I ran a 4:47 mile in high school. Been running ever since. I ran a 5:49 mile in a masters track meet last summer; 31 years after high school. My average mile time for longer races; 5Ks, 10Ks has been between 8:00 and 8:30.

For some people, seeing themselves at their starting weight without clothes is an important step mentally to changing their lifestyle. Remember they have been "hiding" under their clothes for a long time. If seeing themselves bare is the best motivator then. Let them be proud!

Whenever I struggle in life I think of three simple words that always keep me going, "Quitting is easy."

How about a princess throwing a 100 pound dumbbell over the edge of a cliff when you reach the 100 pounds lost mark?

Every food item gives members a chance to confirm or deny the nutritional values stated so you can check the accuracy. The calories reported for running 8 minute - 9 minute miles and for cycling 14-16 mph and 18-20 mph are within 10% of the calories reported on my Garmin HRM. 100% accuracy is not necessary for me since I…

There are plenty of websites that applaud the benefits of chocolate milk as a recovery drink. Most say "it has double the carbohydrate and protein content, perfect for replenishing tired muscles. Its high water content replaces fluids lost as sweat, preventing dehydration. Plus it packs a nutritional bonus of calcium, and…

The average person burns 1800 - 2000 calories a day from normal living. To lose weight we have to reduce the intake and increase the output to create a deficit. If we create too large of a deficit the body senses a scarcity of food and slows down to protect itself. Eating 1200 calories is 60% of what is needed for normal…

I looked at your diet for the last week. It looks like your shortfall comes during breakfast. Try whole wheat toast, english muffins, bagel thins (Thomas") with peanut butter and bananas. You can add 300 - 400 calories depending on what bread you eat.

I hate doing sit ups and crunches. What are the best core exercises?

My son loved his trailer bike. I think he will grow up to ride a tandem.

I hear that complaint from many of my runner friends. Let me tell you that you can burn as many calories in the same amount of time, Try this workout. Find an industrial park in your town. They are usually built on fairly flat ground. Find a gear that you can spin about 100 rpm. No sprint as hard as you can for one minute.…

That's awesome!! Some day he's going to pass you.

I save my pasta for the night before a long run or ride. I can burn 800 calories on a one hour run or 1000 calories in one hour of cycling. That's a lot of pasta and I'm certain that my glycogen levels are topped off before the long outing.

According to the formula presented by the Center for Disease Control, your BMI would be 19.4% if you dropped to 135 pounds. That would be near the bottom of the healthy range so be careful. I suggest great patience in losing weight. I would also suggest that you offer to make healthy side dishes for your friends that are…

To sweat or not to sweat. That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the aches and pains of outrageous fitness, or to take arms against a sea of french fries…. Seriously, sweating means hard work and that is sexy. However, if you are disgusted by your own sweaty shirt, try a good dry-fit shirt, They…
