WiFi > BT Nokia announced today that they are shutting down Withings That leaves Garmin, Fitbit, and Under Armour. UA is the most expensive. Garmin is 2nd. Fitbit Aria is least. Are you locked into the Garmin ecosystem? Buy a Garmin. Are you locked into Fitbit? Buy an Aria Are you system agnostic? Buy an Aria All the other…

That really doesn't have much to do with it. $ are in fancy materials to make light stiff shoe soles. You want stiffness because it transfers power from your foot to the pedals more efficiently. Cheap shoes use plastic. Expensive shoes use carbon fibre and exotic blends. There are spin specific shoes. I'm not a fan. Road…

There's a joke with a bit of truth to it: How do you know someone is into crossfit(or marathons or triathlons)? Don't worry, they'll tell let you know!

All the big companies make running snowshoes

Don't need lights at lunchtime ;) So today I went for a run at lunch. A planned workout. Went downstairs, changed, stowed my stuff in a locker, and proceeded to run next to the Atlantic in the snow and about -1C, sideways snow always directly into my eyes... Hat, gloves, long sleeve tech shirt, tights. Perfect, but my…

Mines about 1 minute slow for a 5k, pretty close for a 10k and unknown over that ;) FR230
-
But unless you are sprinting, not that important. Running a 4 minute mile doesn't need strong legs. Needs a very strong heart though ;) Running a 21 second 200 does require a lot of leg muscle!

Strava says I do about .90 KCal per lb per mile hiking. Garmin says a whole lot less. 1500 KCal for Mt Moosilauke or 2200 KCal for Lafayette Ridge in the White Mountains seem about right

$4000 + shipping. Workouts aren't for running so far. A 60 minute workout is 20 minutes running and 40 minutes stretching and weights
-
I'll get in a 30-40 minute run at lunch. I do have showers in the building and I have no hair to take care of ;)
-
I used to ride my hardtail to the train station. Wash it and keep the chain lubed and clean! Grit is bad for lots of stuff, but the drivetrain is the most in danger
-
I believe the Tri also does all the HRM-RUN metrics too.

Only if it's an aero helmet! Preferably full tail

I spit constantly. Starting about a mile in, I have to spit once a minute forever. I've seen a bunch of specialists over the past couple years after living with it for decades. For me, it's not asthma, not exercise induced asthma (which isn't asthma at all), isn't allergies, isn't anything pulmonary, isn't diet related,…

It's not age. I've got friends in their 50s and 60s who run sub-20 5ks. Go slow. Roll the crap out of your calves. Possibly a sports-specific massage. It could be a lack of range of motion in your ankle, which is often caused just by tight calves

All of the, including the cheapest 25 ;)

Bricks are pretty important. It can be pretty tough running off the bike. Otherwise run more, bike more, swim more. If your not an ex-HS/college swimmer, find a masters club and get your form down - form = speed in the water, you can have a huge VO2Max, but if you don't have good swim form, your still slow. IMHO for a race…

Outside is free. And $1200 will buy many months of a gym
-
Running: plugged in charging on my night stand. Rare occassions I'm at the gym: in a locker with my street clothes. Biking: in a zip lock bag in my jersey pocket

Unless you have a recumbent bike, a recumbent indoor bike does almost nothing that carries over outside
-
Or, even the cheapest good devices (Forerunner 25, TomTom Spark/Runner) have built in run/walk intervals. You've got to go up to the FR23x to get custom workouts
-
I wouldn't say perfect. Apps are often 10-15% off in distance which ruins pace calculations
-
Depends on what you want. The garmin forerunners are great. Polar makes pretty good watches. Suunto makes very good watches.
-
HR has nothing to do with calorie burn running
-
Running is my second favorite thing after hiking. But by being a runner, I can easily pump out 20-30 mile days in the mountains ;) . it's really effective cross training!
-
Or Telemark ;) . Climb up the mountain then ski down it!

+1 Also check craigslist. I've seen older ones with old computers go for $3-500! And they service all the old ones AND you can add the newest, fanciest computer to any of them OK, the Concept2 computer is the opposite of fancy ;)

Where are you guys running to find "soft" trails? Over the past 25 years I've run all over the US and never found a trail that is measurably softer than asphalt...
-
You might be surprised, but avalanches happen all the time in the White Mountains. A couple trails are closed almost all winter due to avalanche risk. But they are very localized.

I've climbed Wachussets a couple times with snowshoes
