  • Pop it in an air popper, sprinkle with nutritional yeast. Healthy cheezy 'corn! Delish.

  • Faster than that dude sitting on the sofa eating Twinkies. Slower than that super athlete who is winning racing medals every weekend.
  • "The Insulin Resistance Diet" by Hart and Grossman provides a lot of very useful information. I don't necessarily agree with everything in the book but I learned a lot from it. Two principles from this book that I've applied to my way of eating and have found beneficial are: 1. The Two Hour Fat Window – Your body can only…
  • Technically, a gluten free diet is not a weight loss plan but something one does for medical reasons - Celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or wheat intolerance. People with these conditions eliminate the food products they cannot eat and instead substitute ones that they can eat. Often, gluten free items contain more…
  • The Oatmeal! I totally loved this whole thing. "When I run, the world grows quiet. Demons are forgotten, krakens are slain, and blerches are silenced."
  • How snugly did your pants fit before you started losing? If they were loose, they will become too big quickly. If they were tight, it will take longer. What is your body shape? Are you a pear or an hourglass? If you carry your weight mostly on the bottom half, it may take longer to change pants sizes. Are you exercising?…
  • *facepalm* I'll be very sick but *#$&@ I'll be skinny! Yay! Really?
  • Also, chemicals. Lots and lots of chemicals. And therein lies the problem.
  • My current favorite tracks for running: It's Time - Imagine Dragons The Walker - Fitz and the Tantrums Wake Me Up - Avicii Alive Again - Phillip Phillips Shake It Out - Florence + The Machine Come with Me Now - Kongos Thunder Clatter - Wild Club Love Runs Out - OneRepublic Girls Chase Boys - Ingrid Michaelson On Top of the…
  • Many songs by Bond, especially Explosive. Also Wolfgang's 5th Symphony - Wolfgang Gartner (And I confess *nerd alert* that sometimes I really love to put this on a playlist for running - Pavarotti singing La donna è mobile from Rigoletto. http://youtu.be/8A3zetSuYRg )
  • I eat meat, dairy, veggies, and fruit. I occasionally include some form of starch/grain but rarely and in very limited portions. You're welcome to look at my diary. I'm not doing super low carb, Atkins-style. I average 65g/day and have (happily) been eating this way for a year and a half. In addition to low carb I eat…
  • IMO, if it comes in a box or a bag or a can it's probably "junk food." That definition is very broad and there are certainly exceptions but basically it works. And, yes, everyone is going to consume some junk food. My concern lies with people who eat ONLY junk food. Their diaries are full of cereals, bars, fruit snacks,…
  • I am not a sock puppet. In saying I felt better "immediately" upon eating, my basic thought process was this: you stop being active, you sit down to eat your meal, and within the 15-30 minutes it takes to consume said meal and resume being active, one feels that their energy has been replenished. In other words,…
  • My assumption with the analogy was that the gas tank was empty at the start of the trip - ie that in the morning your "gas tank" is empty and you have no fuel. I have been corrected to understand that some people do not have an empty "gas tank" in the morning and therefore have no problems with not eating until later in…
  • How can you count calories if you don't weigh your food? Are you just guestimating? That can lead to some big problems as cwolfman13 already mentioned. I make the majority of my food from scratch and try to avoid processed foods. Quality matters A LOT to me. (Like you, I cringe a bit when I look through some people's food…
  • What bcattoes said, "You eat and some of the carbs are quickly digested which raises your blood glucose."
  • I think bcattoes' explanation of low blood glucose is a more likely answer.
  • Thanks sseqwnp, SugaryLynx, and bcattoes for your insight and info! And thanks to kpost323 for your comments.
  • Hrm. I always start to feel sluggish. I can feel myself slowing down, like a wind-up toy or something. I eat something and almost immediately my energy level goes back up.
  • I use a Nike+ sportsband. Super simple to use and accurate. The Nike+ also has an ap that most of my irl running friends use.
  • When you feel sluggish and hungry, then eat something and feel energized and not hungry......isn't that because your body is using the food you just ate? I mean, does eating just remind the body that there's extra energy hanging around somewhere that it hasn't used yet?
  • Soooo.....if your body burns the calories while you're asleep, how are you "prepared for the next day"? The calories are gone, therefore, you need more. Right?
  • I definitely do not start the day with a half a tank of gas. My low gas light is ON and I can't go very far before I have to call AAA if I don't fill up the tank. Seriously, within two hours I am crashed and the rest of the day is horrible.
  • So when you eat a huge dinner and go directly to sleep, your body just says, "Oh, h/she isn't doing anything with these calories so we'll just set them aside until morning and use them for energy then"? (I'm asking in all seriousness because I don't get how this works.)
  • What I said the last time this topic came up: If I skip breakfast, it's a disaster. I'm chasing the hungries all day long, I make poor food choices, and I just in general feel crappy. So, for me, breakfast is absolutely essential. By morning I have been fasting for 12+ hours so I need fuel to function and get through my…
  • There are so many factors involved in this - your starting weight, how your clothes fit before you started losing, your body shape, how much you exercise, what type of exercise you do, etc. There is certainly no universal answer. Between my starting weight of 225 and my current weight of 167 I've gone from a size 20 to a…

  • Ok, so, I'm a total neophyte in the running world and I feel like a total poser being in this group. :ohwell: I completed Couch to 5K and three 5K races in 2010. No running in 2011 or 12. Last year I did a Color Run 5K with several friends. And now I'm back at this running thing with a whole lot of seriousness and dreams…
  • There was a day when I was doing the Couch to 5K program when I realized that I loved running and there was just this sense that there my "inner runner" was being set free at last, after years of being smothered in an overweight and sedentary body. O my g....that was an awesome day. Then this spring, after a few years of…
  • Quinoa is a seed rather than a grain, so the current trend to eat grain free is making it popular. Compared to rice, it has more protein, more fiber, fewer carbs, and significantly higher amounts of several important vitamins and minerals. You can use quinoa in the same ways that you use rice. Or use it instead of oats to…
