  • I did W7D1 last night. It was easily my worst run since starting the program. I was supposed to run for 25 minutes, and 10 minutes in I had the worst stitch I've ever gotten. I ended up taking a 3 minute walk break in the middle. I'm trying to be positive with myself that I did finish the full time....but I can't lie, I'm…
  • Thanks for the suggestions everybody! I will check out some of the body weight suggestions. Everyone on MFP seems to hail at the alter of heavy lifting, which I am hesitant about trying for a few reasons, so body weight sounds more my speed. Will definitely be incorporating biking and hiking into my activities once it…
  • Another vote for C25k. I am now on W7, and I started with a pretty solid walking base similar to you, OP. Running is a whole different ballgame, and C25k has been a HUGE help in improving my cardio endurance. I keep track of my heart rate and it's crazy how much more endurance I have in just 7 weeks.
  • I log my weight once/week on MFP, but weigh myself every morning/evening, just as a mental reminder to myself about my goals. It's also interesting to see the daily fluctuations, depending on what I've eaten, when I've exercised, etc.
  • On the program I'm doing ( http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml ), it's a true 20 minutes straight for W5D3, then it drops down to intervals for the first two days of W6. It was tough, but I made it! Hoping I can say the same for W6D3, scheduled for tomorrow!
  • "Someday is made up of a thousand tiny nows" ...a reminder that a big goal is made up of lots of little choices and actions. “She stood in the storm and when the wind didn’t blow her way, she adjusted her sails.”...if you are unhappy, or something isn't working, don't stagnate in misery. Change things!
  • I don't know that it would be possible for me to go slower and still be "running", lol! I'm already only going 4mph on the treadmill. But, you know what?? I DID IT. I RAN FOR 20 WHOLE MINUTES!! It was amazing, and I don't even feel like I want to cut my legs off today!
  • "I'm well inside the morbidly obese category". Can you walk for 30-45 minutes without being winded? If not, I would suggest working up to that mark before starting C25k, considering your size and fitness level at this moment.
  • I did W5D2 last night. I feel great, but am very nervious for W5D3 tomorrow...jumping from 8 minutes running to 20 seems like a HUGE leap.
  • Echoing several comments above, surgery is usually your best option. There is no "natural option" to remove gallstones. There is a medication, but you would need to take it the rest of your life, otherwise the stones will re-form. My doctor and surgeon both said they would only advise the meds if the patient is elderly…
  • You better develop some patience for yourself, and quickly. I graduated from law school a year and a half ago, (and about 30 pounds heavier than when I started). It’s an incredibly stressful environment, full of the most competitive people you have ever encountered. You will constantly feel the pressure to compare yourself…
  • I've seen every opinion under the sun voiced on this topic on MFP...some people think that they are garbage, others swear by them. Go with what makes the most sense to you, and perhaps consult your doctor. Personally, I take a multivitamin and Vitamin D everyday with my lunch, as it's what my MD recomended. I feel pretty…
  • I lost about 30 pounds with just diet, once-a-week pilates, ocassional yoga, and semi-frequent walks. I was very sedentary other than that, and had my gallbladder removed during that time which limited even those low-impact activities for about a month. Caloric deficit is enough to lose weight. Now I am trying to "feel"…
  • Echoing the above posts about a specialty running store. I just went to a Fleet Feet for the first time on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised by the attention and level of service that I got. They measure your feet, do a gait analysis, have you try on at least 5-6 pairs and run on a treadmill in the ones you like to…
  • I don't log them. These "BLTs" and the inevitability of less than perfect tracking of other foods is why I don't eat back my exercise calories. I figure that the two balance each other out. I do log anything more than a bite though...careful that you don't fall into the trap of "oh, I had half a brownie, that's just a bite…
  • This is what I do. I have an entry for "Waist" (smallest part), "Stomach" (across belly button), and "Hips" (around the widest part of hips/butt).
  • Both of these are totally dependent upon the style of yoga or Pilates that is being taught and the style/personality/philosophy of the instructor. Both involve a lot of stretching and body resistance In my experience with both, Pilates involves more dynamic movement, whereas yoga is more 'pose' oriented. Yoga is…
  • I'm on W3D3. This is the third time I've attempted C25k and the furthest I've ever gotten, and the best I've ever felt while doing it. What is working for me: 1. Go slow. Slower than you think of as a "running" pace. If you can't keep a conversation through at least your first run set, you are going too fast. (My long term…
  • Your body will be working on recovery, be gentle to it, and don't try to cut your calories so much that you make your recovery harder. Physical therapy will be so much more challenging than you expect, and I would predict that will be a significant calorie burn (especially if you do the exercises at home as you are told).
  • Foam roller!! Get one and youtube some videos on how to use it. When you use it after working out or running, I've found it significantly cuts down on my soreness (and it's great for preventing injury, especially in your IT band).
  • Great topic! I get a little annoyed with the repeated "my co-workers are conspiring to make me fat" or "my boyfriend/husband/roommate/mom is sabotaging my diet"...it's a nice change to focus on the positives. I've found most people in my life to be pretty supportive, in that they don't pry when I give vague answers to…
  • I'm 5'9" and I was wearing a size 18 in trousers, and 16 in jeans when I was 225. I eat about 1500 cal/day and have been steadily losing for the past 6 months. I'm now at about 190 and I am wearing a size 14 trouser, and size 12 jean. If you are as strict about calorie counting and exercise as you say, I would consult a…
  • Once a day women's multivitamin, and an additional Vitamin D, both per doctor's recommendations. I have changed from taking them right away in the morning to taking them with lunch. Taking with food eliminates the nasuea that I was otherwise experiencing.
  • I've also had lots of rolled ankles/sprained ankles/strained tendon issues. On the recommendation of a physical therapist, I started doing some balanced based exercise (primarily yoga and pilates), and it's been a huge help to my balance and overall cordination. I have attempted to do the C25k twice in the past, and never…
  • You look great!!! Congratulations. It's my secret goal to someday be able to wear a two-piece...sigh.
  • I don't like to talk about my weightloss to anyone, other than here on the internet. I feel like it makes me less in control, and like I'm now I'm going to be disappointing someone else if I backslide. I'm doing this for me, not for anyone else, and I get to decide how I feel about my progress and my setbacks. I also don't…
  • A few things I do to keep myself from overeating: I make my lunches for the week on Sunday, and pre-enter them here on MFP. (Not as tempted to go out to eat with coworkers.) I preportion snacks with the calories written on the baggies to keep at work. Everytime I want a snack I make myself go into another room, and drink…
  • Skim or 1%. I'm lucky to live in Wisconsin, where milk is often cheaper than water! A nutritionist I saw last year cautioned me against using Almond or Soy as a replacement for dairy, because they are not as nutritionally dense as dairy. Additionally, there are some studies that women who consume large quantities of soy…
  • After gaining about 35 pounds during graduate school and my first year of working (and I've always been a little overweight), my Dad sat me down and had a very frank, but kind, discussion with me. He expressed his concerns about my weight impacting my health, and said something that continues to motivate me "You are such…
  • Echoing the comments above, good quality coffee makes a HUGE difference. I've been drinking my coffee black (sometimes a splash of milk and vanilla extract for a treat.) However, my office just changed vendors with the new year, and the new coffee is garbage, and I can't drink more than 1/2 cup of it...yuck. My game plan…
