I agree with cwolfman13 but you should also pay attention to hydration. Make sure you are drinking the water you need before and after your workouts. It takes a while to get through the beginning pains of a running program, but you will eventually notice the pain is less and less. I use to get terrible shin splints and…

I did something like this and wound up with a New Balance HRM as well (a Duo Sport). I loved it because the estimates on MFP and even the machines at the gym were off. Some more so than others. I love the one I have and I happen to find mine at a Costco liquidator, but I loved it so much I bought one on Amazon for a friend…

I had shin splints pretty bad in the beginning too, as well as occasional Charley-horses in my calf muscles. The only thing I found that help with either was consuming more water than I thought possible. I realize this makes sense for the muscle issue, but it also reduced my shin splints if I drank 8-16 oz about an hour…

Try not to weigh yourself right after a workout, as your muscles have a tendency to swell with water (that you are hopefully hydrating yourself with). This was a suggestion my doctor gave me and for me, it seemed to be correct because by the next morning it (my weight) was down again.
