  • Wow- big change in thirty days. Keep it up!
  • In all fairness, not all of them. Just the ones that want to live past the age of 40....... There is a relationship between the foods we eat and our health. Don't get me wrong, I'm no food nazi. Many of us like cookies, cakes, and potato chips, etc. But if I eat that stuff as a large chunk of my daily diet I feel crappy.…
  • Yep, bodybuilders have a saying: "abs are made in the kitchen" (Not that I've ever seen mine)

  • Big eater too. And I am a night eater. My maintenance is 3000 calories/day. I normally diet on about 2000 cals/day. If I don't have 1000 calories when I sit down at the dinner table I get nervous A decent size meal for me has at least 600 calories and I'm much happier with 800. Then there is at least one, if not two snacks…
  • It seems to me that shakes fall into two categories, supplemental and meal replacement. Supplemental tend to be higher protein and lower fat/carb, the meal replacement take a more balanced approach with other macronutrients. If you eat a bunch of crap you're probably already getting plenty of carbs and fat, so I'd say look…
  • 140 calories for a slice of cheese pizza is on the low side IMO, Maybe one of those .99 jeno's pizza in the freezer section, but I guarantee you no self respecting pizza joint is selling 140 calorie slices. A decent sized hand tossed slice can easily be over 300 calories. Look at the calorie counts on little ceasers or…

  • I'm thiking the opposite. It's three hours before bedtime and I'm nearly out of calories. I'm thinking about going and running a 5K in the dark so I can come back and have a slice of cake :).
  • Technically you should lose scale weight if you eat a caloric deficit. However, you're VERY low on protein, which could potentially affect you body composition- even if you lose weight you could end up skinny fat. Muscle needs protein. Also, are you gonna eat this way the rest of your life? At one point you're gonna have…
  • Yeah, you had me at "peanut butter" :)
  • I use crystal light lemonade mix. It tastes just like regular lemon yogurt. Other sugar free flavors work too. My latest mad scientist concoction is plain lowfat greek yogurt, vanilla whey powder, and/or sugar free vanilla coffee syrup, a few frozen Strawberries and a little fiber one cereal for some crunch.
  • BMR=Basal metabolic rate= what your body needs to sustain vital function at rest- If you stayed in bed all day your body would need this many calories to keep the blood pumping and keep you at your temperature. BMR does not include exertion of any form.

  • Calorie deficit over the longer term is what is important.. If you need to eat a little over your allowance but it helps keep you from compleltly falling off the wagon and heading for the Chinese buffet, then eat a little- just try not to do it every day.
  • one cup of fiber one cereal (the one that looks like rabbit food) plus vanilla whey protein shake instead of milk. That combo give me 30 grams of protein and 28 grams of fiber for 250 calories.
  • I've seen paleo/primal eaters refer to some other similar symptoms that last a couple of weeks after going low carb. They call it a "carb flu". They advise to be patient, your body is adjusting to burning fat for a primary fuel source. They claim once you get through it you'll feel better than ever. You might want to…
  • There is a lot of healthy protein out there, but if you're trying to keep protein intake high and losing weight at the same time the caloric content can be an issue. Calorie for calorie it's hard to beat animal products, like a piece of grilled chicken breast. Cabo Lowfat 2% greek yogurt has 22 G of protein in 150…
  • It seems like liquid shakes come in two forms, the "meal replacment" type, and the "protein booster" type. The latter usually has fewer calories. Most of the shakes I use contain about 130-140 calories and provide at least 20 gs of protein. Many protein shakes can be mixed with water instead of milk. That saves you at…
  • Aww com'on guys! Candy bar cakes and SALAD? Did Paula Deen take over this website? (gotta admit it sounds pretty tempting)
  • Mine was in upper seventies, now usually 56-68 bpm.
  • Kudos to you. Helping her reach her teen years and a transition into healthy lifestyle when she leaves the nest is one of the best things you can do for her. How about a little dog that needs DAILY walks?. Just a thought......
  • Com'on OP your're from the south. Chick-Fil-A nuggets FTW.
  • I'm obsessed with the app also. I've been overweight my entire life and this little app has helped me out. I know I've got to learn to eat without consulting it one day. I'm hoping that after a year or so the habits become so ingrained in me that it's not a problem. I have been on caloric maintenance about five weeks and…
  • Nope, not a bit.. Many people here feel MFP set to default settings is light on protein. Protein is very beneficial. It is satisfying and will help retain lean body mass while on a calorie restricted diet. IMO, Fat is OK to go over too, as long as it is a healthy fat such as olive oil. Carbs, on the other hand, are the…
  • Mine too. Although I probably eat twice as much. This community is awesome for little meal and snack tips!
  • Chocolate keeps me on my diet without turning me into a homicidal maniac. The voices inside my head find just one or two dove milk promises are a good way to kill my chocolate craving. For some reason I find it much more satisfying that other fun size candy bars. I usually have one at bedtime. They're about 40 cals each…
  • If you have a long term perspective and it doesn't discourage you into giving up, no permanent harm done. You will likely weigh more tomorrow than the fat you have truly gained. When your body stores 1 g of glycogen I believe it stores 3 gs of water. You will lose this water weight when you burn off that glycogen surplus.…
  • Get a scale. Measure everything. Record anything that has any calories, even a tic-tac. The scale is not as important when you eat packaged food, but guesstimating can shoot people in the foot real quick. If you're off on your count 120 calories daily, that's a pound a month in missed weight loss.
  • Hey Jim, I just came from where you are. I weighed about 315 last January. I made it down to 215 My advice- Take it slow, set a reasonable goal of about 2 lbs per week. Have a (reasonable) cheat meal once per week, and design a diet you can live with for an entire year. You will loose some muscle mass. Try to minimize that…
  • My advice: be patient. Plan a diet you can live with for months if you have to. Have an occasional cheat meal. Don't torture yourself. When people are in misery dieting and have a bad weigh in, they can loose hope and just give up. You'll get there, slow and steady wins the race.
  • Net is the food you have consumed minus the exercises calories. If you have a negative net you have exercised off more calories than you have consumed. MFP allows you to "eat" your calories back (if you like) that you have exercised off. Eating them back is a personal decision that will slow your weight loss down. However,…
