  • Wine. I used to go wine tasting and buy it all the time. Now I allow myself one glass a week. Not worth drinking all those calories!
  • My husband is Chinese, so we go out to eat it once a week. I go for steamed dumplings, buns and fish and clear soups. It does count as my cheat meal for the week though.
  • I have a garmin 305, or should I say had. It died about a month ago. I loved it while it was working. However it lasted less than 2 years before dying, which is so disappointing after others have had their units last for 4 or more years. I will say one drawback is that on longer runs, it was so heavy that my arm would…
  • I used to always listen to music while running, but after I got an ipod touch as a present, I didn't have an armband for it, so I just stopped running with music. Now I really enjoy listening to my footsteps and breath as I run. This can be a good indicator of effort, along with heart rate. You can pay attention to breath,…
  • Height: 5'6.5" CW: 67.13 kg (148lbs) Example burn: running for 60 minutes at about 9.65kph (6.0 mph) burns 550 cals Edited to add that my example burn run includes some hills that really get my heart rate up. My average heart rate for that run is in the high 140s to low 150s.
  • I like Lululemon for workout clothes when I can afford it. They are pretty expensive, but their stuff is always flattering and high quailty and it performs. My favorite triathlon top is from them. I have some of their clothes that have lasted 5+ years already and are still in great shape.
  • I hear you! I have also been brought up to not waste food and eat everything on my plate. MFP really made me look at portion sizes. Now I weigh just about everything I eat. Since doing this, I have gotten better at buying correct amounts of food and finding not only do I have little to no waste now, but I am saving money…
  • When I did team in training (for a triathlon) the coaches told us that if we missed training due to sickness, just to continue and not make up the days/distance missed. So maybe that would apply here. If it was me, I would ignore the week missed and continue on with the training for the weekday runs. For the long run, I…
  • The album Everything Everything (Live) from Underworld is awesome, but I particularly love the last two tracks - Born Slippy and Rez/Cowgirl.
  • I love Trader Joe's and do the bulk of my grocery shopping there. I haven't really been dissappointed by anything, but I don't really buy any preprared stuff, usually just the staples like cheese, milk, produce, nuts. Here are a few favorites: Any of their chicken sausages are good White Cheddar Puffs Tuna and Green or…
  • For something a little different, you can try this one. http://weelicious.com/2009/06/08/red-beet-white-bean-hummus/
  • I have done a few tris, both sprint and olympic distances. Where is the swim going to take place? Swimming in the pool is much different from swimming in a lake or the ocean. For me, my heart rate will sky rocket during the swim, and I think part of it is due to being nervous in open water. So definitely get out to open…
  • I am trying to get in 1g/lb lean body mass of protein a day, that puts me over 100g per day. I almost never reach that just by eating "real" food, so I supplement with a protein shake. I use 1 scoop of isopure (0 carbs, 5mg cholesterol in 2 scoops) and that gives me a 25g protein boost.
  • Great! Hope you like it. The only reason I have the more expensive one is that I got it as a wedding gift., otherwise I would have gotten the one from amazon too.

  • I have this one and I love it! I use it everday, multiple times a day. http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/oxo-digital-food-scale/?pkey=e%7Cfood%2Bscale%7C1%7Cbest%7C0%7C1%7C24%7C%7C1&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_- This one also gets rave reviews and is cheaper.…

  • I was thinking about getting a pair of Newton's as my next running shoe. For me, my favorite is Brooks Adrenaline. This is the shoe I always come back to after trying new balance, sauconny, nike, mizuno... Everyone is different however. A lot of the people in the group I run with wear Mizuno. When I tried a pair, they were…
  • This topic is extremely intersesting. I belong to a running group and we train for 4-5 races per year, ranging from 5ks to half marathons. My last event was a 10 miler over memorial day weekend. Since then I have kind of been taking it easy on the running and this week started p90x. I have been losing weight faster than I…
  • I did WW online two separate times for 3 months each without much success. I think the points concept was too abstract. I love MFP becasue you see hard numbers. I have had amazing success on MFP so far and would take it over WW any day.
  • Are you using a heart rate monitor to count calories burned, or the MFP database? I have found that for me, the MFP database always overestimates calories burned, and by a good amount too. So if you are purely using the database and eating back all those calories and gaining weight, the database may be overestimating…
  • Congrats! My resting heart rate measured 47 bpm at my last doctor's visit. That made me nervous, but the nurse just asked if I worked out a lot. I said yes, I run. After that, the doctor never made mention of it except that I was very healthy. Phew!
  • I've done weight watchers online two separate time for three monts each time. The first time was the original setup and I lost like 5-10 lbs, but I was always starving. The second time was with the new points plus program and I didn't lose anything! I much prefer MFP! I think points were too abstract for me and you…
  • I am in SoCal, so I will look that one up! I think my next one is the Santa Clarita half in Nov. I heard many people PR on that one too becuase it is mostly flat to downhill.
  • @arc918: The time improvement from your OC half to Fontana half is awesome! Nice work! I wish I could tun that fast. For now I will have to be happy with running under 10 minute miles. =)
  • This isn't really a trick, but I have a small vegetable garden and some fruit trees. My 3 year old isn't very cooperative when it comes to eating her veggies at dinner. However, I was amazed to discover that if we go out to the garden to pick fruits and veggies together, they all go straight from the garden into her mouth!…
  • I find a lot on athlinks.com. Look under the "events and results" tab. They have most, but some of the smaller races I find through google.
  • My very first half marathon was The Great Race of Agoura - Pacific Half Marathon course in 2009. That is a pretty hilly course, but at least it was on the road. Since then I have done: The Great Race of Agoura - Cheseboro Trail half marathon course (California) First Midwest Bank Southwest Half Marathon (Illinois) Rock N'…
  • I have similar issues with the MFP database. I have been biking a few times wearing my heart rate monitor. My HRM will say 334 calories burned in about 110 minutes of biking 14-16 mph. If I use the MFP database it says 860 calories burned! I also run a lot and find that the MFP database always overestimates calories…
  • I like working out to electronic music. The album Everything Everything (Live) from Underworld is awesome, but I particularly love the last two tracks - Born Slippy and Rez/Cowgirl.
  • I love kale chips! Even my husband and 3 year old will eat them.
  • Congrats on your first half! It takes one day of recovery for every mile you run during a race. After a half, I really don't do anything the following week besides some walking, or you could probably do some swimming. Then the second week I slowly start getting back into it, but the longest I run is about 4 miles. Then…
