  • 862 miles for 2014. I would like to reach 1000 in 2015, but it might not happen. As long as I am not below 862 next year, then I will be happy.
  • My last few pairs have only lasted 350 miles before I start feeling hip pain. I'm jealous of the ones who can get so many more miles from their shoes!
  • I had a huge blister on my arch and mistakenly kept it moist and covered for a few days. It hurt really bad. As soon as I let it dry out, it started to heal and feel much better. I will never again keep a blister moist during the initial healing period! I had a race while still recovering from it and I slathered it with…
  • I got a 7th gen nano for Christmas and I was running with it in an armband that was super annoying. Just a week or so ago I bought a $5 case with a clip on the back of it. I clip it on the outside of my sports bra, so that the nano is between my shirt and bra (yeah, I know this isn't an option for you). It has been…
  • I prefer to run in the evenings, but it is so nice to have things done early. Sometimes I get on a roll and do morning runs for a week or more before going back to my evening runs. The more days you get up early for morning runs, the easier it is. I also noticed a huge difference when I had a quick cup of coffee before my…
  • I got a Geopalz pedometer for my daughter (6 at the time). She would log numbers of steps into their website to earn minutes playing games. Plus she would try to beat me (I have a Fitbit). It was for fun, more like a game. I think they were coming out with newer ones with Bluetooth. It's all in how you approach it with…
  • I had a huge blister recently that kept getting re-injured with each run (mine was on inside ball of my foot, not the heel). I ended up getting thicker socks and putting Vaseline on it for my runs. It took a few weeks, but I managed a 25K trail race while it was still healing. Every time I tried a bandaid while running, it…
  • Definitely do the trail race. I just completed my first trail race yesterday and it was so much fun. All of the changes in terrain and scenery kept me from being bored and the time flew by. I'm not sure your pace, but I am not a fast runner and I was in the middle of the women (only 50, so it was a small group). You may…
  • I struggle with hip pain when I start increasing my long runs over 10 miles. This training cycle I have incorporated more stretching, yoga and leg lifts and I have have avoided any problem so far. If running is all I do, then I have problems with my hip. Good luck!
  • I live in TX so deal with lots of heat and humidity in the summer too. I like to do my shorter runs in the evenings, rather than the mornings. We get a breeze in the evenings and the humidity is lower. I recommend bringing water or Gatorade along on runs over an hour. It takes some getting used to, but it's possible to run…
  • It's audiobooks or nothing for me. I don't think it's possible to not get tired of your playlist, so I gave up on music long ago. Audiobooks are my treat on my runs.
  • I always think that cross-training is a good idea. I tend to have more twinges in my hips and knees when I am only running. When I add in circuit training, cycling and swimming, then I am less likely to deal with injuries. I probably wouldn't follow the 30DS program exactly every day, but there is no reason you can't…
  • I ran the same race yesterday, yay! I agree that likely your pains are from doing all of your training on a treadmill. I just wanted to address your chest congestion comments. I think a lot of colds and flu are going around right now in Houston. Both of my kids and husband have a cold. On Sat I felt a little bit like I was…
  • Congrats! I did the Aramco half today and I couldn't agree more about the conditions and the course (we had zero hills, though). Great job!
  • Ok, I am not an ultra runner (only one HM under my belt), but I have to ask what sort of pace do you maintain for 50 miles?
  • I was using Running Ahead to track my running back before I started training for triathlon. I was happy to find that Running Ahead also tracks swimming and cycling workouts. It's free and I really like it, because I can look at the calendar to make sure I got in all of my workouts for the week/month. It also keeps track of…
  • I have used Runkeeper for almost 1.5 yrs with no problem. It's free, easy to use and pretty accurate. My only issue has been it burning up the battery on my long runs, but it's fine if you shut off the screen. I use a HRM and just manually add my workouts and calories, so do not have Runkeeper linked to MFP.
  • 2013 was my first Tri season. My weekly goal was to have 2 workouts from each of the sports, with one of those being a brick. I also would recommend starting with a sprint distance, just so you can work out all of the transition issues before your Oly distance. I'm focusing on running though the winter and will start back…
  • For me, the gloves are the most important! Be careful not to wear too much up top, but everyone's cold tolerance is different. If my hands get too cold, then I feel like I'm freezing all over. Good luck on your race!
  • Just an update. The chance of rain decreased and the temps were between 38-41 (based on what my car said when I arrived and left the race). I wore capri pants and a long sleeve shirt plus gloves. The humidity was over 80% and it was really quite cold (or possibly I am a total wuss). I was fine during the race, with the…
  • I didn't say I was bundling up, I was just asking if I should do anything differently with the rain. We had temps in the 80's earlier this week, so the cold front has been abrupt. I prefer to run in the cold, but really dislike the cold-wet combo. I run with a visor sometimes, so will maybe wear that if it is pouring.…
  • Maybe you could start logging your resting heart rate every morning before getting up until your appointment? That way you would have data from a number of days. My mom had to do that with her blood pressure before a doctor visit.
  • I've lost a few toenails and they take FOREVER to fall off. Like 3+ months and then it takes a month or two for them to regrow. Mine were lost from skiing or from doing mud runs in old sneakers that were too small and not meant for running. Sounds like it was definitely the shoes for you. Glad you got some new ones. Good…
  • Yes, I have a friend who is really into cycling and would love to join her on some rides. I do not live in a neighborhood that is easy to ride more than ~8 miles in without just doing really short loops around the same areas, so to increase my distance for long rides I need to drive somewhere else. I feel a little bit…
  • I have had that trouble with a few of my tops - doesn't bother me on shorter runs, but sometimes I come home and hurt either under my arms or where the bottom of the sports bra is right across my front middle. I have figured out that I have a few tops that never hurt me and only stick with those for the longer runs and I…
  • I think that there are very few people that would be able to keep up with a 20-30 mile 18-22 mph group ride on a hybrid.
  • Yeah, my hybrid is a nice bike, but it keeps me from going on any group rides in my area. I end up doing a lot of my bike training at the gym (spin class), but that has not prepared me well for the hills and wind in my recent races. It is also kind of demoralizing to hear "on your left" so many times during a race! I'm…
  • Thanks a lot! My initial thought was to get a tri bike, but I would like to participate in group rides and hate to eliminate that option. I spoke to a friend earlier (road racer, not tri athlete) and was given the same advice. I feel better having that decision narrowed down, now for all the other choices!
  • I have the FT4 and it works great in the pool and also in lakes. I have not tried it in salt water, so don't know about that. I read somewhere not to push the buttons while it is submerged, but that is the only thing I have taken care to avoid. Good luck!
  • In the summer, I run in the evenings (it may be hotter, but there is usually less humidity and a bit of a breeze). In the winter, I try to do some mornings, but I struggle with morning workouts and usually end up running in the evenings also. I love weekend runs in the cooler months from about 11am-4pm....my absolute…
