I own a gym, and many elipticals, especially the Precor brand are WAY off in their calorie estimates. Precor was the first brand to make elipticals. I don't know if their calorie calculations were theoretical or not. I doubt they did extensive scientific testing. I have another brand of eliptical as well. Their calories…

Love it, and good to hear from you!

All the suggestions are good on this post. You've got to keep working on the fat on the top, and genetics is huge, but if you had it before, you could get it back close. Pilates is good because it gets the deepest abdominal muscles in the body, the ones that often get neglected with traditional crunches. In PIlates you…

I have a pumpkin bread recipe of my mother's I have tweaked. I'll share if you guys want. Just let me know. Right now I'm eating lunch. But thanks for this great post. I love pumpkin. Maybe I'll start a yam post.

I own a small town gym in Washington State. It's interesting hearing all these responses. From what I hear, I think most of you would love our gym. It's personal, convenient, no contract, excellent equipment, an attractive setting, something for everyone (except swimmers) reasonably priced, and we have awesome classes, and…

Hello. I live in Sequim, on the Olympic peninsula!

sorry, to clarify, scroll down to page 12 for the entire article. Good stuff!

http://www.acsm.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Search&CONTENTID=14886&SECTION=20101&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm Above is the article I referred to. The fartlek or interval training is talked about on page 13. I think this will help you assess how ready you are, and what you can expect.

ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) recommends you do interval training. They say you have to be at high altitude for several days to get the training effects. But to compensate, interval training works. I find this really interesting, and here's why. I live at 200 feet above sea level. All my relatives are really…

The instructor is probably trying to motivate, not intimidate. A good instructor will seek out new people, help them with bike fit, suggest they sit more often, and keep resistance down, while they are getting used to it. Talk to instructor before class. He or she will probably help you feel a lot more at ease. If not, I…

I always tell my students to start with a half hour and go longer after a couple weeks. Also, vaseline on your back side helps. So does a gel seat or bicycle shorts. Good advice about adjusting the seat. Center your weight into your hips, not your knees. New things always feel hard for the first couple weeks. You WILL…

First of all, congrats on your dedication, and please know that adding variety next month will be good. Regarding reps, I change my clients reps almost every week. Anywhere between 6-15 reps will get you the results you looking for, and changing it up will be good. There are hundreds of ways to put sets together, and no…

I had people tell me about this, and when they said that my blood type should not eat berries, I knew it had to be an insane plan. When I was pregnant, the only thing that stayed down was cold water and berries. And I am kind of amazed that there are so many questions about "diets" on this web site. I thought people who…

I think it's more important how people act than anything else.

oh, and try roasting vegetables.....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm good.
-
Start putting more veggies in your casseroles, and change the cheeses you use. For instance, I have a lasane I make (often in a dutch oven outside during the summer) I use Italian seasoned ground turkey, non fat cottage cheese, 1/2 the amount of lasagne noodles called for, and 1/2 the amount of mozarella cheese. I also use…

It's tempting to say that women will not bulk up. As a trainer, I used to tell people that....But some, do, and they know it. There are different body types. Usually the women who do, don't seem to mind. But most don't. Regarding osteoporisis, ACSM conducted a study back in 2004. They found that what helped women increase…

I like some things about WW, but the people who ran our meetings bragged about how they lost all their weight without exercise. When everything become about the scale, and not about improving your life, it's wierd and wrong, a different WW. I just couldn't do it any more. They knew I was a trainer, so when I went to the…

Thanks. I looked it up and posted it to facebook. Great deal. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely see a sports medicine doctor, or a pt that really knows what they're doing, and make sure it's one who understands running. I am amazed at how many pt's give running advice, and they have never run. Mostly their advice is back off. PT's who run can also tell you how to adjust. Now for recovery here is what I…

keep wearing what you want. Anyone who would say that should not matter to you. I do know what you're feeling. Take a picture and look at it. I beet it looks great!

The suggestion for early morning is a good one, but not for the reason you may think. Early morning assures you get it done, and that would be the reason to consider it. But if you must work out at night.....know this: There has been plenty of proof that eating late is not the culprit. The only way it is sometimes worse to…

I meant try the program I sent ya.

Then, try this. I did it because I had to for my job. Now I LOVE running.
