set by MFP are a little high for diabetics and need to be adjusted downwards. You know from experience some of the benefits of MFP. Read over…

Positive feedback is always helpful in encouraging group members to contribute because it's only as we share our experiences and frustrations that we realise that we are…

Hi Robin and welcome to this group. One of the frustrating thing about diabetes is that there really is no one size fits all. What works for one person may not work for another. There are also a number of different views which adds to the condusion and frustration. It really is a case of trial and error to find what works…

That's great to hear and a real encouragement to the rest of us. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the input to this discussion. I'm in the UK where the current policy is to supply meters and test strips to Type 1s and those Type 2s who are on insulin. Type 2s not on insulin have to either go without or to buy their meters and strips privately. Strips curently cost around £25 for 50. Diabetes.co.uk are…

Hi Raineylaney, to answer your question specifically. The consensus view amongst diabetics is that we should track net carbs ie total carbs less fibre. While some diabetics do track sugars most do not since sugar is simply glucose and glucose is our enemy. I track Carbs,Protein,Fat, Saturated Fat and Fibre. Dlife .com is a…

Hi and welcome to this group where you will find lots of help and encouragement. I've sent you a friend request.

Hi Pam, your post does not indicate what your daily targets are. Your comment about eating sweets sets off alarm bells because of the sugar content in all confectionary. It's important to realise that the MFP programme is based on a change of lifestyle and is not a diet as such. We all learn bad habits during our lives and…

Ref questions raised by Cherylclark and Bettyeditor, there are a number of different viewpoints, both of which have their merits. There is a plethora of books etc all offering a different viewpoints. This can lead to lots of frustration and confusion. Some people have significant success with a low carb diet ie under 100…

Hi Kimdarren, many of us on this site can empathise with your feeling of confusion and frustration at apparently conflicting information. Previous posters have given some sound information and Travis, as usual makes a number of really good points about Diabetes being a very personal condition which needs lots of trial and…

It's important to understand that the MFP programme, while effective, is not specifically geared for those with Diabetes. Its also important not to get too hung up on numbers. From the info you gave your ratio of carbs to fat and protein seems very high( almost 60%) The consensus view from most diabetics is that a…

Big Guy 47 and Bigg59 have covered this pretty well and I concur with their comments.

Welcome to MFP. There are at least two support groups dedicated to people with Diabetes. You can do a search for these groups where you will find lots of encouragement and support.

While I can appreciate the sensitivity of some of our American friends in this group to 'outside' criticism or even comment, particularly given recent events, it is surely the sign of a healthy society when we are willing to at least take time to reflect on the comments of outside observers. Willingness to accept peer…

Hi Linda, it would depend on the type of cheese. The principle is fine of combining carbs and protein in the ratio of 2:1. In general the harder and more natural the cheese the better.

Very well done, that's a fantastic achievement Cathy and a just reward for all your hard work. You've made a huge contribution to this group and I for one greatly appreciate your input. By the way, who is the young lady in the bottom photograph?

Hi Anna and welcome to this group. You've done really well to achieve the weight loss which you have already achieved. Recovering from a major car accident to the extent that you are now cleared for exercise ,shows great determination which will stand you in good stead. It's important to realise that the MFP programme is…

Hi LinCharpentie, as Laura has already spotted, some countries like the US use mg/dl units to measure blood glucose while others like the UK use mmol/l (the UK is in the process of changing and we have a dual system which is even more confusing) To add to the confusion, many folk in the US and other places test daily while…
