  • I'll cite my n=1 experience over the past few weeks. I have been leading multiple pharmocovigilance audits at my firm - all of which hit at once. This resulted in me having to clear my schedule, all my workout times, work longer hours, and eat convenience foods. I haven't been keeping track of my caloric intake, but I do…
  • Longevity "causes" cancer.
  • My original bit of fitness tech was a stopwatch and used as a metric to improve performance. I invested into a Polar HRM in 1995 and used that for years to gather more data. I later invested in a Polar H7, which does the same, but pairs with your smartphone. I wear a Fitbit Flex 2 to track daily activity. This is simply to…
  • Well...true, but the margin of difference is statistically meaningless. Metabolic rate is an output of mass. This is little more than a culmination of the metabolic energy needs of a cell, and then multiplied based upon the number of cells in an individual.
  • Nailed it. There are endless numbers of people looking to increase their power by taking responsibility and ownership over you. You must first realize the prison of your own mind before you can escape it. No one can help you, but you.
  • Love it! I'm 48 and my wife would probably grant me a solid 13. I see much of this as focusing on the wrong things. There is no diet that is going to fundamentally change society. Supplying that which has not been earned is an insult. Man requires purpose to thrive. If you drill down to every negative act it comes down to…
  • Foundationally it is incredibly simple - CICO, be better today than you were yesterday, etc. This is in the physical realm. This would be like someone saying I want to be smarter and struggling with what to do with their mental development. Go to college? Read a book? What subject? What discipline? The problem exists…
  • Truly inspiring! Bravo Zulu!
  • I look at things holistically and would stress that one cannot be fulfilled without addressing their physical, mental, and spiritual aspects in life or the other aspects will suffer. I wouldn't imagine much in the realm of proof of causation, but I cannot make a logical case to neglect an aspect of one's life.
  • They don't. This is an attempt to speak power to truth. Facta non verba. Reality always wins.
  • Did you read all of the stickied posts? https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10300331/most-helpful-posts-getting-started-must-reads#latest It takes 4-6 weeks to really identify progress. Don't get discouraged and realize you are making changes for the rest of your life, not just over a matter of days or weeks.…
  • It isn't so much a matter of benefit, but of possibility. These recommendations are set to establish meaningful expectations. It isn't possible for the average person to lose 2 lbs of fat if they are at a low body fat %. This is also established so that you preserve muscle mass and limit your weight loss to fat. It isn't…
  • Precisely my point. A purposeful omission? The design of experience disregards the elements leading to mortality. The establishment of the control group is also remarkably vague and disregards logistics - available vs. non-available food. Reminiscent of the "links" between high voltage towers and various health issues that…
  • I'm very suspect of such studies utilizing popular nebulous terms. I'm sure there are multiple correlative factors, but no meaningful causative factor. Terribly unhelpful as this furthers the body of misinformation distracting the public to the fact that weight gain is solely due to caloric surplus.
  • Any change in your hormones is going to result in water weight - this is a normal and necessary reaction to keep your cells healthy and stable. Don't think in short term and focus on the long term. Remember your focus is on reducing body fat. With weight management calories are the driving force. I have a fitness tracker…
  • Good for those who make them, Bad for your finances. Objectively irrelevant for their stated purpose.
  • Great minds!
  • As others have stated the only weight gain associated with this medication is water weight. Your metabolism is quite fixed and based largely upon mass. Log your food. Modestly increase your activity and/or decrease your intake - check your weight periodically and see if this changes after 6 weeks.
  • If you're syncing an activity tracker the activity setting on MFP is nothing more than a guideline as long as you have negative calories enabled. The reason this is showing up so high is the difference between your stated activity and your actual activity. Not that this matters - the end result is the same.
  • Apply the same principles to the rest of your life that you learned in your studies. All in this world is but an output of behavior. You don't really hate yourself. I suspect you realize your potential and upset at not fulfilling this, but hate? Too strong a word. We don't invest in things we hate, we invest our valuable…
  • Dangerous? Likely no, but there is no objective evidence available to decide either way as no one will authorize testing on this population as they cannot enter into a legal agreement. I'll default to my standard statement - if it is regulated as a "supplement", this means that there is no objective evidence to support…
  • That is an excellent infographic and I love the "adherence" addition to the classic pyramid. Motivation will fail at some point, so you need to develop behaviors, habits, and discipline to follow through to complete a goal. Jeff Cavaliere has an excellent presentation on this, explaining the critical nature of…
  • You married well.
  • Don't base an entire group based upon one crappy GP with poor bedside manner. There is not a single individual who could not do better seeking some counseling. This is one stigma which needs a quick and deliberate death. I agree with your assessment and that this is a clear matter of priorities. Address your mindset and…
  • Never too late to be better than you are today. My grandfather lived well into his 90s largely due to staying active.
  • Welcome back! I've been on here over 4 years - failed often and learned from each one, just all part of the process. FAIL - First Attempt In Learning
  • Curious on how many financial advisors and debt specialists recommend throwing out checkbook balance sheets to clients with debt issues. Beginning to understand why we have an obesity problem with "professionals" doling out such advice.
  • This is where I'll step in and point out the degree of error in instrumentation vastly exceeds 4%.
  • The assumption in this scenario is that struggle correlates with failure. Reviewing human behavior and history I would argue the opposite. Struggle corresponds with success, but like everything there is a golden mean. The vast majority of the successful (regardless of the subject) are so as an output of resistance. So…
  • 2nd that - Go seek a medical professional. This is not something that can be diagnosed online.
