There's several ways. The main ones are the 5:2 method and the skipping breakfast one. Quite apart from losing weight (which they both do) skipping breakfast comes out better for general health.

The sugar cravings pass more quickly if you try cutting out carbs generally.

How do you feel on it? (I just ignore the 'you're not eating enough'. You can log it, it just won't appear on your news feed.) Calorie restriction may promote good health - it improves insulin sensitivity, which in turn reduces fasting glucose concentrations and it reduces abdominal obesity. So long as you are getting…

I've read a lot of research that indicates carbs are the main culprit - particularly refined carbs like sugar and white flour - and that the 'calories in/calories out model doesn't work. Many of you clearly disagree. Point me to the research, please.

Sweet almonds - the type sold as 'almonds' - are (as you might guess) sweet, although individual trees may produce more bitter tasting nuts. Bitter almond - the ones with cyanide - are a different type. You'd know if you had cyanide poisoning - vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion.

Whatever you do, don't try to do a low-fat version of low-carb.

Does it matter? So long as you use the appropriate calorie listing any difference in calories will be negligible. This isn't an exact science, you know.

As I understand it, the 2:5 diet (and other fasting diets) are more effective if you don't restrict calories on the other days. If you are having to go so low, has it occurred to you that some other method (for example, low-carb) might work better?

If you are low carb-ing, why avoid fatty meats like lamb, pork or beef? If you low-carb and low-fat you are trying to exist on proteins.

-And yet there is plenty of evidence to indicate that saturated fat does not raise cholesterol levels. Nor is there much evidence to suggest that high cholesterol levels are unhealthy. Look for example at traditional Inuit or Masai diets - a lot of fat, much of it saturated, some protein, few or no carbs.

There are very few peer reviewed scientific papers proving (or even indicating) anything about diet.

My problem is, if I have any sugar at all then I crave sweetness for the rest of the day (which I guess is addiction). At home I can do without, but it's almost impossible to avoid if someone else has cooked for you. (Sucrose, that is. I'm okay with fruit and dairy.) I find, after a couple of weeks of none at all, then so…

Not any more. Most oil is extracted by centifruge. Some smaller companies still cold press, but using centrifuge doesn't affect the quality of the oil. The words you need to look for are 'Extra Virgin'.

More and more research in both the UK and the US is emerging to show that exercise has a negligible impact on weight loss. That tri-weekly commitment to aerobics class? Almost worthless, as far as fitting into your bikini is concerned. The Mayo Clinic, a not-for-profit medical research establishment in the US, reports…

Several articles I've read over the last couple of years have suggested that, while exercise can be of great help in maintaining weight, it's not actually much use for losing weight. This has certainly been my experience.
