  • @wabmester and @antophora. I agree that was not his finest moment in writing. Although I'm generally a fan of Fung, I really don't like blanket statements and oversimplification dressing as general conclusions. We are humans after all and we all do mistakes here and there.
  • I'm a greedy *kitten* (b.a.s.t.a.r.d)! Acknowledging that I'm a foodie...I know I will have to keep an eye on things. I maintained for almost a year...then changed a couple of things + eating ad libitum. Regain creep. I think I need to have some basic rules going on, while keeping enough flexibility as to not develop OCD.…
  • But fat free mass is everything in the body except fat, including skin, blood and bones. It's a misconception LBM is only muscle fiber. Anyway. According to Wikipedia (yeah I know) the most surprising things contributes to higher BMR, including bigger bodies cause more skin demands heat control. They probably lost some…
  • I don't understand. Their RQ went UP after 6 years...yet their FFM went down from start date. And their RMR was even lower since the end of the program. :/ Will you please tell me what the numbers mean, lol ?
  • Let's put another perspective on it. How much did they regain in 6 years? Was it only slightly over 6 kg/year ? That doesn't sound like permanently reduced RMR. It sounds like unsustainable diet program in the first place and loss of muscle fiber. Did they continue the same extreme program after or did they start relapsing…
  • You've come a long way Stephie ! :)
  • Calling @wabmester! You always seem to find the best sources and explain things succinctly. Can you help me? From what I know there's no clinical definition of what keto adaptation actually is. It seems more like a bunch of symptoms. I could be wrong, so please correct me: Enzymes are protein molecules that are like…
  • Haha, maybe I was unclear, lol. I think there's no coincidence that sarcopenia and gaining weight for the majority of people accelerate around age 40. Why is this? There are many theories. But few concluding answers. Anyway....from here on out...the body and mind are slowly decaying. Maillard effect. I want to see if I can…
  • Potassium is also diuretic. Congrats on the whoosh!
  • 45 yo, but Ty anyway :) If we assume 80 yo is more or less the age when many people end up in care homes. I'm just over to sunset side. I wanna live my life to the fullest as long as possible! Bright and clear, not doped down.
  • Appetite supression is a big deal. 365 days x amount of years. It's why "diets" don't work for longterm adherence. From what I read, about 30% of gen pop do not respond very much to lowcarb diets, due to many factors. I do however believe that the act of overeating is in itself detrimental to health. Especially if it…
  • Yeah, her brain is like synapses connecting on ADHD. Sometimes it can be hard to follow as a layman, but she always provides great nuggets to look into further. Here is the Mark Mattson on the IMHC. This is mostly mice, but the findings are very intriguing! They compared only exercise, only food restriction, both exercise…
  • It was me who posted about Attia quitting keto above. He didn't say exactly why. But from the Stem talk it sounded like the Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) made him realize that he didn't have to keto anymore. He also said he shifted his focus towards "longevity" rather than athletic output. Reducing levels of IGF-1 seems…
  • Two words: Autophagy and BDNF Mice BDNF http://roguehealthandfitness.com/fasting-exercise-increase-levels-brain-derived-neurotrophic-factor/ The Abstract from Pub med http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16011467 Mark's Daily Apple devoted a whole series to IF:…
  • @PaleoInScotland. It sounds like you're a good example that we're indeed very individual and that doing anything with a medical diagnose is best to do with medical advisors on board. Just curious. Is the higher BG during fasting a result of the body mobilizing energy from stored fat? The body will convert as per need basis.
  • More good fats. Adjust a bit. Assess effect 2-3 weeks. Rinse repeat. Motivation is overrated. It's a fleeting feeling similar to being in love. Discipline is underrated. We brush our teeth and pay the mortgage not because we really desire to do so. We do it because it's something that helps us achieve the long games. Use…
  • @PaleoInScotland and @RalfLott. Even being able to reduce insulin alone is huge! The Taylor research flies directly in the face of current medical practice that T2D is a CHRONIC and PROGRESSIVE disease. Will everyone be able to follow such a strict protocol? Probably not. But for me personally, I rather try some…
  • A N=1 vid on the process of keto adaptation https://youtu.be/Ryww8t098qw. There's plenty of stories and advice about how to adapt with minimal discomfort in r/ketogains. I'd say the two most important things are: 1) Manage your expectations. It might take roughly 3 weeks, depending on your biochem and protocols to adapt.…
  • @neohdiver. I understand that you have far more rigorous criteria on a lot of things than me. I'm a novice at learning about the body and metabolism. It seems to me you expect the gold standard of peer reviewed double blind randomized studies to even consider a notion. That's OK. I'm certain you have good reasons for it.…
  • I don't agree with everything Fung says. But I find it hard to see anyone can make an advice of "not eating" proprietary. @neohdiver. I totally get that it must be infuriating that someone is treating for a diagnose that you have, but you can't get the "recipe". But for the accusation of Fung acting greedy, I see it…
  • I never figured out the cause of carb comas after dinner. Sometimes I also get very cold after overdosing on carbs. Anyone knows how or why this happens? Another type of carb tiredness for me is when I wanna keep sleeping after waking up. I now wake up with no alarm and jump out of bed. If I feel dog tired. ...I know it's…
  • After I read a mouse study about mitochondrial biogenesis last winter, I've consciously tried to train like @wabmester said above. Longer sessions and sometimes hard sprinting. More mitochondria = bigger burns without more muscle fiber! ...I deffo don't have to be so careful with calories anymore... Personally, I think HR…
  • Going low carb and physical activity almost every day helps me a lot. I can't have grains or very much sweet stuff, they put me in the black hole with no corners. I also eat lots of vegs and kimchi for the microbiome. No diet is for everyone, I sincerely hope you'll find something that works for you. Best wishes.
  • When looking at what autophagy and phagocytosis are, the body recycling molecules to reassemble new tissue (Ty @Kirkor), it would seem to me that although there are a great deal of overlap between IF and keto-adaptation, IF has additional tricks up the sleeve. Namely the body healing itself by regular housecleaning of…
  • I would like to clarify that I'm genuinely happy for the success you guys have with being carnivore. I believe we are all adults and as such we can show grace towards other people's lifestyle choices. It's really none of my business how someone else on the internet eats. I do however think it's important to have open…
  • I'm curious to how joining a thread stating didn't really read the information and concluding it wasn't valid constitutes as staying out of discussions. Seems like the opposite to me. This is not a personal attack in any form. I just get ticked off by poor rhetoric.
  • Agree with taking it slowly first few weeks. We were all noobs at some point, so don't feel bad :)
  • @FIT_Goat. It might be you're right concerning Stefansson. I was taking from memory watching Stephen Phinney's lectures and reading his book. But, I think that you slalom your rhetoric to what you find suitable ad hoc. I have noticed on several occasions that when you don't agree with something, you often shoot it down…
  • I can eat unlimited amounts of vegs to satiety. No problems. I can eat a limited amount of rice. No problem. But I shouldn't have rice every day. And I absolutely need to stay away from grains as a habitual thing. Especially pasta. Depressing. Gets me depressed. Too much sweet sugary stuff makes me overly emotional.…
  • Re eskimo argument. People tend to forget the indigenous people also eat a lot of organ meats, which have all the nutrition the body needs. As demonstrated per Stefansson during his voluntary "metabolic chamber". It's unscientific to take the results of one protocol and extrapolate that to another protocol. Interestingly,…
