  • Motivation is an emotion. If you allow emotions to govern your life you had better prepare for a life of chaos and disappointment. Choose discipline. Establish a routine. Set small goals and make sure you hit these. Build these up into habits and behaviors and hold to this. Then set larger goals and repeat the process.
  • Water and glycogen. A shift in hormones. A stressful audit. A salty meal. An unusually rough workout. I've put on over 10 pounds in water within 24 hours. With proper hydration this goes away in 5-7 days.
  • Absolutely! I should have expanded upon this - as these pills are 99% filler there's likely something in the filler you're having a reaction to.
  • One of those things you can only see in hindsight. I hated school until I went to college and talked to other people and what a miserable time they had by comparison. One of my gen ed courses as an undergrad was Communications 101, but instead of just teaching the material our professor and assistants used each module to…
  • This is very common. As you lose weight you should expect TSH to decrease accordingly and ultimately lower your dosage over time.
  • Normally I'm all about the generics - simply because they are cheaper and identical. Synthroid is a bit different to the challenges associated with manufacturing. The safety profile on Synthroid is just better, so if there isn't a price difference - opt for the branded name in this instance.
  • I stick to compound lifts - squats, benchpress, deadlifts, rows mostly and do a little bit of isolation work, mostly triceps.
  • Education may help, but "more is caught than taught", so as @cwolfman13 states the root cause lies more with parental behavior and the growing detachment between schools and families. I grew up in a small town where the best teachers made sure to make real world connections to what was taught and most worked in their…
  • Gold! Also get in push up position and hold it. Planking will help engage your core as well. Make sure you're making the correct movement and pushing with your arms and chest.
  • You're me when I started in 2014. Off to a great start! You'll find the rate of loss will decrease over time, may stall, or increase, but over time you'll see a constant downward trend. People lose a great deal initially largely due to water weight and glycogen, so don't be concerned if the loss stalls for a week or two -…
  • I ditched motivation and went with discipline. Motivation is emotional and fleeting. Discipline is hard at first, but once you see the rewards becomes easier and easier - spreading into other aspects of your life. You stop dreading the hard tasks and rejoice in them. From discpline comes freedom. Start with small changes…
  • Budget in advance for a little increased calories. Fill up on high fiber food or whatever satiates you. Find low calorie options for drinks. I opt for club soda and lime in situations where I can't drink alcohol. The main purpose is to socialize and have fun, so do that. Get to know people outside of work and keep your…
  • Stop posting. Go train.
  • I do the same thing - set my alarm for 5am, take the pill and drink 16 oz water. I now just get up and workout, but yeah - this set a barrier between meals as I don't eat anything until 10am.
  • Your panel looks solid, but your TSI & TG show signs consistent with Grave's - you have a good doctor :) Love to see this number of follow ups and testing. Was this detected early? How long have you had these symptoms? Take this for what it's worth though. I'm only able to go off lab data. If setting caloric intake to low…
  • In comparison to animals, yes. In your example the bigger reward for going against what is in front of your eyes (sacrificing your present for your future) is learned - not innate. I suspect it's more an issue of the rate of abundance: Note the explosion in food production and population following WWII and the conversion…
  • There isn't much data to support coffee or caffeine inhibiting thyroid hormones - the molecules are substantially different and follow separate pathways. It's such a touchy subject and one I tip toe around, which is not my nature. I'm a blunt instrument and resent people not being direct. I recognize that it takes all…

  • Time management gets challenging, which is why I live according to my calendar. Effective communication is key and my wife and I have to continually remind one another where we are and what needs to be done with our own busy lives and three kids with busy lives. I continually remind myself that there are 168 hours in a…
  • Well there's nothing magic about any diet other than sticking to your calorie budget. Are you on levothyroxine? What were the results of your last thyroid panel - TSH, fT3, fT4, rT3? @ElizabethKalmbach brings up a very good point on water weight fluctuations and how fat loss is hidden behind these. Any hormone shift…
  • REI used to have a group finder for this and other outdoor activities. Local gyms, outdoor shops, etc. should have the same. Just use caution, let others know when you leave, who you are with, how long you'll be gone, and when you'll be back. Take photos of others in your group. Read up on the trail you're planning to go…
  • Think of your role in the family - one your kids, spouse, etc need to look up to. One to model behavior from. One who has their stuff together, but can also relax and drop their guard at key moments. Budget in a snack and a drink. If out of budget switch to something like seltzer and lime. You're there for the social…
  • Rejoice and smile! They aren't laughing at you - they are loudly proclaiming at anyone else trying unsuccessfully to forget their own failure. Use it on the next ride and prove them wrong. One of the strongest motivators in my life was having people telling me I couldn't do things. It gave me that push I needed to prove…
  • Here's the link: https://myfitnesspal.desk.com/customer/portal/articles/94191 I experienced the same as I go camping often with no internet/cellular access. I pre-logged my meals and used the tool when I got back to the world.
  • Thinking of the body as a biological system - these systems adapt well under gradual changes - much better than under dramatic changes. Drastic changes result in stress - some quantifiable, some not. This is why very low calorie diets/low calorie diets require some manner of medical monitoring.
  • Here's an interesting article - focusing on section 9.0: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2699625/ I wouldn't imagine any real harmful effects from a cup/daily, but would limit it at that. I've allowed it on special occasions, largely to make it out as a special treat linked to a special circumstance or event.
  • Hear! Hear! I distill it down to core values - honor, courage, commitment. I focus on what matters - the 20% of the causes which lead to 80% of the effects. In weight management that's calories. In exercise that's discipline. As a personal BS check - I stress that there are 168 hours in the week so if I find myself…
  • I work in industry, but part of this is acting as a liaison between the academic and industrial space to help programs align to industry needs and to prepare students on what to expect during this transition. I'm working primarily with life and physical sciences, but with my background contract out or review data for…
  • I agree with the concept in very specific circumstances, but I don't believe it is correctly framed or particularly beneficial. I disagree that myopically focusing on race and eliminating other key elements leads to less bigotry. To the contrary it promotes it. The study - "The Perils of Privilege" make this case quite…
  • I think we all (at least I hope) agree that we are better off in a world where bigotry is diminished. Most people can't look past what's directly in front of them and rarely think of the unintended consequences, so my optimism is at odds with my realism. Lawsuits, direct enforcement actions, whatever the course may be -…
