Add strength to your workout, and build up your intensity on your cardio, then scale back every 4 weeks, then hit it harder the folllowing week. Try different types of cardio, and see if there are any classes that combine cardio and strength, i.e. boot camp, kettlebells, or body pump. Are you doing interval training?

I have only a little Splenda, and occasionaly I cook with it. I have hired two registered dieticians, with high credentials, and they both feel that the amount I have is fine.

Change it up every 4-6 weeks, and change your reps weekly. Also add assisted pullups or lat pull downs. Be sure to lift your rib cage and engage the move from just below your shoulder blades and armpits, then follow through with your arms. Also, start doing pushups. you can start by holding your body in a perfect plank,…

That's great!!!!

Have a great time at your marathon. Where are you running it at?

Oh, and remember those ads with the bananas listed next to things that are bad for you? Sorry, but they are just trying to entice you to give them more information, so they can get money from you. Come on. I'm a runner, and bananas rock my world and help me recover from runs! There are times for high glycemic foods, and…

I agree with most of the posts here. The thing about this site, is that it is NOT a diet site. This is a tool to help us manage what we eat, and to choose the healthiest fuels for our bodies. Personally I ask myself two questions. 1) Why is this food available to me? In other words, what purpose do orange and apple trees…

Great list! You got me psyched! Here is a little tip I learned two years ago that works so well, especially in the summer. Hopefully we all know about "Body glides" and vaseline to put everywhere fabric rubs, to avoid chafing. But my young friend, who has placed first place women in many races, told me to put…

@ JNick77. Ha ha....No, he doesn't do power snatches from the floor, and he can barely get his arms above his head. But his mind is alert, and he fights his arthritis with a vengeance. He faithfully executes and works hard with every task I give him. He shows up an hour and a half early for his session every week because…

I don't have old equipment. And I have never had Nautilus equipment. You don't know what I have. My machines work the muscles on a 3 pulley system to work like free weights. But there are some pulling type exercises that can best be done with pulleys, verses weights. I don't put all beginners on just machines. I'm sorry if…

Me too. Have done some marathons and halfs, but would love to follow your journey. It's a great new goal. Congratulations.

sorry, hate to harp, but machines serve their purpose too. I have several clients that want simple, so I teach them ways to use machines that truly are beneficial, and teach them how to add variety, without confusing the heck out of them. It really depends on YOUR resources, YOUR orthopedic and medical concerns, YOUR…

From a personal trainer here: THANK YOU. It kills me to see people waste so much money on fads, memberships, videos, programs, magazines etc. when they really don't know what's right for them. And yet they won't invest in a trainer. There is no one perfect program. A good, reputable trainer will discuss all your time…

well, that would be fine for MFP purposes. But I would just suggest calling it what it is, an "abdominal mesurement" not a waist measurement. Also, when figuring the hip/waist ratio (waist divided by hips), you need to measure, the narrowest part. That is important because of health risks. sorry, but I keep seeing everyone…

Most everything I think of has to do with moving my body, even things that aren't considered exercise.... So I will say watching a really great musical!

I have a more gradual program than c25k. It's a 10 week 3 day per week program. It has worked for dozens of my clients. I would be happy to share it, if you're interested. Most people also try too run to fast at first during their running intervals. For body mechanics, do a mid foot strike, and imagine you are being lead…

keep in mind that where we measure to sew is not the same place a personal trainer measures.
-
And your hip measurement should be the widest part above the gluteal folds ( your butt lines). People may "hear" other things. But the actual standard for the fitness industry is where I have explained.
-
I am a trainer. According to ACSM, which sets the standard for all Personal training certs out there, your waist measurement should be at your smallest circumference on your torso. Your abdominal measurement is a parallel measurement at the level of your belly button. I measure both. MFP allows you to add measurements. I…

Thanks, I sent this to my mom, who eats GF. But I have to ask, 2/3 of what? for the ground flax seed?

good points. Crash dieting makes you NOT FUN to be around. So if you are doing this for someone else, it's not going to work. If you're doing it for yourself, it's not worth it.

How did you measure your calorie burn? A Garmin?

You sound like a positive coach, and that's what I like about Curves, but how can you add variety, when the circuit is only a few machines, and you can only pump faster to make it harder (pumping faster can be very hard on people with arthritis etc.) What I don't see is the ability to add factors like balance, change in…

Another point....a lot of Curves are offering Zumba in the circuit. It's supposed to make things more fun and effective. And women are liking it. However, I know a lot of those women just want to do Zumba. They don't want to have to stop and do the machines. It's really seen it's day. People know it doesn't work the way…

I own a gym, and I'm a personal trainer, so I'm biased. I think Curves did a lot for the fitness industry in helping us realize that we need to help people feel comfortable. So that's what I work hard to do. But from a trainer standpoint, I think Curves is very ineffective. It goes against everything I learned as a…

yeah, well I put off an ipod for a long time. Then I started teaching Zumba. At first I just brought different cd's. Then I had to burn new cd's at least twice a month. Then I just realized it's easier to change playlists whenever I want. So I gave in. Now I have a small Nano that holds up to 4000 songs. I want to change a…

Yes, the technical term from ACSM is "maximum circumference just above gluteal fold", which basicly means widest part. I also measure my abdomen, right at the belly button line. I measure my waist, at the smallest measurement between hips and chest. I measure my right upper arm, 1/2 between elbow and shoulder joint, and my…

Give it more than one try. I even teach Zumba now,. But when I first tried it, all the music sounded the same to me, and even though I had a lot of exercise class and dance experience, I felt like I couldn't shake and roll quite that much. But now I love the music and I love the dancing. The suggestions here are the same I…
