  • So many difficult to quantify variables at play here: genetics, intensity, duration, hydration levels, body fat distribution. Keep that "years" goal in your mind and be pleased with anything sooner. Good to have a marathon over sprint mindset. I saw a noticeable difference after ~90 days, but was near my goal weight and at…
  • Check out this thread: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10767046/hypothyroidism-and-weight-management/p1 I didn't cut out anything and implemented a modest caloric deficit and lost 60 lbs the first year with MFP and have been in maintenance for the last 5 years.
  • Congratulations!!! My wife stayed at maintenance and fueled her TRX workouts up until the day before delivering. Just anecdotal evidence, but your plan is sound. Just keep your medical providers aware and even show them your MFP data. Medical professionals do much better with data rather than subjective feelings. Medicine…
  • This is a known human factor and how we chase aesthetics over reason. If a product is priced too low it loses the luster of being an "exclusive" product. A friend owns a specialized audio company and started marketing small, high quality amplifiers at low prices and almost went out of business. He engaged a marketing…
  • There's a key problem in that the sum of misinformation/disinformation is also in your hands. Without specialized training, which is lacking in the common curriculum, one lacks the ability to distinguish between what is fact and what is false. To complicate this there exists a philosophy that rejects the existence of…
  • Accuracy in this case isn't as relevant as precision. To be as precise as possible measurements should be taken early in the morning post-voiding and pre-eating/drinking. The impact of age is going to be minimal and any attempt to correct bias is much more likely to create bias. Depending on the variance of participants a…
  • There are several elite level athletes with hypothyroidism. There's nothing to fear. Pay no attention to the internet woo out there.
  • My MFP and Untappd records say yes.

  • Check out this thread: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10767046/hypothyroidism-and-weight-management/p1 I didn't cut out anything and implemented a modest caloric deficit, but I did have a total thyroidectomy and was supplemented with Synthroid. What are the results of your thyroid panel?
  • I would agree. I'm a long term investor, but I did dabble in short term trading by picking up fitness firms around November when the seasonal price is predictably low, and selling in February/March when the shares are high. It's a bit different with gyms as people like the image of belonging to a positive community, so…
  • A college roommate used to pour milk on the previous night's popcorn. It was actually pretty good. This is actually historical tradition until other foods moved in as traditional breakfast foods.
  • I'm hoping that this was playing in the background: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRh0QiXyZSk
  • The ONLY was in reference to the sustainability of counting and in the context of inviting risk, specifically a rationale not to log. Not in reference to weight management. Never stated that those are the only two options to manage weight, but that you implement a greater degree of inaccuracy when you don't log and track…
  • It requires a level of intimacy to be effective. I don't volunteer information unless asked or already in a conversation. There's an art to it though and you have to venture forward slowly, especially when challenging "known" information. I bookmark information to debunk many of these myths, such as slow/fast metabolism,…
  • Keep your germs to yourself. What likely has the greatest impact is fresh air. Bacteria (pathogens especially) thrive in a relatively narrow band of temperature and humidity. Most will die simply by a rapid change to their environment. Walking to the car and breathing cold, fresh air has more impact than working out. Open…
  • I realize why people think that calorie counting isn't sustainable, but this is true only if you believe that eating at maintenance is intuitive, which is an outright fallacy. I'm not sure why the resistance to tracking, especially with the advent of smartphone and apps ala MFP. It takes minutes a day to log this. ...and I…
  • Depending on the brand sunlight lamp bulbs visibly brighten up spaces Like many things there isn't much to quantify, but there's a reason behind design and why rooms with more windows & skylights brighten moods.
  • He's bombastic, but he's correct in his underlying position that our lives are the consequences of our behavior. The cursing just doesn't come off as authentic though and just doesn't work - think he's attempting to mimic other motivational speakers (Gary Vaynerchuk), but it doesn't come off well. I read him as a new…
  • I'm always suspicious of this, but given the Peloton executives I doubt it. Their target demographic is similar to the Lexus audience.
  • The notion behind this is that you feel full from all that water and won't eat as much - increasing the potential to create a caloric deficit. Water intake has little to do with weight management - other than the fact one should stay hydrated, which really isn't an issue in the Western world. I get the rationale behind not…
  • I used a "sunlight" bulb in a reef aquarium and noticed the difference in brightness and used these bulbs in the basement more for aesthetics than anything. I don't believe I've ever experienced any other effects, but there is likely a strong placebo effect which stimulates a positive feedback loop.
  • We have become addicted to outrage and envy.
  • Popcorn, baked chicken, eggs, and oatmeal are my go to fillers when I want to feel full. That and I've been doing a lot more reading at night instead of watching shows. It's hard to munch and read.
  • I'll struggle with this for the rest of my life, but all in all that's a mark of a damn good life. I eat light in the morning and afternoon and save my calories for the evening, figuring my margin of error is safer by doing so. I drink water before/during snacking and I do something active at night. This is a bit of a…
  • Set an alarm to move every hour and walk at least 250 steps, 20 push ups, 20 sit ups, etc. I'm far more efficient when working from home. The office has far too many distractions and side conversations. Still I operate by the same schedule and add some manner of activity every hour.
  • I have a tremendous mistrust of middlemen - someone inserting themselves in a process especially when they cannot show improvement. SW and WW are middlemen that have a bad track record of success and show little or no return on investment. MFP by comparison is a tool. The public enters in data and uses this data to track…
  • It's all good - just need to change your perspective and see the bigger picture. Pretty much the key to life.
  • Yup - water retention. Should even out with proper hydration in 5-7 days. I once put on ~12 lbs following a high sodium meal and back to back Spartan Races - glycogen + sodium.
  • Gotta go with everything. Higher confidence, improved relationships, think sharper/clearer, more focused.
