I saw that... and question what that even means. Unless he is nearly Olympic-level competitive, I find it hard to believe he is burning 2000 calories per session simply due to the volume required. My rough calculations based on my own experience as a solid long distance swimmer (I can swim sub-hour at an Ironman) indicate…

What sort of volume are you doing to burn that much? For me, swimming at around 1:30/100m it will easily take me around 5000m to get to around 1000 calories. All rough calculations off my Garmin. Are you trying to tell me you are doing 2hr swims, or 10km per session?

I currently use Training Peaks and I find it to be an incredibly valuable tool. I haven't used any of the other ones. My TP account is a premium account that my coach uses to provide me with all my training, and he gets all my feedback through there.

30 meter pool? That is a bizarre length

While I prefer the outdoors I don't mind the treadmill in the slightest. Ran 21.5 miles (2.5hrs) on my treadmill during my build for Boston not too long ago. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. TV/Netflix helps a ton. Then again it was "only" 2.5hrs whereas I have spent 4+ hours before on my bike trainer. So I am just…

Although about cycling, Greg LeMond said "It never gets easier, you just go faster". When I started running I could comfortably sustain 11 minute miles, 10:00/mi felt like tempo and I could maybe run 9:00 pace for a 5k and felt like I was going to die at the end. I would feel like I was plodding along at 12:00/mi Now I run…

Some pools will have signs out indicating which lanes are for which speeds. If that is the case be honest with yourself and pick the correct lane. Observe what everyone else is doing. More than two swimmers to a lane and they are circling? Follow suit. I wouldn't worry about announcing your presence in a circle swimming…

"Sh-- Happens" Every runner has been there. Don't worry about it.

I do love that chart. I can throw down a solid 4.5w/kg at threshold which puts me in the mid Cat2 range but my best ever top-end sprint only just cracked 1100 watts, which only puts me in the cat3 range there. Not surprising since I train for Ironman (all about long and low) vs something like crit racing which is all about…

You would be surprised how much power can come from smaller people if they are trained for it. My FTP is 300 watts and I weigh in at 145lbs most days. Normally when I am out for a easy, comfortable hour ride I'll aim for 200 watts. If I am racing a full Ironman I am targeting 210 or so for the 5 hours I am riding (23ish…

For what it's worth averaging 200 watts for an hour will only burn 720 calories.

If my pool was 86 degrees I would pass out before I finished my warmup! Yikes. <80 is way better

Something is wrong if you are capable of a solid marathon but "can't" ride more than 12mph. What gearing are you using? Do you have idea of what your cadence is? What kind of bike do you have?
-
This is a common method of dismounting a bike quickly in a triathlon or cyclocross race

This, x100 I am happy when I encounter other runners out on the trails with me, regardless of size. In fact I can't remember the last time I even thought anything about a larger person running other than "hello fellow runner".

Plenty of us around here... We are the ones over in the corner not paying any attention to that talk about lifting things, picking things up and putting them down, etc. I have 6 full Ironmans under my belt, and countless shorter races. I'll be headed to IM #7 at Lake Placid in July.
-
I have no advice. Only wished to say welcome to the obsession :) What sort of bike do you have? If you can, go see a bike fitter for an actual evaluation on your riding position. Not much we can tell you over the interwebs.

I have learned to embrace the suck. I don't mind doing my long runs on the treadmill anymore. Longest I have ever gone was 2:10 for 18 miles.
-
Yes but the physics of it is still undeniable. To burn almost 1000 calories in an hour you are looking at clocking something on the order of 6:00/mi pace. Guessing you aren't doing that. The more likely interpretation is that the treadmill is being VERY generous. I know my treadmill will easily report a 1000 calorie burn…

True I was running 30-40 miles a week in prep for that Ironman, so I had plenty of run base. It was also my second Ironman of the year following Challenge Atlantic City in June. Regardless, the aerobic volume needed to do a half ironman is on par with what you need for marathon training. The question is can your body…

One more data point. Years ago when I did my first half Ironman (and was still a triathlon newbie), I ran the Baltimore marathon for a PR only 2 weeks later. I purposely structured my half Ironman training to include enough run miles to get me through that marathon.
-
I have done this a bunch of times and it is no big deal if you get a decent recovery and you have enough time for a few more weeks of training. With 9 weeks you certainly have time. Just last year I did the Beach2Battleship full distance race on October 17th (where I ran 3:24 as part of a 9:57 total time), took about 10…

Awesome report. Thanks! Glad you had fun. The swim issues were reminiscent of the 2014 Challenge AC Full. You guys were going to swim out to what us CAC2014ers have dubbed the "treadmill buoy". Plenty of us got stuck swimming at it for 10-20 minutes making zero progress. The report I heard from standing around the…

I guess I have to ask again! How did IM AC go for you? It was your first half right? I happened to hear the announcer shout out your name as you got into the water. That must have been pretty cool. I was out there for a good part of the day on the boardwalk cheering you guys on. I have the worst headache and sunburn from…

The Gatorade bottles will fit in your cage. As you approach an aid station, you will see signs that say "drop trash here" or something to that effect. This is the place to ditch your old bottle. As you get closer to the volunteers, slow WAY down and yell out what you need. Reach out for the bottle and just close your hand…

Peanut butter and jelly (like 1 tablespoon of each).

If you feel the need to do this to give yourself the mental boost of knowing you are capable of doing it, then it can be valuable. It is not physiologically useful though. You are always better off squeezing in as much quality work for your time as you can. Running for 60+ minutes off of a significant bike workout is not…

Not all drivers are considerate unfortunately. However I have logged tens of thousands of miles riding on the roads and to be honest if I encounter 1 real jerk of a driver for every 200 miles I ride, I would say that is a lot. I ride on mostly rural roads with low traffic, however. I suspect if you were to ride in a more…

My wife and a bunch of my friends are racing IMAC so I will be there. Since it is 2 weeks before Ironman Maryland, that day is likely going to be my last big run. I'll probably have a 22mi run on my schedule for that morning which I intend to knock out really early on the boardwalk. Then I can get busy drinking all the…
