I focused on what matters - calories. Alot of this learned from watching others and reading up on MFP. I challenged all of what I thought I "knew" - such as "good" and "bad" food choices. I ditched motivation - this is an emotion and comes and goes. Stick with discipline. Discipline is a practice and reinforces habits and…

Late starting this year due to moving and getting everything ready for winter. My oldest son finished hunter safety last weekend and we'll be harvesting squirrels, rabbits, goose, pheasant, duck, turkey, and deer this year. Planning a hog hunt in the spring at my uncle's farm. My wife and daughter will be following suit…

No one does what you are describing. In all legal cases if the hunter doesn't use the meat this is donated to homeless/locals/etc.

I trust the math: 3500 kcals/lb x 5lbs = 17500kcals Did you eat a surplus of 17500 kcals? Yeah it's water weight. High salt, break in routine, vacation stress, hormone shift, etc. Hydrate, get back to your routine, and this should trend to normal in 5-7 days.
-
Inspiring! What I love about stories like this is that your kids witnessed this happen, so they now know that behavior equals results.
-
5-7 days is the normal average. Sodium, hormonal shifts, stress, fiber, hydration - all have direct impact on this, but if you go back to your normal routine it should trend back to normal after a week.

I have no issues sleeping unless there's something unresolved, but that's a mental thing. If I'm hungry I try to eat something full fat or carbs, like ice cream or oatmeal.

There really isn't a medical condition preventing one from losing. There are conditions that cause an increase in water weight, but this is not related to metabolic activity. If you aren't losing and 5-6 weeks have gone by, then you are not in a consistent caloric deficit.

Could just be how you handle it. Shouting "Yeah! This is MY platform!!!" ...and mark your territory.

This is one thing I didn't recognize until preparing Thanksgiving dinner and making cranberry sauce from scratch. It remains one of those just oddbal things that we do - make everything else in a traditional manner, but set a gelatinous mass on a special dish - slice it and serve it. The fact that people have a special…

Blasphemy on a plate.

I think I've seen this and it is shockingly low - as in 50-200 kcals/day resulting in 10-20 lbs gained a year. Considering the CO element this amounts to missing that 60 min of walking/day. What throws most people outside of MFP is that they think "Why aren't people 800+ lbs?" Not realizing that metabolism is primarily…

Find a local bike shop and find a group of mtn bikers. They know all the trails and likely build these trails. Hang out with them, get your kids involved. Draw inspiration from the like-minded. I started out on a base model GT and rode this for over 20 years riding all manner of trails throughout the country. Gear can be…

I've been delving deep into philosophy over the past few years and looking at the various solutions to this. At the core it is nothing more than a shift in perception. You're looking at this as punishment whereas another is looking at this as a precious gift. I've been looking at this as a matter of sacrificing present for…

I never thought about this until losing it after giving up and gaining 70 lbs. Looking back and thinking about everything that exercise has granted me. It enabled me to explore and live in the wilderness for weeks. It enabled me to climb mountains, explore the depths of the the oceans, explore caves, dive under the…

I feel the screams of thousands of college students and young adults first moving out on their own.

100 kcals/day surplus = 36,500 kcals/year = divided by 3,500 kcals/pound = 10 lbs/year

I posted this in another thread but I don't think people understand the magnitude of food abundance and how this exploded in 1950s in comparison to human history. Couple this with the other impact of cheap and abundant energy - decreased physical activity and you then understand the root cause of the problem.

Is it normal - yes. Think of the complexity of motion in ascending stairs. You're engaging a different set of muscles compared to walking/running. You're working against gravity and so expending almost twice the amount of energy. Incorporate more stairs into your life and your body will adjust accordingly.

Sounds like you've set a goal out of alignment with your values. Do some soul searching and strive for something you want to be, not based upon an ideal outside your values. Reset to a new more attainable goal.

Pizza is one of those magical foods - it turns everything you put on it into something better.

Why I love knowing the math behind this - 3,500 kcals/lb. So as @mikepty and all the majority of comments made on this thread - it's just a combination of water and glycogen. Hydrate. Get back to normal and wait 5-7 days and this should trend back to normal.

Forget motivation - this is emotional and fleeting. It's a symptom, not a cause. Start with discipline. I've done a great deal of financial counseling over the years and the question I pose first is "What would you do if you had great wealth?" The vast majority don't know yet - would pay off bills, buy a dream car/house,…

I love this! I prelog at the beginning of my day and if someone does bring extra treats in I think "Nope - no room in the budget for this" or "OK - "I can make room in the budget for this" and adjust accordingly.

The only easy day was yesterday. “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.” Theodore Roosevelt

I find it amazing how quickly children learn the power of "NO" and we seem to forget the power of this word as adults. Order what you want. Eat what you want, but be mindful of the choices you make - the pros and cons, both small and long term.

I would only add to this. Train in your hiking boots and break them in before adding hills, rocks, and elevation. Work a stair climber/stairmaster or similar machine if you can't find someplace to actually hike. A lot of the soreness comes from other places you may not be aware of - switching out socks, changing up lacing,…

It depends. My general physician felt a 2 mm nodule beneath a good deal of scar tissue from a 6 month old neck wound on a routine check up. I was sent to a specialist who even knowing this was there couldn't find it without me showing him where it was and I could only do this as my GP showed me where it was. There are…

Insane. Sounds like some massive lack of communication and just thinking - it's someone else's responsibility. At least this one has a happy ending. This was a common ethical question brought up in the climbing community. Would you stop an ascent attempt to aid another group in need of assistance? Most in Western cultures…
