  • Hi Richard and welcome to MFP. The previous posters have said it all really. Grayman makes a number of very valuable points and you would do well to print out his reply and keep it as your personal mantra. The system works as countless people have proven. But it only works if you follow the program to the letter as Grayman…
  • Ok Dan, that's clearly understood.
  • That's great news, well done.
  • I do it by weight the same way as nicsflying circus.
  • Thanks for this piece. I'm aware of Dr Lustigs efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of HFCS. It really is frightening the way in which the thinking of the masses has been conditioned by a media which is in hoc to big business. Unless we are open minded to independent thinkers and take personal responsibility we are…
  • I'm a Type 2 living in the UK and use Bioglan Biotic Balance which has 4 live species Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium Longum, Saccharomyces Boulardii. It has the advantage that it does not need refridgeration. I also try to eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut. For me the downside of…
  • Sorry to hear about your heath insurance situation. I can't remember whether or not you test your own blood glucose. If not, then this is something which you can consider. It would enable you to identify and eliminate problem foods. A number of people in the States have reported good results with blood meters they got from…
  • @1234usmc; Keith has hit the nail spot on. I agree wholeheartedly with his comment.
  • That's a very hard one to answer because cereal and low carb are practically mutually exclusive. The best approach would be to read the label and choose a product with the lowest carb value. As a breakfast food you could possibly choose something like bacon and eggs. Yogurt with something like flaxseed would be another…
  • I've not heard of Drs McDougal and Candwell. Of the other two I tend to follow along the lines suggested by Dr Jason Fung. His attention to controlling insulin as opposed to trying to control blood sugar levels seems logical and his results are very impressive. While I haven't heard of Dr McDougal, the idea of following a…
  • Welcome to the group Texas. Take your time and try to read some of the threads that interest you. When you're ready to ask questions you will find support and encouragement here.
  • I've never had a reading that low but i have had a hypo which was a bit scary, sweating, shaking, nausea etc. I now carry glucose tablets eg dextrose in case of a similar thing happening. For me, chewing 4-6 glucose tablets brought rapid relief. The glucose tablets have the advantage that they give a measured dose of…
  • I can understand your frustration. I agree wholeheartedly with Keith's suggestions which should give you a great start.
  • The group support concept seems to help some people. MFP and particularly LCHF seems much more effective and based on better science, it's also a lot cheaper. The idea of cheat days and points etc seems to be a less effective method. You may like to have a look at The Low Carb Daily Forum - The LCD Group and see what you…
  • Hi Raven, there are two main units of measurements mg/dl which is used in the USA and mmol/l which is used in most other places. As a rule of thumb divide the mg/dl by 18 to convert to mmol/l eg a reading of 125 mg/dl in the USA would be equivalent to 6.9 in most other places. Hope this clarifies things for you.
  • @JJ74 can I suggest that you have a look at the Low Carber Daily Forum - The LCD Group. I think you may find that the low carb approach will appeal to you. The added bonus is that the group members are very supportive and largely non judgmental. Have a look and see what you think.
  • MFP uses percentages and adds exercise calories to the daily total allowance. As your allowed calories goes up, MFP will automaticaly adjust the allowed carbs. If you don't eat back your exercise calories just ignore the adjusted figure and make the mental adjustment ie 26 gms.
  • I found that milled flax seed in a low carb yogurt to be of benefit. There are a number of people in this group who do not seem to conform to the ' group norm ' and for us it is often a case of finding what works for us rather than trying to follow the one size fits all approach.
  • Living in Northern Ireland we are at the crossroads of four different weather systems and rarely have a period of settled weather. We can even have several types of weather on the same day. It all goes to make life interesting. It's currently late spring and the temperature today is less than 10c at mid day. We're not…
  • Surely the focus of our attention should be glucose. Since carbs in whatever form are converted to glucose with the corresponding insulin spike it seems self evident that it is best to minimize the consumption of carbs.
  • Can we not accept that there are people for whom higher levels of fiber are essential?. There is no one size fits all. Each one of has to find what works for us. Some people fare well without increased fiber, others need higher levels of fiber. We are fearfully and wonderfully made and the fact that we are different makes…
  • This issue seems to be one which affects a significant number of people using LCHF. This is borne out by the number of people regularly using Mag Cit, using laxatives etc. It's more evidence that there is no one size fits all and that generalities such as drink more water, eat more fat etc are not the answer. People with…
  • The good news is that while claims of a 'cure' for T2 diabetes is open to interpretation and dependent to a large extent on the advisers definition of diabetes. It is perfectly possible for the vast majority of people with T2 to achieve a really good level of control and to live healthy and active lives. This is borne out…
  • Hi I'm type 2 and have found LCHF helpful in lowering my blood glucose. I realise that T1 is a different issue. Carbs by their very nature are addictive and you would do well to try and reduce your carbs as an aid to needing higher and higher levels of insulin. Eating high carbs and countering with corresponding higher…
  • There is a lot there to give thanks for and a real incentive to keep learning. You've shown real commitment and deserve the evident progress you've made, very well done and I wish you continued success on your journey.
  • 1/4 203.8 8/4 202.5 15/4 203.9 22/4 203.5 1/5 206.4 diff from 1/4 +2.6lbs This was a disappointing result for me. I learned that my digestive system could not function properly without a higher level of fiber. This meant including more oats and I had to increase my carb target to 50 to accommodate this. Despite using a…
  • @LJFJ; I'm not sure what's happening there. An alternative route would be via google:- http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/394-low-carber-daily-forum-the-lcd-group. When you arrive in the Group the Launch Pad can be found in the announcement section at the top of the group. Simply follow the link.
  • @Knitormiss; sorry to hear about your understandable frustration. You have clearly shown that you're someone who has the capacity to tackle problems in a methodical manner. There are times when the sheer complexity of a problem can overwhelm us. Perhaps this is a good time to step back and break the cycle of the ever…
