Primarily it's to track steps and exercise to improve my status within my health insurer's incentive scheme, but I'd quite like to introduce some degree of heart-rate-based training to my running, indoor rowing, and possibly cycling too. Really though, I'm after comparative reviews of Garmin vs Polar from users who've had…

I'm sorry to hear that, Detritus. Thanks for posting - I hadn't heard of Myocarditis before you shared that. For anyone else, here's one of the first articles I found on the subject:- http://www.dw.com/en/when-sports-are-bad-and-threaten-the-heart/a-16309687 It sounds like a very serious illness which can have fatal, or…

Well done. Awesome job.

Hi there. Thanks for the replies and advice. Not sure what stats you need. I'm 38, 188cm (6'2") tall, weigh 97kg (15 St 4lb), chest 46", waist 39". Not sure what else to add! In terms of what's changed to prompt my rethink, it was just failure to improve at the gym led to a sudden concern I was losing all my muscle! I've…

I wasn';t sure myself so looked it up - It is *technically a breach of the law and liable for a fixed Penalty Notice - so, akin to a speeding fine, BUT... "Fortunately, when FPNs were introduced for pavement cycling in 1999, Home Office Minister Paul Boateng issued guidance saying that: "The introduction of the fixed…

Plug in your stats to MFP, and eat so that you stay close to and under the amount it recommends for you. YMMV, but I've had the best results when I didn't stress about Paleo, or any thing that complicates the fundamental principle of counting my calories.

Well done. That sounds like a great start. As someone who's tried exercise for weight-loss before, can I suggest changing your mindset. I never found exercise lost me much weight - it definitely gave a LOT of other benefits and I go to the gym most week days, so I'm not saying stop exercising. It's just, for me, (and a lot…

This thread is hilarious. OP: I have this set of circumstances that are physically impossible. MFP: Let us help you find the mistake you're making OP: No. The circumstances are as physically impossible as I have described. OP, I'm not sure what you want us to say? Perhaps, "Please send your magical calorie fairy to those…

You've said elsewhere that this conversation is going around in circles, but that is because of a mistake you are making. People are trying to help you find that mistake - most of us (I think) agree that it's most likely to be that you are mistaken about how many calories you're actually consuming (based on the fact that…

Thanks for the reply. I still think you're under-counting the amount of calories you're consuming, and this remains by far the most plausible explanation for the situation. Whether your metabolism is fast or slow, basic body function requires an amount of calories daily, which I understand is the Base Metabolic Rate. As…

Thanks for posting that - pretty interesting. I note that, far from receiving no nutrition the patient in that case received a fair bit, far more in line with what people have said in response to the OP in this thread:- "During the 382 days of his fast, vitamin supplements were given daily as 'Multivite' (BDH), vitamin C…

I'm no expert, but as I understand it, the body requires a certain amount of calories just to function - even if you lay on a bed all day. I believe this figure is more than 700 calories for anyone regardless of size/age/etc. Therefore if you only consumed 700 calories a day you would lose weight. Any sustained length of…

[edited by mods] I'm intrigued about the OP's case - I cannot believe the body can go that long without any nutrition whatsoever - in fact the articles above suggest that after just a month there is a serious risk of organ failure. What I really don't understand is not the how, but the why - why would drs without nutrition…

That "20s on; 10s off" suggests it's based on Tabata HIIT protocol. Tabata's pretty well regarded, and has strong scientific credentials, but - you've hit the nail on the head, when you say HIIT's for "athletes who already had a very strong base of fitness" - Tabata was tested on Japanese International Speed Skaters if I…

I think you should go and see a doctor - i think dizziness and undue breathlessness are things you should get investigated before increasing your exercise volume.

I'm not expert, and everyone's different, but I don't agree with the phrase "technically underweight". Presumably you mean that, according to one method of measurement, you are deemed "underweight". That's only as good as the method you've used, and they vary massively in terms of what value they have. It sounds like…

I know a lot of you Americans consider our NHS here in the UK a commie abomination, but the thought of calling an ambulance being a tough moral decision is almost incomprehensible to me. It sounds like that guy was lucky you were there. Well done.
-
Everyone's different. I'm no expert. With those 2 caveats out the way, I'll offer you my thoughts and experience... I go nuts doing the same thing day after day. I also only get 30 mins in the gym each day. I love to measure my progress in anything. For all those reasons I made myself a 4 week program of a different…

If I recall correctly the original pioneers of BMI developed purely as a tool for measuring large populations and never intended such a blunt instrument to be applied to the analysis of individuals. It's a very basic formula so I'd expect it to be inaccurate at one or both ends of the bell-curve if not throughout the whole…

Fair play for trying to persevere. I still have a near-full pack of stevia-sweetened protein in a cupboard. Tried it for 3 days, then ordered more of my usual stuff. For me, going from considering my shake a lunchtime treat, to choking it down, was too big a risk. I could easily see myself giving up in misery if I tried to…

Is there a name for the "4 count" part in the middle of the 8 count body builder? Starting from a squatting position with your hands on the floor, jumping your legs back so that you going to the starting position of a press-up, then jumping your feet apart out in to a splayed position, then doing it all in reverse - feet…

Very funny. :p

LOL. I know whatever I said I'd get "burpees" as the answer! I know they're good - they feel so awful they must be - but it's for a gym workout. I'm trying to select 5 exercises I can suffer through relatively discreetly. I've switched out situps for bicycles because they'll be a similar rate to the others. Tricep dips and…

Another user of protein powder here. It's what I have for lunch, after my gym session. Flavours and "mixability" vary a lot, so I'd suggest that it's worth reading reviews and trying a few. I love the "Natural Chocolate" flavour I have at the moment - I mix with water, and it actually feels like a treat - that alone makes…

The powers that be had a laugh today and programmed a HIIT rowing workout for me today as punishment for my earlier comments no doubt. I still just cannot see how anyone can say they enjoy HIIT. If you look at a measure of exercise intensity like Rate of Perceived Exertion, HIIT is pretty much by definition unenjoyable.…
-
So everyone talking about enjoying HIIT was actually talking about IT without the HI. That makes a lot more sense. I like interval training too. I still also do HIIT because of its benefits but wouldn't ever say I enjoy it.
-
I'm no expert, but I agree with Stanmann - I can't envisage a HIIT workout that isn't horrible. I do a bit of HIIT on the rowing machine. It's the routine that is most likely to make me vomit. I agree that different people like different things. Some people might like to vomit. I've yet to meet one.
-
@hesn92 - I get hungry a bit every now and again, but it's not that bad. Usually I have an apple and/or a banana on hand for those moments. Brian, funny you should say that - yesterday and today I had programmed some rowing, and both days I've felt like I had no energy at all. I'm thinking I need to moderate my performance…

Thanks for the replies. Reassuring. I wouldn't want to cut out too many effervescent isotonic b-vitamin drinks from my weekly intake.
-
Hi. Thanks for the replies. I've been at it for 3 weeks and haven't suffered any discernable problems, with hunger, or otherwise - I'd be eager to keep it as my method of hitting calorie targets. I was just worried in case it might be causing problems. I vaguely remember reading that some things could put your body into…
