  • Over time I reduced the additives in coffee. Gave up sugar and lost five #s. When I stopped drinking milk in coffee, same thing. I've tried to add back rice or almond milk, but it's gross. So black, organic only, coffee. Why organic? Because coffee and produce grown in South America can be sprayed with DDT and other…
  • My son has the same problem. Cannot retain weight. Every morning he starts the day with a protein shake which is calorie dense. It seems to do the trick.
  • So the standard recommendation to shop the perimeter of the grocery store should eliminate most of the processed foods from overwhelming you. Make a list and stick to it dipping into isles without cart to limit temptation. We have two grocery stores that carry organic products ... due to demand. I compare products on…
  • Last week I was researching bone stock and learned that many tested brands, even some organic, contain high levels of lead. You should check it out and see what you think. Food is your most important medicine. It's nice to use your health care dollars on nutritious food. Having a degree from an agriculture college I would…
  • lol @amelialoveshersnacks. When I input my recipes sometimes I have 15+ ingredients. I just keep going and adding flavor until it is delicious or I wear out. Sidelined from my business by lyme, my favorite supermarket which can be demolition derby offered online shopping. Under pressure they are expanding their line of…
  • This week was all about apples. Applesauce, apple cider, apple cider vinegar made 3 ways ... with white sugar, raw honey & molasses, apple wine. Also DH and #1 son made a batch of Jalapeno jelly. allrecipes.com/recipe/47520/jalapeno-jelly/ The apple cider vinegar is homework project for my herbalism course.
  • @SandiKani Nothing like farm fresh. You have total control over what you eat. I eat quail eggs as our hens like to raise their chicks and get quite aggravated when we steal their eggs. @Stef1959 Our dogs don't kill our chickens, although our big guy likes to bounce them sometimes. We have ferocious predator problems. The…
  • @magic very pretty & clever. Will have to keep in mind for excellent travel food. Did you use dressing?
  • It's almost chestnut season. Chili paste from mixed hot peppers.
  • @Eleted You are so right about seeing high caloric foods bandied about on the forum. There are certain foods that are contagious and the mere mention in a post or log can set off a spree in my friends' diaries. I log those calories as quick add or don't log at all anymore on the rare occasion I indulge.
  • For me this is a matter of whose problem is this anyway? If one has been granted the title of family cook, then the recipients should rejoice they are so well loved. Cooking is a lot of work. Parents with dependent children are of course obligated to feed them. Picky eaters can be rehabilitated and s l o w l y be brought…
  • It's hard for me to take this thread seriously as the poster's profile is empty and her age is 100. A quick look at a diary would reveal if eating habits are the problem. Without that information it's all hearsay. I'm thrilled to leave behind the physical burdens of the reproductive year's and embrace new forms of exercise…
  • Hi all. Been 4 months since I checked in. Took an hour to catch up. Welcome to all new ladies & gentleman. Here's a radical concept ... Real Life Exercise. If you can do it you will burn calories. Vacuum, mop, laundry, cooking and food prep, painting, raking leaves ... CICO. Not your thing? I would caution new exercisers…
  • I've had the shine sports bands & mesh since May. Just changed battery and considered switching bands as my shine has popped out a number of times recently. Found the old rubber band was stretched more than a new band, so I guess it's prudent to replace band every couple of months. The mesh band was very pricey and is…
  • Same name.
  • Hi all. I'm 60 & disabled / retired. Exercise is just as important to people with chronic illness as other fit folk. Had my Shine since May and really appreciate it's style and functionality. My days of extreme exercise are over. Now I do real life exercise which of course doesn't necessarily register ... like gardening.…
  • Chef from a world class spa spilled the secrets of creamy soups. Cauliflower and rice milk. He said they tried every possible combination and that is it. I've made carrot ginger bisque so far, it was great. Going to make cream of asparagus soup today.
  • Have been fit all my life. Have been fat (obese/ or post pregnant with "baby weight") three times. Got out pad, paper and calorie count book and monitored myself back to trim. Am almost 60 so I've had plenty of time to go weight rogue and didn't, like you I don't overeat. Giving up the empty calories in alcohol was key…
  • Environmental Working Group http:/ewg.org/foodscores/products/722648715640-SuperiorPittedDates. Search frozen and many processed food for nutritional value. Homepage has downloadable list of produce ... Best 15 & dirty dozen. For those unable to read labels you'll find ingredient list, too.
  • I think the cost of organic meats exorbitant and not sustainable. I get high quality beef products from a butcher, we raise free range chicken & quail but only eat them if they have bad temperaments or are hit by car. The eggs, though, ahhh ... you have never had a nutritious egg until you go free range. Wild game is great…
  • @Skyweigh We had a controversial saying back in the day ... No Pain No Gain. Though unpopular it really is true. In my life I have found that since it "hurts" when you do and has way more negative consequences when you don't, I just keep going. I have learned you can be chronically ill and in pain and still exercise within…
  • I assure you spicy seeds and nuts are delicious in soups, salads, trailmix, stirfry's, and when cool enough right out of the pan. Enjoy.
  • Welcome to the safe haven. Shhhh!
  • Incorporate 1-3 tablespoon of healthy oils ... coconut, olive, avacado, grapeseed into your day. Nuts & sees should do nicely, too. Combine both and add 1 Tablespoon coconut oil (will harden when cold) to 1 cup raw seeds or nuts in skillet. Stay with it and stir about 5-10 minutes. Add healthy sweetener (xylitol, birch…
  • With the Japanese Song Quail the eggs are deceptively small powerhouses of nutrients & antioxidants. They have 14 calories each. 5 quail eggs = 1 chicken egg.
  • @‌ Skyweigh You have facilitated several fulfilling friendships for me with this thread ... so thanks.
  • That is a cast iron Japanese omelet pan with 10 quail eggs cooked in a bit of coconut oil. I usually have 3-5 quail eggs daily to jumpstart my day. See superfood thread. Hey, nice to have a horticultural sister. Will be fun to swap trade secrets. Thanks for starting this thread.
  • So jealous. Snow melting but have 1 1/2' of snow ice still. Our primary crop for now is eggs. Free range heritage birds and Japanese Song Quail. The coops of our breeding and brooding birds are scattered throughout the landscaping of the compound ... mostly in the Not So Wild Wildflower Garden. In foreground is chestnut…
  • Seems like you found your way to the right group. We're pretty reasonable as a group. I keep an open diary and welcome friends who like to eat, cook and live closer to the land. ewg.org. http://www.ewg.org/foodscores/products. Environmental Working Group is a good website for evaluating the quality of processed foods…
