  • I suppose I meant that my diet didn't have the "Anabolic Diet" title attached to it, but it after looking at the basic tenets of the anabolic diet, it is exactly the same as what I'm doing. I'd be surprised if people following this diet don't enter light ketosis by the end of the week. it even has a 12 day induction period…
  • I'm doing basically this (a cyclical ketogenic diet). keep carbs low (5-10%) for the week, and carb up on weekends for energy throughout the week. I've been doing a straight ketogenic diet (think Atkins, Dukan) for about 4 months, and switched to the above once I plateaued. I've enjoyed a ton of weight loss, about 30 lbs,…
  • This sounds right—whenever I have my cheat meals on the weekends, I usually go up a couple of pounds, then drop back down a couple of days back into the diet. water weight should be your primary suspect. remember, all things equal, a pound is 3500 calories. do you really think you ate THAT much extra over the weekend? This…
  • I haven't been recording hardcore for the last couple of weeks, but you can take a look at mine. For the last couple of months, I've been following a cyclical ketogenic diet--a diet where I eat low (5-10%) carbs on weekdays and carb up for energy on the weekends. Honestly, once I got over the stigma of not eating grains, I…
  • loving the idea of doubling the recipe, covering with cheese and baking... that sounds awesome! might give this a try tomorrow. Not sure how low you are trying to keep your carb intake to, but if you're a real stickler, watch things like skim milk--they tend to have more carbs per serving than the fattier equivalent.
  • howabout this one: http://www.healthyindulgences.net/2009/05/healthy-chocolate-cake-with-secret.html I won't ruin the surprise, but it's chocolate cake. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks incredible... Other staples for me (warning, cauliflower-heavy :) include: garlic mashed cauliflower with cheese and bacon, spinach…
  • chocolate... all kinds. in particular, reeses cups and toblerone... god easter was tough :)
  • nice trick. I just added fiber to my 'nutrients tracked' and subtract that from my carb number (in my head) at the end of the day.
  • oh man. I'm a big time bacon slut. Hearty thick cut bacon all the way. not too crunchy, but tender, leaning toward crunchy. I'm of the mind that if you're going to do something, you do it right :)
  • you're eating SUPER clean, I wouldn't worry about it.
  • Not sure why the previous poster said as cultures get wealthier they eat more grains and less meat -- it is definitely the other way around. In fact, part of the reason grains are so prevalent today is because they are cheap to make and easy to transport long distances without worry of spoilage. People should watch out for…
  • Good tips, Russell. Just wanted to throw out another site for those interested: simplyshredded.com It's nice because they have interviews with fitness models and bodybuilders that provide sample workouts and diet.
  • I don't know if this technically counts, but I've made pickles before and thrown a couple of jalapenos in, along with a habanero... wow! those pickles were BLAZING hot! :) back on topic: I like putting chopped jalapenos and pepperjack cheese in burgers before grilling...soo good
  • I'm of the DIY mindset, but here's my take on these programs: they work, but will work just the same as MFP does if you put in just a bit more effort. WW works because you count 'points', and have a set number of 'points' per day. This is no different than calorie counting, just adding in a middle-man. Flat Belly program…
  • here's a good thread: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=121703981 (warning: wall of text) The third calculator, Katch-McArdle, is the most accurate, but assumes a solid understanding of body fat percentage. The other two will work fine though. They are of course estimations, so watch your weight fluctuations…
  • Yes, eat at maintenance level. You'll probably have to play with that number for a couple of weeks to see what your maintenance truly is. edit: also, not sure what side of the fence you are with on this one, but I'd suggest continuing to eat whatever you set your macros at. It seems that this is a point of contention on…
  • I've been on a diet similar to what paleo advocates for the last 4 months, and I've lost about 25 pounds. I can understand that this diet may not suite everyone (the diet can become difficult if you go out to eat a lot, for example), but any plan which advocates taking a large portion of sugar out of a person's diet is…
  • This is false. The brain and central nervous system require energy, which is most readily received from glucose (carbs). In the absence of carbohydrates, the body will use ketone bodies, derived from fat. I completely agree with the second point though.
  • This is a very good approach (re: C/P/F ratio [and how I do it as well]). Don't use the ratios as a crutch. These ratios should be tools to aid in YOUR SPECIFIC journey of weight loss. If something isn't working, don't be afraid to react to these tools, and modify if necessary. my 2p
  • Seconded! I have a friend getting her masters in nutrition science, and I have heard so many stories of data poisoning it isn't even funny (her thesis included). amazing what kind of faulty scientific findings people will publish when money comes into the equation.
  • That 5% is net carbs--meaning, I'm subtracting carbs counted from fiber. I get plenty of veggies in the form of broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, spinach, etc (not lately if you look at my food diary -- whoops), but I don't do dairy usually; cheese being the exception. Also, these are soft percentages... I really wish…
  • Just readjusted mine: 5/40/55 Carbs/Protein/Fat I've been readjusting Carbs/Protein as weight has been dropping to keep carbs under 20-30g and protein at or around .9 x weight, with fat making up the remainder.
  • nkenga is right -- our bodies put other metabolic processes on hold in favor of alcohol. here is a good thread from another forum that details alcohol effects on the body: http://www.simplyshredded.com/forums/topic/1367-alcohol-facts-for-the-people-who-wonder/

  • I like this thread. I confess, a couple of years ago when my father was on this diet I thought a lot of the things that many people now think: a high fat diet can't be healthy, you're going to have a heart attack any second, this goes against everything I've been taught, etc. However: on my weight loss journey, I've been…
  • Fad diets only fail if, once finished, you go back to eating the way you ate before the diet. This of course can be said of any diet. Marline, I just started doing something similar to the Atkins Diet/South Beach/low carb diets in earnest (just a general ketogenic diet, raising carbs up slowly once I've hit my goal). Good…
