Hey, "overweight" and "obese" are better than "fatso", which is usually the preferred word among school children. At least that's what I used to hear. Now THAT is a self-esteem killer! I do not think physicians should avoid using the "overweight" and "obese". Those are the clinical terms and it shouldn't be sugar-coated. I…

Sounds delicious. I'd love to know the nutrional info, though. Particularly calories.

I agree there is a lot of conflicting information. I think at times, I've both underestimated or overestimated my calorie consumption based on some of these entries. And I do eat a lot of baked chicken breast. I'm using about 45 calories per ounce now. I weigh my portion after cooking to determine the size. I log a…

This happened with me last summer. I was on a high blood pressure medication, and when I worked out--especially when I worked with a personal trainer who had me getting up and down, bending over a lot, I started to experience a great deal of dizziness. I'd take my blood pressure later in the evening (when it always seems…

I'm very fond of the Fiber One 90 calorie brownies. I especially like the ones with peanut butter in them since I happen to believe that chocolate and peanut butter together are one of the greatest things in the world (Care to guess what my absolute favorite candy is?) I'm not sure how filling they are, but they are very…

When your idea of a rest day is to only work out once for two hours in the morning and just a long walk in the afternoon.

I was very nervous about joining, and I kept putting it off, trying to decide what gym would be best for me. I'd already lost a little over 40lbs through diet and walking, but I was still quite large, and I figured I'd look pretty hopeless to people at the gym. I think one of the problems that we large people have going to…

When I was much younger--still in school--I was turned down for a policy because of my weight. So I understand the feeling. I wish that slap in the face had been the wakeup call for me that it obviously was for you. It took me much longer to turn things around. Congratulations--and you look great!

Be careful with MFP's estimates of exercise calories burned. It's estimates for some exercises such as the elliptical trainer are ridiculously high. If I really ate back all the calories that it tells me I've burned, I'd be gaining weight, not losing. I use a heart rate monitor to determine how I'm really burning calories.…

One ounce of almonds (about 24 nuts) is 170 calories. If you combine that with drinking an 8-ounce glass of water, this will help fill you up.

My doctor said it counts, so I do count it. It's also very good for you, especially if you don't add any sweetener.

1/2 cup frozen strawberries, mixed berries, or blueberries 1/2 skim milk 1/4 low fat vanilla yoghurt (Dannon Light tastes very good) 1 tsp ground flaxseed (the extra fiber and omega-3 is good for you) 1 tsp vanilla whey powder 1 tsp reduced fat peanut butter 6 ice cubes (more for additional volume) Blend til smooth.…

You'd have to really go hard for a long time. A lot more than 30 minutes. I do the elliptical all the time and MFP WAY overestimates the number of calories burned. I wear an HRM, and the amount it tells me that I'm burning is 1/3 or less of what MFP says, and about half of what the machine says. So while I enter my minutes…

Me too! I broke down and had a Reese's peanut butter egg last Friday--it was my reward to myself for being pretty good all week. Then I found them on a clearance sale last weekend and bought two more! :( I'm trying to make myself wait until Friday to have one. A couple of weeks ago I weakened and bought a bag of Sweet Tart…

I miss salty snacks much more than I do sweet things. What I wouldn't give for a bag of classic (no baking, no healthy stuff) Lays potatoe chips or a bag of Cheetos! *sigh* One thing I've found are Whole Foods Veggie Chips or Straws. I can't go crazy with them, but one serving (40 chips) is about 170 calories. I cut that…

I put a little salt on it when I'm eating it by itself but I don't crazy with it. I've also cooked it with chicken broth but I wasn't crazy about that. I like some of the herb suggestions I've seen above, so I may try those.

I started out just taking one in the morning, but after a few days I started taking one in the late afternoon just prior to my workout. I didn't have any problems getting to sleep. However, I think I may have a fairly high caffeine tolerance since I drink black tea in the evenings without any problems. As far as the…

My trainer recommended it and I used it. I was doing pretty well on my own, but this sent my metabolism into overdrive. I dropped nearly 20 pounds in 4 weeks. Of course, I work out twice a day and maintain a diet of approximately 1200 calories per day, so don't expect those results if you aren't putting in the work. Your…

Yes, it's been happening to me a lot lately. I'm up 2 lbs from Monday, and I was up 2 lbs even then, so I'm really up 4 lbs from my low weight! I know very well that I have maintained a lot more than a 500 calorie deficit between my BMR and my food intake every single day, so I haven't done anything to gain. Water…

You might consider purchasing a couple of resistance bands. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to store away, and they are quite versatile for strength training. I like the ones that I bought at the sporting goods store that's name rhymes with Mick's (MFP won't let me enter the name because it thinks it's obsene). They…

I use vanilla whey powder in smoothies. The Abs Diet book contains several excellent smoothie recipes, all of which call for whey powder. I occasionally use chocolate whey powder in a few ounces of skim milk as a protein shake after a hard strength workout. I never take whey powder on its own. I agree with the poster who…

I probably let mine go too long. I wait until I'm no longer in "fat burning" zone. Since I tend to continue my workouts even after I get home from the gym by taking the dog for walks, I often just pause it when it gets below the zone and restart it after I start walking again.

Same for me, including the place I purchased it and the price. Just a warning: These things are evil! When I found out how much I was actually burning in calories compared to what I thought I was burning, I was appalled! I started pushing myself harder to get a better calorie burn with each workout. After I bought the USB…

One thing I try to do when I use the rowing machine is what my trainer has me do when we are strength training: When I pull back I try to squeeze my scapulas together. It makes it harder for me and really increases the pull I'm getting.

There's a lot that I like, and most of them I eat raw, like oranges, strawberries, apples, plums. I add strawberries to smoothies that I make. I also use a frozen "berry medley" (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries) for smoothies as well. I add blueberries to cereal, oatmeal and plain yoghurt all the time. I'm looking…

Partially before. It's usually after breakfast but before lunch. I tend to eat the same things for breakfast and lunch during the week at work, so that helps. I also long the snacks I'm going to have at work. That's easy because again, I'm taking the same things and I try not to eat extra things. If I know what I'm going…

MFP's elliptical burn rates are way too high. I find that even the elliptical's estimates are too high, compared to my heart rate monitor. MFP is about 3 to 4 times as high as the HRM. I find that I burn about 25 - 35 calories in 5 minutes according to my HRM. Of course, that's factoring in my weight and age, both of which…
-
I find MFP is way high on elliptical burns. It's about 200-300 calories more than what the machine says, and about 400-500 higher than my HRM. If I ate back all those exercise calories I'd be gaining weight now.

The first time I got on it I think I managed about one minute, That was last June. I was having a lot of issues with plantar fascitis, and that ligament was absolutely screaming at me to stop. But I kept trying and I gradually worked my way up, and now it's great--definitely my primary form of cardio. I did 71 minutes this…

A lot of mine are in bags, though I need to pull out the rest of them and then find a place to donate them.
