Once you learn how to pee on the bike, life becomes so much easier :) And yup, black shorts always helps.

You get bored on flats? Oh boy. Get ready to be *really* bored at IMAC :) I did it as the full-distance Challenge race both years. Flat doesn't even begin to describe this course. I did enjoy the run on the boardwalk though. Lot's of fun, a great "easy" surface to run on and the locals are hilarious because they have no…

Stopping to pee is wasted time! ;) Seriously though, congrats! Glad you were able to make it through and finish well!

Well even if you don't want to read it, I am going to post it anyway: Pre-race stuff: The day before a race, at least in my opinion, should be all about light activities and generally trying to get some rest. That never, ever, seems to happen. There is always a ton of running around to do, gathering things, set ups,…

I am *SO* glad you had a good time! This really is one of my favorite races of all time. Rev3 puts on a great event, and this was no different. If you are interested in my race report from the half I would be happy to share it.

Hey @sarahz5 how did your race go?
-
Yea, that about sums it up

Open water or pool swim? If open water is it a lake, river or ocean? Can you swim in open water? Mainly my concern with first timers is the swimming (open water) aspect. Almost anyone can bike a little and run a little, but the swim is the place people run into trouble.

This is the ONLY acceptable addition to coffee
-
Black. Stop putting crap into your coffee.
-
Your non-swimming friends would then only need to know you went swimming. Anything more than that is sure to confuse them since they probably don't have a concept of what a length even means :)
-
This is the correct way anyway. When discussing a swim workout it is appropriate to say you did, for example 4000 yards total as a descending ladder set of 100/200/300/400/500/400/300/200/100 with a 1000 warmup and 500 cooldown. Or something like that. You might even add that you did that in a SCY pool (vs SCM or LCM)…

The 910 will not do heart rate in the water. The 920 will if you get the specific HRM Swim model. However I personally feel that knowing your heart rate in the water is somewhat useless. It won't tell you all that much, and the calculation you get for calorie burn would be pretty far off from reality anyway. I do believe…
-
The bolded part is perfectly normal and expected. You might feel like you are dying in the water and your heart is going to burst out of your chest, but in terms of absolute rate it will be way lower than running or cycling.
-
Any normal human being would say a lap of a pool end where you start. However in swimmer parlance, a lap and a length are the same thing. Yes, it is "incorrect" that the term "lap" to a swimmer ends at the other side of the pool, yet that is how the terminology is used. Regardless no competitive swimmer ever talks about…

You gotta build up to it. You can't just go out one day and expect to be able to run well in the heat. Like anything else, you have to build slowly into it. Also it depends on what I am doing that day. If I am just running a straight endurance run, I will likely plan to do it when it is hot out to purposely work on heat…

Awesome. I am curious to see if your assessment of the course is at all like mine.

Racing Pocono Oly? Sweet! I am racing the half there. Since I just rode the course this past weekend I will give you a fresh-in-my-mind blow by blow of the bike course: T1 is at Smithfield Beach. You will mount your bike and ride the beach access road to the ranger station. There is a speed bump there so just keep your…

Did you ever decide on a tuneup race? Pocono? Steelman?
-
You do 7000 yard swim workouts as a matter of routine? Wow.
-
The amount of money I have spent on triathlon and cycling-related gear is absurd.
-
Agreed!

Before: A dump During: Water and gels (if long enough to warrant it) After: Beer

Even the cat 4/5 race is going to be sustaining well over 20mph for a course that short. Are you able to do that? What sort of bike do you have? Races like this require a drop-handle road bike. Hybrids wouldn't be permitted.
-
Yea that would be me. I have done a few crits and they are a lot of fun, but all of my bike focus has been on time trialing. I have no trouble rolling a <1:00 40k TT, but put me in a cat 4/5 road race and I will just barely be able to hang in the peloton.
-
I didn't think they were allowed to do that? I didn't think you were allowed to register as a lower category. I am not super familiar with road cycling races. Only have done a few (I am a tri guy mainly), so I don't know all the various rules.
-
He would have to enter as a cat 5. 17 miles sounds too long to be a crit. I am assuming this is a road race that is 5x 3.3 mile laps. One thing to be careful about is in cases like this they will usually pull you off course if you get lapped. If your main concern is the distance itself, I should warn you there will be some…

For cycling a chamois cream like Assos or Chamois Butt'r is going to work better than Body Glide

That's not what he is complaining about though. It's the other thing in his pants...

I think it's the "trigger warning" part. Not even sure what you mean by that.
