Make a plan and stick to it. it's really the only way to lose weight and keep it off. Binge eating and poor dietary choices are the reason many of us are here.

Water. About 20 minutes after you eat, drink 2 or 3 cups of water. Also try to make your evening meal with less sodium and less sugars (carbs). Many foods, especially carb rich foods at dinner (potatoes, rice, pasta, bread) make you crave more later.

aerobic or resistance exercise? I understand many overweight people can't manage aerobic (cardio) due to lung or heart conditions but what about resistance (weight) exercise? there are many exercises that you can do even in a sitting position that can help. Even a small amount of weight is a good start. Ideally the goal is…

Yes I agree that if you are going to add more weight training then definitely look at adding more calories in the form of high quality protein. Simple trick like 1/3 cup of pumpkin seeds can add a whopping 17g of protein to your day and only 300 calories. Greek Yogurt and Tuna are great too and lower in calories...

I tried the 900 calorie bit and found that all I lost was water weight because your body goes into starvation mode. Best thing to do is find a decent calculator that, based on your Body Mass Index (BMI), calculates approximately how many calories you need to gain, maintain or lose weight. The general rule of thumb for Men…

the calories earned through exercise are a guesstimate. Calories burned doing exercise are different for everybody and most amounts listed as exercise per hour are estimated. I personally ignore the calories earned portion in MFP as do I ignore the "if every day were like today..." because it is not accurate. Then again…

the gas part is always present when you consume a lot of fiber...the smell part is due to foods being consumed that when processed in the gut become foul smelling. Typically people who eat a lot of crap, sweets, pastries, fast food, processed meats, have generally foul smelling gas and poop due to all the crud in the food.…

Sex!!! Lots and lots of sex is great for "maintenance"...it's inexpensive :D and doesn't burn a lot of calories, contrary to the myth, but it does make the body release a chemical that allows you to burn calories more efficiently!

Keeping an eye on your intake and exercise are important but in some cases too little calories can cause a person to go into starvation mode. It happened to me in my first 2 weeks. I cut my intake to around 900 calories a day and didn't exercise much at all (sedentary). I lost 10 lbs. in the first week. When I weighed…

Ya. Isn't it ironic that you don't see TV ads for Brussel sprouts or 3 bean salad? But you constantly see ads for artery hardening heart attack burgers loaded with cheese, bacon and beef! Oh Henry bars, Coca Cola, Honey nut Cheerios the list goes on....

I am overweight and no I was not being judgmental. It's a plain fact. People who are obese or overweight don't exercise or don't exercise enough. Obesity is scientifically proven rarely genetic so my comment supports the fact that we get that way by eating more and moving less. My approach was simple...move more, eat…

Bad advice? Removing sugar from your diet couldn't be better advice. Study after study shows simple sugars wreak havoc on our bodies. Haven't you ever heard of "carbs beget carbs"? The more carbs (simple sugars) you consume the more the body craves them. That's just one of many problems simple sugars have. Sugars also…

Removing sugar and all it's forms teaches the body to use/burn the fat stores more effectively. lacarlabrown2914 stated that her weight was at 428 lbs. and that she did not know where to begin. Cutting out sugar is a first step that eventually leads to calorie counting. Counting calories can be hard and unless you have…

I forgot to mention, with blood pressure issues, try to keep your sodium intake to no more than 1600 - 2000 mg per day. Sodium wreaks havoc on blood pressure and most packaged foods (and all fast food) have very high amounts per portion. You'd be shocked to learn just how much sodium you can consume in a day. The average…

First remember what got you to the weight you are at. Think about the health problems it causes. Ask yourself if you are really trying to lose weight. At 400+ lbs. you have a long way to go, but weight loss is attainable you just have to think long term. Short term weight loss never, ever works. Your goal is to change how…

Your doctor said losing weight may help lower your cholesterol? a significant weight loss usually does but unfortunately sounds like your doctor doesn't really know. Certain types of foods can raise it and subsequently certain types can lower it. If you have a doctor that says they don't know, get another doctor!…

if your metabolism has slowed (thyroid) just remember to keep it going by spacing your meals no more than 2.5 - 3 hours apart. Anything longer can shut down the "fire" that burns calories and your weight loss slows to a halt.

I think the key is that everyone is different. "Starvation mode" can exist but it depends on the person. Of course you have likely heard that the key to losing weight and keeping it off is lifestyle changes. Clearly those of us that have weight issues usually get to the point of "dieting" because we move less and eat more.…

I wish it were that easy! According to fitness experts if you walk just 10000 steps per day your are healthy. Unfortunately I have a neurological disorder in my legs that has wasted my calf muscles to nothing so walking is out...I have to use the local swimming pool to "water walk" and although i do it an hour a day, I'm…

Problem with drinking is that one drink leads to two leads to snacking etc. because your sugar levels get thrown out of whack with alcohol. I personally don't drink at all save for special occasions or the odd night out. One glass of wine a night could also mean the glass gets larger every day and pretty soon the glass you…

Actually studies prove that sugar, especially refined sugar, can greatly affect weight gain. Example is that if you meet your caloric goal but the calories come from mostly sugars, then you certainly won't be losing any weight because the body will continue to store excess sugar as fat. The key is to remove these sugars…

you are on the right track. You just need to do more cross training because your body is used to the exercise you are doing now. Swimming is great for overall health but not that good for weight loss. Weight bearing exercise is going to provide more results if you have primarily been doing mostly cardio. Warm up for about…

Face it. there is no miracle diet or diet pill. It's all about common sense. Most people diet and fail because of habit. Those habits include poor food choices and not enough exercise. If you really want to lose weight, it is a slow process because realistically you have to change your habits, your lifestyle. Calories in…

ultimately this diet got me thinking but then when her promo video stated calories in - calories out does NOT equal weight loss, I just laughed. This basic formula is true if you want to lose weight but not necessarily so if you are a muscle freak who can easily consume 4000 calories a day in order to get more "ripped"…
